Prevent Image And Fax Viewer From Stealing Associations
Aug 12, 2002
Normally, the Windows Image and Fax Viewer will steal associations from other image viewers, such as AcdSee, so that when you double-click a jpeg (for example) it is opened with WIFV.To prevent this irritating behavior, delete the subkey inside HKCRSystemFileAssociationsimageShellExContextMenuHandlers which I believe was named Preview (before I deleted it, that is).
Edit (delete) this string:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00**This it the actual entry, so if you want to put t back, just save the section above that is between the asterisks to a whatevername.reg file(I used notepad) then right click it and select merge.
To remove the Image and Fax viewer In the run box type or paste regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll Click OK. To Re-enable The Image and Fax Viewer In the run box type or paste regsvr32 shimgvw.dll Click OK.
I use Office 2000. I think the latest big patch windows sent out. This was the one dealing with the Metafile Vulnerablity. Whenever, i click on a microsoft word document I get Windows Fax and Image viewer. The only way i can get it to open in word is to use this route. Right click the file>click on open with<choose Microsoft Word. This is just really annoying and i believe its related to the patch
I just sent a fax & when I tried to view it, fax console opened adobe photoshop instead of fax viewer. I installed adobe a few months ago & this is the 1st fax I have sent since then. APS is not clear & I don't like it for this function. I prefer windows FV. How do I restore the viewer to its original target (FV)?
I restarted my computer and when I opened firefox, the program wouldnt open. The error said something about file extentsion does not exist, attach an association in the folder options of control panel. This problem applies to almost all programs on my computer. I had to change exe and insert in firefox in order to open it and I post this problem.. I was dumb enough and newbish not to create a system restore before fiddling with the registry. Is there any way to fix the problem?
I have been playin a lot of online RPG lately, so I been working with maps and photos, drawings, etc.. I got PSP8,and while installing it I switched the file associations ALL on, so every graphics file becames a PSP8 file. Well its causing all sorts of problems, the web wont upload PSP8 format. OOoopss. Fine , right, I just remove the PSP8 assoc on files, such as Jpeg, gif, bmp, but now those files are listed as having no extension now!! So the web wont even recognize them know, ie they dont show up in the 'browse' list. How can I restore the file associations to the originals, on the jpeg, bmp, gifs ?
For some reason now, whenever I try to RIGHT click on ANY of my file types, and do a OPEN WITH, I come up with the following message, "This file doesn't have a program associated with it, for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel". Except that when I go there, there IS a program associated with the particular file type. Example: .jpg files, I have Microsoft photo editor, Paint Shop Pro 7, and Picassa, installed. I used to be able to RIGHT click on a .jpg file, and then go to "open with" and it would give me a list of installed programs to choose from. NOW I get the above error. Now, I DO use a registry cleaner, could I have damaged something? and how do I get it back?
nothing will open..i know it has to do with the file associations, and all that stuff.. i have looked everywhere about how to fix it, and nothing will work.
I have been searching for an answer to solve a problem with the the process named "System" (not "System Idle"). It may start at 0% but as the day wears on it grows in both size and % of CPU resource use, many times consuming 99% of resources but with no active applications launched and any other processes using resources. The computer bogs down and it freezes during Shutdown.
System- XP/SP2 - Outlook Express - Do not have MS Power Point - Have downloaded MS Power Point Viewer - in MS Office Folder.. Also started same thread under "Computer Help" - when I searched - more threads for this were found under "XP"PROBLEM: 1. E-mail attachment with .ppt file will not open. When go to folder options - already have .ppt extension - and it says that it opens with MS Power Point Viewer - however it will not work. I have downloaded the newest version of viewer which replaced the older version (03?). I have changed the icon - still won't open. ??2. When I attempted to open the attachment - it brought up a dialog box that asked if I wanted to "save" or "open". It also had an option box in the lower left corner that indicated "Always ask" - which I mistakenly unchecked - Now I can't get that back/
with .exe file associations in win xp.Every time an exe file starts up (including any startup programmes) an error window pops up headed clone dvd registration, and informing me that this program cant open whatever application is trying to open.I have tried restoring the association, but when I change the exe to open with 'application'. it automatically changes back to clone dvd registration.I have tried all the suggestions on this page: http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12 but Im still getting the same results.
I am having a problem with file associations in that the options in Folder Options/File Types are grayed out. These are the New, Delete, Change and Advanced buttons. I noticed that I had a problem with my associations when my computer stopped keeping the changes I made using the Open With/Choose Program method. I installed Foobar2000 media player today and when I tried to associate media files within the configuration preferences I get the error message "An error occurred while changing file type associations. If you are using a limited account, please contact your system administrator.
seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything!
after blocking some Adware notified attempts to change regiestry entires,I have "lost" all my file associations for my programs I tried the following after to launch registry editor without success Start Run command.com[I had to browse to command in windows to assoiciate this file, but it worked]copy regedit.exe regedit.com[this worked saying I had copied 1 file successfully]start regedit.com[this would not work - error message sayng no access]
I am trying to create a full HD image of my Dell c800 Laptop using Drive Image 7 (circa 2003) to an USB HD. I have tried twice and received failures about my HD having bad sectors OR locked sectors. I ran check disc with repair and did not find any problems. Re-ran check disc from the boot disc that came with the application and found no problems with the disc. Tried again for a backup and received the same error. I am thinking it is one of the programs I have loaded has a locked sector or one of my processes that loads during boot is the problem?
So two days ago my computer suddenly decides that when I arrive back home it would want to start running like a win 95. Thus, I promted to shut it down. Once it arrived to the loading screen after the reboot nothing occurred. I then decided to wait... 30mins later it goes black and then the message arrives: "Winlogon.exe-Badimage The Application or DLL C:/Windows/System32/sfc.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation disk settings." I have alot of stuff on my computer I need for work, is the only option to deleted everything and re add XP?
Whenever I try to view the Log, I get the top screen with the three optons, but I only get the bottom screen no-matter which of the three I click on, is it corrupt or something? Why can't I get the Event Log to come up?
I've had this networked drive for photos going great for months. When I use the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, I can rotate clockwise/counter-clockwise and auto save on the spot.any ideas why? The properties an ALL jpg's are not read-only, File Sharing is still set to "allow network users to change files" - are there advanced sharing properties I should look into or do you think this is just another annoying MS bug? Very frustrating.
I'm having some intermittent computer problems. Sometimes I get programs that all of a sudden "wont respond" and have to end them and then usually restart to use again, like my MSN explorer and occasionally word or excel. Also I'm occasionally having an issue where my wireless adapter all of a sudden won't recieve any signals. There are several wireless networks in my area and all of a sudden it can't see any of them including my own.
Better way to Delete Picture and Fax Viewer without any other effects.It can be removed as follows: [Start] [Run] type regedit.exe and click [OK]Navigate to delete the Folder ShellImagePreview under Context Menu Handlers. If you want to restore the Picture and Fax Viewer :Create the ShellImagePreview folder and create the String Value (Default)Assign it the value {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

A small program called Window XP Key Viewer shows my OS key differently. I have no idea about the reliability of this program. If anyone of you have some idea about this matter please help me.Does OS changed the key that I used when I installed the OS for security reason? Is there anyway to check the serial number of my OS.
It seems that whenever I view a picture it is saved in this folder, "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Where do I find this folder on my pc so I can delete its contents? And how do I prevent pictures from being saved in this folder?
By default, Windows XP opens all picture files (gif,jpg,...) with the included Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what other picture viewers you have installed. To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done from command prompt:regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll(Additional note: unregistering shimgvw.dll will also disable thumbnail view in Explorer and may cause problems changing user account and desktop background pictures. To reenable Picture and Fax viewer again type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll)
i have done something in " my pictures " and do not know what i have done when i go to my pictures i no longer see a thumbnail of a piccy..just an icon of paint shop pro. i changed the file type to " open with " windows picture and fax viewer but still no joy and now my pictures cannot be opened by any program
I have XP pro/service pack2 I recently reinstalled a new copy to my computer but I can't seem to get any viewer, realplayer quicktime etc to display movie clips like in .wmv or avi and the like. I've got a couple of error messages and warnings found in my Events Viewer that I don't really understand and want to get rid of it...If anyone could help, it'll be greatly appreciated.First is in my Application : Lots and lots of warnings about my MS iInstaller.Reads
I am getting frequent system related errors in my Event Viewer. Typically those are related to system crashes. Here are four for starters. It is almost impossible to avoid some crashes on a daily basis. I find the M$ help over my head. Where to start?
Recently i noticed that windows event viewer shows this error:"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to create an illegal memory OpRegion, starting at address 0x0, with a length of 0x1000. This region lies in the Operating system's protected memory address range (0x0 - 0x9f800). This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance." I start getting this message every 10-15 minutes while playing 3D games like Left 4 dead. My system hangs or restarts from time to time (while idle or is booting). I have tested my pc with prime95, furmark, memtest, other burn-in applications. No crashes, everything looks stable.
