I recently did some standard maintenance on my computer (empty recycle bin & temp int files, check disk, defrag, etc.Before I did these chores my computer would take about 2 minutes to completely boot. Now it takes over 10 minutes and I cannnot figure out why. I did a system restore to no avail, but it will only allow me to go back one month which is right around the time I did the maintenance.

Win XP HE SP2. Dell 8300 3.0 Ghz .PC takes minutes from startup to desktop. All programs much slower than usual.I regularly use Defrag, Have Microsoft anti spyware, Panda anti virus, Ad Aware Spybot, System Mechanic Pro.etc.Have tried everything!

I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?
View 14 Replies View Relatedso heres the story my laptop took forever to boot up after about a week i got it so i sent it in a month later i received it "fixed" with a new harddrive. i was extremely excited threw in the battery and after about 15 minutes i finally was in. 15 is way longer then the bootup times ive seen on other hp mini 110 laptops on Internet.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having a slow start-up problem, which never used to be a problem. I am running Windows XP SP2. When I startup or restart, the screen goes to black for a few seconds before going to the Log On Page. Once it goes to the log on page, I click my user name. It then takes anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes to load to the state of use. Within one minute from clicking my username, I am brought to Windows Screen, but my background and my icons do not load for another 2 or 3 minutes. During this time period, if I scroll over Start or any other command buttons, my mouse turns into the hour glass. I am receiving no error messages, and once my computer loads completely it seems to be working fine. Though, I think it is running slower than normal in general.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an IBM T41P Thinkpad, actually a company notebook with Windows XP Pro,Recently, after installing SP2 myself, but not right away, I started getting the following problem.When I come from the office to home and boot up my PC it goes through the XP startup and user login fine, then plays the login sound and the blue screen, (blank desktop defined) then it just sits for anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes before the start menu and the rest of the desktop appear, no errors or other clues, the hard drive spins occaisionally but not much.The first entry in the system event log is the event log starting and then the only errors are related to the DHCP and Domain controller not found, but these occur a few seconds apart in the system event log, so this problem is happening before the event log is started, I think.

View 19 Replies View RelatedI have an AMD Athlon XP 64 3700 2.2 GHZ Processor with 3GB of Ram. My computer is pretty fast, but just recently the startup has been sooo slow. i switched my log in screen to the classic with the autmatic login about two months ago and everything was fine tell about a week or two ago. When i start up my computer it will get to where its time to load the desktop and the log in dialog box will show up and it will finish and then this is where it should load all my startup programs and desktop icons, but it just loads my desktop background picture and then wait about 45 seconds to a minute and it will make the windows startup music and then wait about another minute and then it will start to load all my desktop icons and startup programs. I have tried al most everything. I have ran AVG antivirus about 10 times with updated defiinitions, ran ad-aware, ran spybot search and destory, registry mechanic, ccleaner. I have listen to other suggestions. I have gone into msconfig and removed all startup items, and even tried to remove uncessesary start up services from there as well. NOTHING works.

I mean like 8 minutes or more, could it have to do with the programs that are started when the computer strarts if so how can I find the folder. I am using windows XP home edition I have a 40GB hard drive I only have used 6 gigs of it. I have 256MB of RAM. This problem is new it never took this long.

Also when it starts up, or if there is any load, sounds crackles. Since I started working on it I have run, Adaware, Defrag, Registry cleaner, Driver updater, and virus check, and everything has been cleaned, but it has not helped much. The computer has plenty of free resources, hard drive is only half full, and there are no big programs on here that should slow it down. I also went and purged all the programs out of startup that dont need to be running.

Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

The computer doesn't recognize the disk. I've gone into setup and changed it to boot from the DVD-ROM. It still doesn't recognize the CD-ROM. Actually, it has a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM. BIOS only see's one of them but I've changed the plugs to both of them to eliminate the bad one and still nothing. It's set to boot to the DVD.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.
