I want to change a file type association manually, but when I do, I no longer have the "Advanced" button available to change the file type icon. I get a Restore button instead. This seems like a simple problem, but I can't find a solution. I don't want Windows to keep track of file association history. I just want to change them.
View 14 Repliesso, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).
I store *.EML files in various folders around my computer, and I use Outlook Exress File/Save As feature, to do this. Each time I open these files from within these folders, Windows Live Mail takes control. I have been trying to change the File Association, but I cannot find Outlook Express, listed anywhere.

I set some dat files to open with WMP which was fine for my purposes then but later changed them to mpeg files and so don't need to keep that dat file association anymore. I want to get the dat files back to having no particular program assigned to open them. All I can do now is change it to other programs which isn't what I want. Any way to start with a clean slate again? (I guess I could change the dat icon so I can tell what they are if there's not a way to unassociate them.) Dat files have always kind of spooked me, I want to be sure people don't click them thinking they'll play a vcd.

i then bolded "enqueue in winamp" and clicked "set default" then clicked ok.
every file folder i click on, the default action is enqueue in winamp.i was having a problem with my right click context menu and winamp wasnt an option(i uninstalled winamp,reinstalled,went into options,everything to no avail).SO i thought this may do the trick in adding it to my right click options.
How i can change this back to the default norm of clicking on the file folder and entering to see its contents

(and MS) which wasn't helpful, so here goes: once you open the context menu on a generic icon and browse the 'open with' list, you HAVE to make sure to uncheck the 'always open with' checkbox or your next association will be forever linked. you can change it, but only to a specified app. I want to switch the association back to generic. I don't want the file to be associated with anything. problem is, there is no 'restore' option on my newly associated icon (there should be). For example, if I switch the file association AGAIN, I will see restore button. But I can't restore to it's OG generic icon.

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent major cleanup, Windows XP's special folders will not open properly when I double-click them on the desktop. I get a "File does not have a program associated with it ..." error instead. I can still access the folders by rightclick and selecting 'Explore', I just can't double-click from the desktop. it seems that Window's special folders (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, Control panel and the Recycle Bin), are not really files or true folders - they are called 'Special folders'. Also, the problem is self-induced and not the result of a virus or spyware issue - I have done it to myself. Too bad I don't have a recent registry backup or System Restore point I can use.So, my question is how to I fuss with the default associations on the 'Special folders'?

When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?

I have deleted the driver and restarted the computer.I was unable to update the driver, I have the best one now.I am running windows xp sp2.It says the device is working properly, location is 0(0).
I must have accidentally hit some button. Now I cannot type anything into a web page. I can type in on the addresses bar, Yahoo, and Google, but when a web page appears below which has a block for info, nothing happens when I click in the area where my curser is hovering. This happened all at once. I have done two different virus scans and put in a backup drive and even another keyboard. All the same results. The problem must be in some setting. I am not real experienced in computer repair but could this be a BIOS setting or something similar that was corrupted somehow?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been playingwith various flavors of Linux and using the QTPArted cd to resize partitions. Until recently, there have been no problems doing this. but within the last few days, I suddenly have an E: and F: that are of the type RAW and are 0-bytes in size. These two don't show in the Windows Disk Defragmenter or in the QTParted partitioner.
I presently have only Windows and no Linux installations. but they are taking up space as far as the allocation for the drive letters is concerned. Here are the drives that show normally:C: - my Windows partition D: - my CD drive In Windows Explorer, the two above show up..but I also have these E: and F:drives. I've looked through the Registry and don't see anything there

When I choose Save As and click on save the computer hangs up. Internet Explorer is doing the same thing. I cannot type in a URL addresses and it go to the site. None of the addresses I type in show up in the drop down menu. If it is in my favorites I can get it to respond.

I can click on the user then click on the password box.A larger than-normal black rectangle appears as the cursor, but when I type keys they are not 'remembered'.I can hold ctrl-alt-del and get the older style log in.I can use the mouse to select the name and the password boxes but I have the same problem with the cursor and the keyboard characters are still not remembered/indicated.It does not let me delete or overwrite the user name in the name box.At the 'to begin' screen,if I click on an account/user that has no password,the system logs me in and the keyboard works fully.Also,the keyboard works in BIOS setup.I have tried both PS/2 and USB keyboards: they work except for login as described above.Problems like this have been reported before but the only solution seems to be install Windows XP from scratch which I would very much like to avoid.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWindows Installer was not functioning,among other problems, followed Dell troubleshooting guide to reinstall XP using "R" function on Operating System CD so I wouldn't lose files. Apparently worked, was able to log into most-used account. When I went to 2nd account, instead of a fine line in the space one types in password, a blinking black box appeared and keyboard was unable to type in password. Now blinking box appears on all accounts and I can't type in password on any account. Tried using older keyboard plugged into designated keyboard slot, also tried using new keyboard in USB port, neither worked. This is an old Dell Dimension 4600i series with Win XP Home Edition+SP2. Do I need to do a complete re installation of XP, losing some of my most recent files, or does anyone have another solution? Thanks.

I get this on the typing bar, screen: 000000.And I cannot stop it, if I try to press backspace it just keeps coming forward.I know it is not my keyboard, because I have unplugged my keyboard and it still does it, it might be a virus, but again I have kaspersky 2010 and it has not detected any viruses. View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a piece of audio hardware and after installing the software on my computer it now has duplicate files of all my .WAVs and .MP3s So for example, if I've got Section 78 - Dronodome.wav right below that is Section 78 - Dronodome.tqd
So if I open a folder with 50 files, there's 50 of these .tqd files right beside them.
I'm wondering if there's a way to set it in XP so that ALL .tqd files on my computer are 'hidden'.
For now I've just been holding down 'ctrl' and highlighting all the .tqd files in a folder, then right clicking and going to properties and setting them as hidden. Works great but there's no way I want to do this for every folder
