Need File Association / Can't Open Downloaded Things
Dec 26, 2005All my file associations got screwed up royally. I have no idea how, but I need a way to fix it quick. Everything I download I can not open.

My Documents, My Computer Will Not Open - Need File Association Fix
Feb 27, 2008After a recent major cleanup, Windows XP's special folders will not open properly when I double-click them on the desktop. I get a "File does not have a program associated with it ..." error instead. I can still access the folders by rightclick and selecting 'Explore', I just can't double-click from the desktop. it seems that Window's special folders (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, Control panel and the Recycle Bin), are not really files or true folders - they are called 'Special folders'. Also, the problem is self-induced and not the result of a virus or spyware issue - I have done it to myself. Too bad I don't have a recent registry backup or System Restore point I can use.So, my question is how to I fuss with the default associations on the 'Special folders'?

Feb 10, 2005Can I totally remove a file association so that type of file once again has no association set? I set some dat files to open with WMP which was fine for my purposes then but later changed them to mpeg files and so don't need to keep that dat file association anymore. I want to get the dat files back to having no particular program assigned to open them. All I can do now is change it to other programs which isn't what I want. Any way to start with a clean slate again? (I guess I could change the dat icon so I can tell what they are if there's not a way to unassociate them.) Dat files have always kind of spooked me, I want to be sure people don't click them thinking they'll play a vcd.

Apr 11, 2006I downloaded ZoneAlarm and Spybot S&D. Things worked ok until I got a little tired of all the ZA balloons popping up and went in to try to lessen the frequency of them. Afterwards, I got to where I couldn't access things that I had before the attempted change. I used "system restore" back to "pre-installation of ZA and Spybot". Things seem to be normal but I feel that I do need (i am told) of the protection that the two downloads offer. Now when I try to download ZA and Spybot and try to install from my desktop, a window appears saying that the install is corrupt.
How can I get a good install of each of these? If I can get them back, I'll just click the balloons off my screen, no matter how many times they appear. I do have a lot of posts prior to this one ( Re: Spyware Infection[in this section-3 to 4 days ago]). I am VERY computer challanged (as a few Moderators here know by now) so instructions need to be simple.
Setting File Association In Context Menu / File Types
Jun 27, 2005Running xp home sp2. I cannot get it to recognize the program Quick Par for par2 files. When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?

Oct 10, 2006i went to tools---->folder options----->file types----->[NONE]file folder------advanced
i then bolded "enqueue in winamp" and clicked "set default" then clicked ok.
every file folder i click on, the default action is enqueue in winamp.i was having a problem with my right click context menu and winamp wasnt an option(i uninstalled winamp,reinstalled,went into options,everything to no avail).SO i thought this may do the trick in adding it to my right click options.
How i can change this back to the default norm of clicking on the file folder and entering to see its contents
Restoring File Association To Generic
Jun 14, 2007I know the standard file association procedure, and yes I searched this forum first. (and MS) which wasn't helpful, so here goes: once you open the context menu on a generic icon and browse the 'open with' list, you HAVE to make sure to uncheck the 'always open with' checkbox or your next association will be forever linked. you can change it, but only to a specified app. I want to switch the association back to generic. I don't want the file to be associated with anything. problem is, there is no 'restore' option on my newly associated icon (there should be). For example, if I switch the file association AGAIN, I will see restore button. But I can't restore to it's OG generic icon.

These are some messages I get for various reasons. 'It does not look like your system is configured to properly view this file. You can continue but the file you are trying to view may look "wrong". For version PSP 7, you need MSVCRT10.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL loaded in both Windows and Windows/Systems Directories. This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel. Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Proffesional Service Pack 2 CD now.

May 11, 2008I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is �older� stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?
Deleting Downloaded File: Bios Update From Desktop?
Sep 15, 2007I downloaded a bios update from Dell. After using it, I can not delet it from my desktop. I get a message that says, " Close any programs that might be using this program and try again". This has happened to me one other time. The way I got rid of it that time was using "system restore". I would rather not do that this time.

May 26, 2010I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.
