I want to split my existing Windows partition into three partitions:
1. Windows system + apps
2. Personal data
3. Swap file
My question is, is that the best order for them? Or should I keep the swapfile partition next to the system partition?I've heard some people say the swap partition should go on the outside of the disk, because it's the part that turns the fastest (so it has faster reads/writes). Or is that an urban legend?
I have an old HP Pavilion (A300N) that I purchased at retail some years ago. It came pre-installed w/ XP and a recovery partition in order to re-load the machine. I've recently re-loaded from the recovery partition, but darn if there isn't just gigs of unwanted software on the drive that came along for the ride when I recovered. This is clearly an OEM install of XP, and there is a Windows Product Key stiker on the case of the machine.
Will the OEM product key work if I re-install XP from a retail installation CD? I would be re-installing on the same box, so same internal components, etc. Seems like this should work, but I'd like to get an opinion from the experts here before I invest the time. Having the old XP box available in a clean state is important to me for other backup and redundancy issues here at home.
Just wondering?? Is there a way to set the order in which items start when I start my computer. The items in the notification tray are what I am talking about. Is it possable to get things to pop into that area in a different order?

But if I go into say, Nba Live 2005, and go to choose controllers, no matter what I do, the thrustmaster is on the top of the list, and the logitech is on the bottom. All the old posts talk about choosing Preferred device in the control panel. By running DxDiag, I can see that setting something as the Preferred Device assigns it Controller ID 0. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have always been able to "drag" sites I have in my favorites list to a position I wanted them, regardless of their name or ABC order or whether or not they were folders or individual sites, but all of a suuden my 98 system lists them in ABC order with the folders first and the individual sites following and I can't change it where they will stay where I move them to. View 1 Replies View RelatedI use COMPUPIC imaging software which allows me to create a slide show where I can change the order of the individual JPEG files in a directory. I can then copy these files into a new directory from within COMPUPIC and it retains the new ordering, not the original alphabetic ordering. So far everything is great. However when I then try to copy these files to a CD they are reordered alphabeticaly. I'm using Windows XP and Roxia CD Creator 5 Basic. This is a problem since I would like to use the reordered file on my CD player to create a slide show in the order I specified in my Compupic imaging software.

I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.
What are the steps needed to access one of my partitions, delete it, then use 1/2 the space and apply to system drive and the other 1/2 to another partition?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new computer.It appears to have been partitioned into a NTFS format and FAT32 format.The default drive for my documents & my pictures etc is the NTFS which I have been using happily. It is Media Centre Edition so I also have a few large files (>4GB) - though I dont keep them long term.NTFS partition has fulled up - but I cant move my large files to other partition to free up space
I've done a little bit of reading but my question is "Should I reformat the FAT32 to make it more of use to me?".I cant really see the need arising to access older OS files, except .JPG's (photo's I had on my old Windows ME Comp) or "Should I move all my smaller files (documents and photo's) to the FAT32 partition and use the NTFS drive for the bigger files?"
My hard disk arrangement is C(primary partition FAT32)for Windows XP
D(extended logical FAT32) for non-os data (movies, pictures etc..)
F(primary NTFS) for Vista..
I am formatting F: and then C: through XP installation CD
(and C->NTFS from FAT32)
is this ok???
will D: be accessible after installing XP on C???
I would like to know if it´s possible to take free space from an extended partition and redistribute it to a primary partition using partition magic 8.0..both partitions are NTFS

At the beginning of the installation process, it gathers system info. Immediately it responds with "no valid system partition" and the only option is to exit from the process. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am receiving the error message about missing or corrupt file and have seen many "fixes" posted on the web. But my trouble is a little different. I have the XP install DVD and when I put it in the computer and start it up it doesn't do anything different, i have tried to change the boot setup (F12 i think upon startup) and try to prioritize it to the number one spot, but it doesn't save the change (although it does look like the drive light is on during startup. I can't boot it up in Safe Mode or any of the options that appear on that screen. Everything I try takes me back to the black screen that says something along the lines of insert the original install disk and press R to go to the restore menu. I cant' get the thing to boot from the DVD. To note - on the screen where you can change the boot order, it doesn't say DVD drive it says CD but the drive came with the computer.
