Restoring File Associations?

May 23, 2005

I have been playin a lot of online RPG lately, so I been working with maps and photos, drawings, etc.. I got PSP8,and while installing it I switched the file associations ALL on, so every graphics file becames a PSP8 file. Well its causing all sorts of problems, the web wont upload PSP8 format. OOoopss. Fine , right, I just remove the PSP8 assoc on files, such as Jpeg, gif, bmp, but now those files are listed as having no extension now!! So the web wont even recognize them know, ie they dont show up in the 'browse' list. How can I restore the file associations to the originals, on the jpeg, bmp, gifs ?

Apr 23, 2007

I restarted my computer and when I opened firefox, the program wouldnt open. The error said something about file extentsion does not exist, attach an association in the folder options of control panel. This problem applies to almost all programs on my computer. I had to change exe and insert in firefox in order to open it and I post this problem.. I was dumb enough and newbish not to create a system restore before fiddling with the registry. Is there any way to fix the problem?

Open With - File Associations

Jul 26, 2005

For some reason now, whenever I try to RIGHT click on ANY of my file types, and do a OPEN WITH, I come up with the following message, "This file doesn't have a program associated with it, for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel". Except that when I go there, there IS a program associated with the particular file type. Example: .jpg files, I have Microsoft photo editor, Paint Shop Pro 7, and Picassa, installed. I used to be able to RIGHT click on a .jpg file, and then go to "open with" and it would give me a list of installed programs to choose from. NOW I get the above error. Now, I DO use a registry cleaner, could I have damaged something? and how do I get it back?

Unable To Edit File Types/Associations

Aug 16, 2006

I am having a problem with file associations in that the options in Folder Options/File Types are grayed out. These are the New, Delete, Change and Advanced buttons. I noticed that I had a problem with my associations when my computer stopped keeping the changes I made using the Open With/Choose Program method. I installed Foobar2000 media player today and when I tried to associate media files within the configuration preferences I get the error message "An error occurred while changing file type associations. If you are using a limited account, please contact your system administrator.

File Associations Change But Default Icon Remain

Sep 14, 2005

seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything!

Luckily, few days before the crash, I backed up All information in this computer” using Windows system tools.

Restoring File Association To Generic

Jun 14, 2007

I know the standard file association procedure, and yes I searched this forum first. (and MS) which wasn't helpful, so here goes: once you open the context menu on a generic icon and browse the 'open with' list, you HAVE to make sure to uncheck the 'always open with' checkbox or your next association will be forever linked. you can change it, but only to a specified app. I want to switch the association back to generic. I don't want the file to be associated with anything. problem is, there is no 'restore' option on my newly associated icon (there should be). For example, if I switch the file association AGAIN, I will see restore button. But I can't restore to it's OG generic icon.

Folder Associations - PPT Older Version

System- XP/SP2 - Outlook Express - Do not have MS Power Point - Have downloaded MS Power Point Viewer - in MS Office Folder.. Also started same thread under "Computer Help" - when I searched - more threads for this were found under "XP"PROBLEM:
1. E-mail attachment with .ppt file will not open. When go to folder options - already have .ppt extension - and it says that it opens with MS Power Point Viewer - however it will not work. I have downloaded the newest version of viewer which replaced the older version (03?). I have changed the icon - still won't open. ??2. When I attempted to open the attachment - it brought up a dialog box that asked if I wanted to "save" or "open". It also had an option box in the lower left corner that indicated "Always ask" - which I mistakenly unchecked - Now I can't get that back/

Prevent Image And Fax Viewer From Stealing Associations

Aug 12, 2002

Normally, the Windows Image and Fax Viewer will steal associations from other image viewers, such as AcdSee, so that when you double-click a jpeg (for example) it is opened with WIFV.To prevent this irritating behavior, delete the subkey inside HKCRSystemFileAssociationsimageShellExContextMenuHandlers which I believe was named Preview (before I deleted it, that is).

Restoring From The CD

Am I able to restore the Windows XP operating system on my laptop from the CD without trashing my other data/programs? I have used "System Restore" quite often and now notice several small glitches occurring from time to time so am wondering if small portions of the system have become corrupt (sorry for the nontechnical terminology). It would be nice to be able to restore the system directly from my CD but I haven't been able to discover if this is possible.

System Is Not Restoring

Mar 16, 2006

I've been trying to resolve multiple problems that suddenly appeared with my pc by myself for days. I need help, please!

Problems:
1. Flash has stopped operating.

I tried downloading simple Flash and got the error message "No Platform for this application". Shockwave Flash did install, but my flash animation is still not working.

My operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Here is my Hijack This log:

Restoring Crashed Using BKF

Aug 24, 2008

It is ironic that I am here, because I own a tech business, but I have been stumped so long that I need to go ask the big-guns.My problem: My computer was acting up.My solution: Reinstall XP.My second problem: I have a SATA drive which XP doesn't support by default. My solution: Use nLite to package my drivers into my install disc and burn a new copy.My third problem: install goes as planned, but when the computer starts up it gets to the Windows Logo loading-screen and crashes right as the blue bar enters the screen. The computer simply freezes, shuts down, reboots, and says "Windows did not shut down properly" or whatever the hell it says.So now I have no clue what to do. I know it's not the wrong drivers--I got them directly from ASUS's website and made sure it's the 32-bit Windows XP drivers.

I have tried reinstalling Windows like 10 times over the past 3 days, so I know it wasn't just a faulty install. My CD drive is 6 months old and my hard drive 2 months old. They both run perfectly, so I know it's not them.Being the genius I am, I backed up my entire hard-drive on a BKF file with a clean install!
So now I can just use the BKF file to write to my hard drive... if I had a working computer. So here's my situation: I'd accept a helpful fix for the thing above, but I don't think there will be any fixes for it that I haven't already tried. But what I really do want is some advice on how to write my BKF file to my SATA HDD. I have my SATA connected to my computer via an external USB converter-switch-like-thing, so I have access to it. The BKF is stored on my laptop's HDD, but my Laptop is Vista (ewwie). I need to know how to take the BKF file from my Vista laptop and restore it onto my SATA HDD that is attached via USB. Vista's restore capability doesn't support XP's BKF files, so I was wondering if anybody knows of a third-party application or any way to get this back up, and quickly. I'm a developer and my computer has been down for 3 days!

Restoring From A Backup CD

I use the Enhanced Windows Backup program. I have just copied backup files to a CD. The files have my docs on it, along with Local Settings, All Users, Start Menu, etc.Fortunately, I haven't had to restore any info due to computer crashes. I tried to check if the files got copied to the CD and all I can see is the name of the folder, but not the individual files. My concern is how do I know if the files are there and then, what would I have to do to get them transferred to my computer in case of a computer crash?

System Restore Not Restoring

Mar 22, 2007

I decided to use system restore for the first time since I reinstalled xp Pro about 6 months ago. So I picked a point three days old and let the computer reboot only to be informed that System Restore was unable to restore to that date. I picked another one about a week older and tried again. Same message. I checked the event logs but couldn't find anything except a confirmation of the above. I checked to see if the System Restore slider was maxed and it was. However I did discover that I have two Systgem Restore files on my computer, one on the C drive and one on D which I bascially use for storage. I opened the file on D and found nothing unusual, it contained about 25MB of data.

Restoring Too Much - Extract The Information

Jul 1, 2005

I'm in the process of backing up a lot of DVD files, some of which are very large. First I extract the information from one DVD, then burn it onto a new one. After I'm done filling up a new DVD, I then delete all the information from my computer. In all, I'll end up with around 50 DVDs. In case I have to do System Restore sometime, I've been creating a new restore point after completing around five DVDs so my computer, if in that situation, won't have to restore a lot of files I don't need anymore. This is creating a lot of restore points and my question is: am I doing the right thing? Will creating all these restore points cause some sort of problem?
