just rebuilt my computer and it seems to freeze about every hour while playing WoW online.I am using on board sound on an ASUS K8V-X with a Sempron 3000+.In checking my event logs, the application lists the following errors at corresponding times to the system freezes. By freez, I mean I can't alt tab out of the program or get the system to recognize any type of input. I have to do a hard reboot every time.

The word "disk" scared me, so I checked the entire Event Viewer, and found 25 of these errors, from Aug 1 2005 through Sep 3 2005. If this event was cataloged earlier, I don't know, because the Event Viewer only goes back to Aug 1. I checked System Restore for Aug 1, 2005 and found a couple of things; 1) an accidental MS "update" to NVIDIA GeForce4 MX driver 5.12 -- but we've had the 6.1.7.7 driver for a long time now. The 5.12 screws up the display resolution, big time. I reinstalled the 6.17; resolution is fine; but I'm wondering if this could have something to do with the Event 51 warning. Also, on that same date, something called Software Distribution Service 2.0 is listed three times, and I don't know why. I don't even know what it is. I've researched the web, and can't find anything that seems to apply -- other than potential for a hard drive crash. Just what I don't need. You can send an Error Report to Microsoft. Then things close down, but everything comes back, except the folder of files that was open before.Then if I go to my "Event Veiwer" under Application I get the 2 Error lines with "event ID 1000 and 1001.

OK I don't know where to start. When my system is rebooted I get a BSOD it goes through BIOS nothing is detected and it BSOD's. Now here is the strange part if I unplug it from power and try to boot again it comes up fine but if I try to shut it down BSOD WTF I have tried everything. BIOS has been re-flashed to latest version for my GA-7VAX MOBO and I have reloaded winXP.. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening. Could it be my MOBO is going bad?

I click No and it directs me to a site that tries to get me to download the software. If I let the page run, the computer becomes disfuctional, and I have to use task manager to close programs and get the computer to respond. I've tried using system restore, adaware SE professional, and Symantec Antivirus to get rid of whatever this may be. Nothing is working. I'm not sure what to do at this point
View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently I opened up my computer to take the dust out of it as I have before. I hadent done so in a long time so there was some caked on dust on some components. I took the RAM out an cleaned it, re-installed it. I also took my vidoe card out because the heat sink had been cloged with dust aswell. After putting everything back and restarting my computer I recived this msg before windows start up. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMand it followed with instruction to use the xp setup disk to repair the problem. so I threw the windows CD in, and tried to repair however the program tells me I have no hard drive installed. Which I do since my computer is 3 years old now and has been working fine. I hadent changed any bios settings, I never disconnected the hard dirve either.
I have a Dell Dimension 8400 series with Windows XP Professional. Ever since I got the computer about a year ago, whenever I try to defragment my primary hard drive I get an error message indicating that I can't defragment the drive because of "inconsistencies detected in the file system". I have an additional internal drive and an additional external drive, both of which I can defragment without problems.
Not sure where to turn; and I haven't called Dell because I'm sure their response will be to re-format the hard drive; and that's a lot of work by the time I re-format, re-install Windows, and re-install all of my software.
A friend of my daughters has a packard bell pc (4 years old). After ridding various virus from the machine and coming to a full stop they decided to use the restore disc (red floppy) and restore to factory default - all appeared to be going well. Machine froze after telling them to remove the floppy, when it came back to life it requested master cd1, which they dont have and dont remember ever having (bearing in mind machine is 4 years old). What do you think the best track would be to contact packard bell for master disc. I wondered whether my copy of xp home would work with their pc and their code - afterall they have purchased the machine etc. or am I being totally blonde. I am quite happy to reformat for them if this is a possibility but dont want to attempt it if there is the possibility it wont work. I realised xp is one machine one copy but not sure whether this is reliant on code or not.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a machine which was returned by a customer. He said "it just stopped working." To make a long story short, I tried doing a system repair from another Windows disc. Everything seemed to be going fine until asked for the product code. I used the code on the label on the machine. It sees it as invalid. Is this because I did a repair with a different copy of Windows? Would I have to do a complete reinstall with the different Windows disc? Can I recover this without wiping out the harddrive?

Now I have to search for the folder each time I view a page within the folder. I have XP SP3 with IE8. Is there any way to change the way favorites works (options)? I have a dell computer and my operating system is Windows XP.
On my old gateway keyboard i would press F11 and i would be able to view full screen, press again and it would return to all tool bars and search menus, etc. I now have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse. When i press F11 it now opens a box indicating "no function has been applied to this key, would you like to assign function to this button, click yes if so.when i click yes it is set to assign for F11 key, but it asks for which task? and nowhere under TASK:, does it have "full screen". Also, i know that if i click on "view" and it drops sub menu, at the very bottom it says "full screen" F11. But if i click on this and it gives me full screen i have no way to return to my tool and search menu.

I'm on XP home SP2 and all updates are current. I run 2 anti virus programs, use SpyBot, Adaware, SpywareBlaster & CW Shredder. I've checked for virus's and run ousecall.henever I see anything suspicious I delete with a vengence and my security settings are properly set. I've shutdown the System Restore, deleted everything suspect in the registry manually, run every antispyware, antivirus program I can think of (regularly too). I shut down and restart the PC and everything I've deleted returns. I never find much of anything to report after running all tests, except mru's and an occasional tracker. My PC works fine, my connection is fast and I experience absolutely no problems I'm aware of. Obviously there's something I'm missing or not doing as I don't visit suspect sites. A helping hand here would be much appreciated.

View 6 Replies View Relatedhi folks, my problem is this, one of my home pcs a packard bell 1.5 p4 shows as having an invalid product key and wont let me update "ok" and when i try to install a fresh xp on top of it(legal) it will only get so far and then i get a stop screen come up and i have to shut it down and reopen using the allready installed xp, i dont have a recovery disc to return it to factory settings which leaves me stuck on the dodgy xp. My ? is this, is there some way i can enter the key without installing a fresh xp and if not how do i get past the stop screen and install. Any help and suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated and i will supply any further info that may be necessary.

I can hit <ctrl+alt+del>, then <k> to lock the screen, immediately try to log back in and it will take over a minute to show me my desktop again.I don't know where to begin to troubleshoot this. I also have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition and grub is the bootloader; however, I don't see how this could affect my WinXp install since Ubuntu is not running at the time.
