Restoring File Association To Generic
Jun 14, 2007
I know the standard file association procedure, and yes I searched this forum first. (and MS) which wasn't helpful, so here goes: once you open the context menu on a generic icon and browse the 'open with' list, you HAVE to make sure to uncheck the 'always open with' checkbox or your next association will be forever linked. you can change it, but only to a specified app. I want to switch the association back to generic. I don't want the file to be associated with anything. problem is, there is no 'restore' option on my newly associated icon (there should be). For example, if I switch the file association AGAIN, I will see restore button. But I can't restore to it's OG generic icon.

with .exe file associations in win xp.Every time an exe file starts up (including any startup programmes) an error window pops up headed clone dvd registration, and informing me that this program cant open whatever application is trying to open.I have tried restoring the association, but when I change the exe to open with 'application'. it automatically changes back to clone dvd registration.I have tried all the suggestions on this page: http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12 but Im still getting the same results.

Can I totally remove a file association so that type of file once again has no association set? I set some dat files to open with WMP which was fine for my purposes then but later changed them to mpeg files and so don't need to keep that dat file association anymore. I want to get the dat files back to having no particular program assigned to open them. All I can do now is change it to other programs which isn't what I want. Any way to start with a clean slate again? (I guess I could change the dat icon so I can tell what they are if there's not a way to unassociate them.) Dat files have always kind of spooked me, I want to be sure people don't click them thinking they'll play a vcd.

Running xp home sp2. I cannot get it to recognize the program Quick Par for par2 files. When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?

i went to tools---->folder options----->file types----->[NONE]file folder------advanced
i then bolded "enqueue in winamp" and clicked "set default" then clicked ok.
every file folder i click on, the default action is enqueue in winamp.i was having a problem with my right click context menu and winamp wasnt an option(i uninstalled winamp, reinstalled, went into options, everything to no avail).SO i thought this may do the trick in adding it to my right click options.
How i can change this back to the default norm of clicking on the file folder and entering to see its contents

I have to change a file association via changing a registry key directly. I know how to do programmatically. What I need to know is what registry keys need to be changed. Specifiically I need to associate the file extension jsp with Internet explorer.

After a recent major cleanup, Windows XP's special folders will not open properly when I double-click them on the desktop. I get a "File does not have a program associated with it ..." error instead. I can still access the folders by rightclick and selecting 'Explore', I just can't double-click from the desktop. it seems that Window's special folders (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, Control panel and the Recycle Bin), are not really files or true folders - they are called 'Special folders'. Also, the problem is self-induced and not the result of a virus or spyware issue - I have done it to myself. Too bad I don't have a recent registry backup or System Restore point I can use.So, my question is how to I fuss with the default associations on the 'Special folders'?

I store *.EML files in various folders around my computer, and I use Outlook Exress File/Save As feature, to do this. Each time I open these files from within these folders, Windows Live Mail takes control. I have been trying to change the File Association, but I cannot find Outlook Express, listed anywhere.

After messing around with some 3rd party software, my XP pretty much crashed¦missing task bar, can’t move files (paste option gone), F5 (search) only see that little dog on the bottom, cant install or uninstall programs (error saying something about Windows installer is not working), Safe mode doesn't work, and the list goes on.My only option (with my knowledge) was to re-install XP. Luckily, few days before the crash, I backed up All information in this computer” using Windows system tools.

I want to change a file type association manually, but when I do, I no longer have the "Advanced" button available to change the file type icon. I get a Restore button instead. This seems like a simple problem, but I can't find a solution. I don't want Windows to keep track of file association history. I just want to change them.

I got 2 Trojans on both of my computers, both computers are ASUS (Custom built) running XP Home SP3, IE6 with Bose Speakers... AVG associates the sound driver with the trojans, which I don't understand... The first step would obviously be to delete the sound driver and install a new one, but I don't know of a TRUSTED site.

I was given a Toshiba notebook and only told it doesn't work. It will boot into XP but all of the non system icons have the same generic icon. Non of the icons work (nothing happens when you click on them). Basically can't get into anything. Trying to run system restore from Run brings up the no program associated with this file message. Safe mode is the same and Last Good Config was also the same. I tried running system restore from Safe Mode with command prompt using %systemroot%system32estore strui.exe. which brings up an empty system restore box. Although it looks like it came with a XP CD, all that I have is a restore CD. One other thing that bothers me is that about once a minute what sounds like the system fan goes on for about 10 seconds. I don't mind using the restore CD(it's not my laptop or info that will be erased), but I would like to avoid that if possible.

I have an outboard USB soundcard works fine with the generic drives on XP. However When I 1st tried to install it. I messed up on the install of the real drivers for the USB soundcard. These drivers have to be associated directly with the card on 1st try install because there is no auto loader for USB soundcard. I hit ok, at the wrong time, somewhere in the process. And now XP wont let me search for the drivers whenever I try to reinstall them by using plug and play

Computer wouldn't boot to Windows, throwing error:Code: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll.Please re-install a copy of the above file."Found generic instructions for help on the internet.Used recovery console to bootcfg /rebuild
That helped me boot up back into Windows, but as windows logs on I have an error "C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorDesktop" does not exist,it most certainly does exist) or something similar, obviously lagging the load of explorer.exe and resulting in a blank desktop other than default items.
