I recently performed a system recovery after getting a rather nasty virus. Everything else seems fine apart from these multiple instances of my administrator folder:
I'd like to delete all these un-necessary folders but when I try it says they are necessary for windows to run properly.
My PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have built an new xp pro machine and upon first boot up, it created (among others) a My Documents folder. Then when I used the Files and Settings Transfer wizard, it moved my old My Documents folder from the old machine to the new one. Problem is, they have different names. I expect if I'd named them identically, there wouldn't be two of them. Each file I try to save defaults to the one from the old machine. My question is, can I safely
delete the other?
I did more than one system restore and each time the process created a new user folder. I first thought all my settings were lost but since discovered I had several new user folders and the computer was no longer using my original folder when I logged in.

In Documents & Settings I see 3 Users: Administrator; All Users; and, Owner.
Can I safely move everything from All Users and Owner to Administrator? Then delete All Users & Owner?
I can't open multiple files and folders, but my little registry hack Copy To, and Move To (info about it here: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-6115665.html) opens up instead. I tried deleting those, but then nothing happens if I try to open multiple files or folders. I don't know when this happened, because I rarely open more than one file/folder simultaneosly.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am having a system with XP Pro x64 with multiple shared folders. Here is the setup. I have about 10 users (1 Admin account, 9 Limited accounts). I have created 10 folders for each User and modified them as shared folders with each user having access to their respective folders ONLY while the Admin account will have access to all folders. I have disabled 'Simple File Sharing', switched off Guest Account. Now I can view this system on other systems on the n/w. But the problem is, if I map a shared folder on one system, I was not able to map anymore on other systems and it gives error, 'the system can not accept multiple connections' in those lines.

What I want to do is transfer all the mp3s contained in these folders to My Music (I have just upgraded to Windows xp media center edition). Rather than going through each folder manually, and going through the time consuming process of selecting, copying and pasting every mp3 in each folder, is there any way I can select all of the mp3s in all of the folders automatically, and have them copied over?

I tried this but it disconnects other user who already using that computer.
We are running windows XP SP2 on a large domain. We have recently had several users login in that are somehow getting new profiles. This seems to be affecting only the XP machines. Roaming profiles are not being used. We have been editing the registry and repointing to their original profiles, deleting the newly created profiles and this returns their original desktop and solves the problem temporarily, but it continues to happen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe display comes up at a reduced screen size and I have to go into Display Properties Settings and change the resolution up (which causes the screen to fill the display) and then set the res back to what it was (1280x1024). There are two monitors showing:
1. (Multiple monitors) on Dell 8200
2. Plug and Play monitor on Dell 8200
Number 2 is listed as inactive
I would like to delete the multiple monitor feature completely since I will never be using anything but the laptop monitor now. Any help would be appreciated.

I was checking my Windows folder, with hidden files shown, and I noticed there are 2 folder, 'ie7' and 'ie7updates'. I'm now using IE 8, and they have their respective folders below this, with 'ie8' and 'ie8updates'. What I want to know is, since I'm not using IE 7 anymore, can i safely delete these 2 folders, which are combined over 100 mb. Can anyone give me advice if I should do this and will it cause any harm to my Operation System.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have about 8 folders on my destop that are empty. I can delete them but when I reboot the pc they are back on the desktop. I have even tried to delete them with bc wipe. I do have rollback installed it's similar to goback only better.This problem started before installing rollback. No other files do I have trouble deleting. I do have system restore turned on probably do not need to now that rollback is installed.I deleted folders and they are in trash. I emptied the trash no folders inside. Not deleted in safe mode. I restarted and they reappear on the desktop. Rollback was not activated during the restart.I checked the folder permissons and all boxes are checked but they are grayed out.The folder is set as read only and I try to change it and hit apply but they cannot be deleted.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. In Documents and Settings, the reason is revealed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to change the icon of my file folders to something else, and somewhere it said that I could do that at the file types tab of folder options in the control panel. I tried it and it didn't work (not important). However, whenever I opened a folder, it just opened search. I went back and looked at the actions and I didn't see open in there, but find was there (not in bold or anything), so I guessed that it was "find"ing instead of opening. I added a new action called "Open" that used explorer.exe and set it to the default action, but now every folder opens in a new window. I can't delete the action at all and have no idea how to change it. I'm new here and am not sure if this thread is where it belongs. (First post btw).

It empties the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and many temporary files but it does not empty the "Temp" folder in Windows XP (C:Documents and Settings(Account Name)Local SettingsTemp) or the "My Temp Files" folder within the "Temp" folder. I've noticed that videos I've watched online get stored in this folder as well as folders full of virus signatures downloaded before doing free online virus scans. Consequently this folder can quickly eat up valuable space on my laptops little hard drive.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI installed a game from MSN,but later uninstalled it using Control Panel>Uninstall Programs.However in my Program Files Folder there remains a folder called MSN Gaming Zone. It has a sub-folder called Windows which in turn has 22 files. The files are all .exe and .dlls.I can't for the life of me delete these folders or the files. If I delete the files they go to the recycle bin, but then 10-15 seconds later reappear back in the MSN Gaming ZoneWindows sub-folder. If I delete them again, they reappear, and there are now 44 files in the recycle folder.The system won't allow me to delete the folders, saying they are in use.I have administrator rights on a Dell Laptop running XP Pro.
