Just about the start button you usually will see printer, Internet connection, search & help. Help has disappeared from the listing on my PC. I can still access help if I go to the left hand side box in my Computer. How do I restore it to where it belongs?
View 2 RepliesMy PC was recently infected with a virus (Antivirus GT) and although I'm sure I've cleared it by running i0Bit 360 and Malwarebytes anti malware, none of the desktop icons or the task bar appear on start up.I can still access programs through the task manager (File, new task, run)and all my files are still present but obviously, I would like to return my computer to it's former working state. I do not have all the system recovery disks and could not find system restore or safe mode on the computer so I'm hoping there is a way of doing this without the use of CD's.
View 4 Replies View RelatedCurrently I am running off of a Windows XP Home Edition. When I first plugged it in I had just resolution problems and windows opening up off of the available screen space. I even changed resolutions, etc. after fishing out the Display Settings window from the abyss. I tried rebooting and going into safe mode but once I got to the Settings screen, my arrow keys would not let me travel there.I figured since I really don't have anything but the Internet and messengers on this computer that I'd just restore the computer to factory settings. The problem? I don't know how. I am pretty sure I have all of the CDs, but if someone could give me a step-by-step that would be excellent. I could read it off of the laptop as I work on it. Try and make it as clear as possible

Basically, "When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
NOTE: Some systems like Inspiron Mini 9 (910) do not support System Restore as they do not have <F11> nor any substitute."
In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
I right clicked on "My Computer" icon to the "Microsoft's Management Console" window and I have 3 portion's.
The first one is a "Healthy EISA Configuration" that is FAT 31MBs., the 2nd one is "healthy Unknown Partition" that is a FAT32 3.49 GB's. And the 3rd is a healthy System
79.97 GB's. ( I have a 80 GB HD..

when my windows xp starts up it takes ages to load the desktop icons(3-5 mins). I've tried scanning with mcafee and trend micro but nothing was found. This also happened to me a while ago but then i simply restored my computer to an earlier time which worked, but it's happenning to me now again and i again tried restoring my computer to an earlier time but this time it didn't work, it said it couldn't restore the computer to that time

I wanted to start fresh and the recovery system for windows gives me only a limited number of dates. I thought that the Viao recovery would do the job.I was wrong. I haven't checked recent forums about problems with this, so I went ahead and broke my laptop. Before the Recovery system starts, my laptop says, with a black background.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an older somputer I use to Host Games online...seemed fine last few nite .however the last 2 oe 3 times I have started it...it takes forever to start and a screen appears saying sorry for any inconveinince but windows could not start..etc etc..gives options to start in Normal mode safe mode or last known good configuration..wich is what I tried after turning it off and back on again..still nothing..I can get it to start in safe mode....but it wont boot up in normal mode..just hangs at "Windows XP" screen...Its an older Pentium4 Dell Dimension4300.

I have used "System Restore" quite often and now notice several small glitches occurring from time to time so am wondering if small portions of the system have become corrupt (sorry for the nontechnical terminology). Problems:
1. Flash has stopped operating.
2. System Restore gives me an error message, "Cannot Be Restored" -- I've tried multiple restore points.
I tried downloading simple Flash and got the error message "No Platform for this application". Shockwave Flash did install, but my flash animation is still not working.

It is ironic that I am here, because I own a tech business, but I have been stumped so long that I need to go ask the big-guns.My problem: My computer was acting up.My solution: Reinstall XP.My second problem: I have a SATA drive which XP doesn't support by default.My solution: Use nLite to package my drivers into my install disc and burn a new copy.My third problem: install goes as planned, but when the computer starts up it gets to the Windows Logo loading-screen and crashes right as the blue bar enters the screen. The computer simply freezes, shuts down, reboots, and says "Windows did not shut down properly" or whatever the hell it says.So now I have no clue what to do. I know it's not the wrong drivers--I got them directly from ASUS's website and made sure it's the 32-bit Windows XP drivers.
I have tried reinstalling Windows like 10 times over the past 3 days, so I know it wasn't just a faulty install.My CD drive is 6 months old and my hard drive 2 months old. They both run perfectly, so I know it's not them.Being the genius I am, I backed up my entire hard-drive on a BKF file with a clean install!
So now I can just use the BKF file to write to my hard drive... if I had a working computer. So here's my situation: I'd accept a helpful fix for the thing above, but I don't think there will be any fixes for it that I haven't already tried. But what I really do want is some advice on how to write my BKF file to my SATA HDD. I have my SATA connected to my computer via an external USB converter-switch-like-thing, so I have access to it. The BKF is stored on my laptop's HDD, but my Laptop is Vista (ewwie). I need to know how to take the BKF file from my Vista laptop and restore it onto my SATA HDD that is attached via USB. Vista's restore capability doesn't support XP's BKF files, so I was wondering if anybody knows of a third-party application or any way to get this back up, and quickly. I'm a developer and my computer has been down for 3 days!

I have not put anything on but it is a new PC and it loaded and updated antivirus program & spyware programs.What are my chances that it will restore back to a week ago properly before the programs were updated without creating other problems. It seems like an awful lot for it to back out. Then I could change some of the choices I made.

Before I upgraded, I backed up all of my files and settings using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I placed the backup files on my external hard drive. Now when I try to restore from the backed up file, which is a SaveData.MIG file, the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard does not recognize it as being a viable file. Also, the file itself it write protected, but when I try to un-protect it, it reverts back to being protected.

The files have my docs on it, along with Local Settings, All Users, Start Menu, etc.Fortunately, I haven't had to restore any info due to computer crashes. I tried to check if the files got copied to the CD and all I can see is the name of the folder, but not the individual files. My concern is how do I know if the files are there and then, what would I have to do to get them transferred to my computer in case of a computer crash?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been playin a lot of online RPG lately, so I been working with maps and photos, drawings, etc.. I got PSP8,and while installing it I switched the file associations ALL on, so every graphics file becames a PSP8 file. Well its causing all sorts of problems, the web wont upload PSP8 format. OOoopss. Fine , right, I just remove the PSP8 assoc on files, such as Jpeg, gif, bmp, but now those files are listed as having no extension now!! So the web wont even recognize them know, ie they dont show up in the 'browse' list. How can I restore the file associations to the originals, on the jpeg, bmp, gifs ?

I split it into 3 drives C:, D: & E:my C drive consists of XP Pro Operating System my D drive consists of a Operating System BACKUP file (I created it when I successfully installed XP Pro on my system) my E drive consists of some important documents & downloaded software files.Now I want to restore my C drive with XP Pro initial stages (from the Backed up file).If I do that will my documents in D & E drive exist and accessible? So I picked a point three days old and let the computer reboot only to be informed that System Restore was unable to restore to that date. I picked another one about a week older and tried again. Same message. I checked the event logs but couldn't find anything except a confirmation of the above. I checked to see if the System Restore slider was maxed and it was. However I did discover that I have two Systgem Restore files on my computer, one on the C drive and one on D which I bascially use for storage. I opened the file on D and found nothing unusual, it contained about 25MB of data.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of backing up a lot of DVD files, some of which are very large. First I extract the information from one DVD, then burn it onto a new one. After I'm done filling up a new DVD, I then delete all the information from my computer. In all, I'll end up with around 50 DVDs. In case I have to do System Restore sometime, I've been creating a new restore point after completing around five DVDs so my computer, if in that situation, won't have to restore a lot of files I don't need anymore. This is creating a lot of restore points and my question is: am I doing the right thing? Will creating all these restore points cause some sort of problem?

I have had to put them back where i want them, one at a time, on too many occasions. And presumably i will have to do so again, unless there is some setting that i dont know about, or maybe some helpful little program that i haven't met yet. I am hoping theres an easy way to restore the icons to the positions i like them to occupy on my desktop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI needed to reformat my Hard Drive from NTFS to Fat32. But in doing so, I managed to forget to back up my files. By reformatting, I erased everything on my C: drive. Now, since I'm not in Windows and cannot access it, I have no way of doing a System Restore. I don't own any XP Install discs, so that eliminates that option. The only solution I can think of would be to download the necessary files, but I don't know if there is such availability.
