My computer takes about 8 minutes to load up upon startup. I've ran my anti-virus programs and nothing comes up. Also, while online it comes up with a lot of broken links. So, I don't know what to do about it. Is there a real good free troubleshooting program that might be able to see what's wrong? Does anyone have any good ideas as to what is going on?

My Dell Dimension 2400 computer has slowed greatly in the startup (especially) and loading processes. I would appreciate guidance on what to check as most likely cause.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an ASUS A8JP Notebook PC (WinXp MCE, 1Gig RAM, 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo) and I guess it ran well the first day, but as soon as I installed all the needed software (and cleared out some factory installed bloatware), I noticed that the time for my Desktop to load after logon takes up to 2 minutes.Here's what I've done to try fix this
1. Defragmented HD
2. Turned off unwanted startup items and about 1/3 of the services at startup.
3. Tweaked and cleaned up the registry.
4. Flashed my BIOS to the latest Revision.
I just cleaned out a slightly infection of spyware and viruses on this computer and everything looks nice a clean but unfortunately there seems to be some residual problems.My startup is much slower, the 'loading your personal settings' can take upwards of 2 minutes. But, it can by by-passed by hitting ctrl-alt-del. Once I get to the desktop I notice that Norton Anti-Virus is disabled and it stays disabled until the icons load which ALSO takes another 2-3 minutes. I can open programs and they run fine but I am unable select anything on the desktop or right click on it.
I've never had slowdown like this on here before. It also only seems to be happening on this one windows account, the other ones load up much faster. I've cleaned it the best I can running all the normal apps and some other cleaners. Even tried restoring the desktop back to the windows xp default appearance.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition. When booting up, Windows goes directely
to loading files and takes at least 20 minutes before the sign in screen
appears. Do you have a answer to solve this problem?
When I start my computer it usually takes a minute or two to load everything, but then when I try to click on any icon nothing happens. If I run the mouse over the toolbar at the bottom of the screen I see the hourglass instead of the arrow which I am used to seeing. I have to shut it down cold since nothing will work and I usually do this 2-3 times and then it finally loads completely. I can use the cont/alt/del feature and nothing is showing any action except for "system idle process" which is at 98%. I have tried running all the usual virus scans/adaware/spybot. Everything looks fine. The computer runs just fine after it finally loads. And I have waiting a half hour or so before trying to click on anything and some days it is still not fully loaded yet. It seems like it is just getting hung up somewhere just when its almost finished loading.

It seems to be secure pages mostly (every time I want to order something online, or when I go to a company's application center and try to apply for a job.I am on my second printer (HP 3740). Granted, it's not top of the line, but I just bought it because my old one was broken (I thought) and now it is starting to have the same problems as the last one, and the problems started about a week after I bought it. It started with the printing getting faded, like the cartridge was running out of ink, then it went through the motions of printing but no ink was on the paper. Next it will stop moving, even though the power light comes on.

I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. The start-up time had also lowered considerably and it was working perfectly for once.One thing that's been happening for a while, my computer started taking longer to start-up. I figured it was just all the programs etc I have installed. Then, I have this one external drive that I got connected internally. There were times where it wouldn't recognize this drive; it wouldn't show up on My Computer. My computer is pretty fast, but just recently the startup has been sooo slow. i switched my log in screen to the classic with the autmatic login about two months ago and everything was fine tell about a week or two ago. When i start up my computer it will get to where its time to load the desktop and the log in dialog box will show up and it will finish and then this is where it should load all my startup programs and desktop icons, but it just loads my desktop background picture and then wait about 45 seconds to a minute and it will make the windows startup music and then wait about another minute and then it will start to load all my desktop icons and startup programs. I have tried al most everything. I have ran AVG antivirus about 10 times with updated defiinitions, ran ad-aware, ran spybot search and destory, registry mechanic, ccleaner. I have listen to other suggestions. I have gone into msconfig and removed all startup items, and even tried to remove uncessesary start up services from there as well. NOTHING works.

I mean like 8 minutes or more, could it have to do with the programs that are started when the computer strarts if so how can I find the folder. I am using windows XP home edition I have a 40GB hard drive I only have used 6 gigs of it. I have 256MB of RAM. This problem is new it never took this long.

Also when it starts up, or if there is any load, sounds crackles. Since I started working on it I have run, Adaware, Defrag, Registry cleaner, Driver updater, and virus check, and everything has been cleaned, but it has not helped much. The computer has plenty of free resources, hard drive is only half full, and there are no big programs on here that should slow it down. I also went and purged all the programs out of startup that dont need to be running.

Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

It looks like the program is failing to respond but doesn't say so. Once loaded browsing is normal, althought every time a separate IE window is opened the initial slow response applies followed by normal browsing.
