I'm trying to backup information from Quicken 2000 to a CD and am trying to
figure out an easier way to do it.
1) Can I setup my CD or CD-RW as an alternate drive? HOW?
2) Can I create a desktop icon that will burn the files I specify?
3) Can I link a icon on the desktop to a ".bat" or something with the command line.
I have two IDE hard disks one 40GB=C and the secondary 200GB=D,I have made a copy of documents and setting from C to a new folder backup in drive D.After that this operating finished I preformed format of C and installed from on drive C the MS WIN XP operating system. After the installation the backup FOLDER on drive D, changed to backup FILE without extension. How can I restore my DATA? anyone familiar with this phenomenon
My Windows XP Pro is starting to run slow as all Windows installations do after time. I BackUp and format once a year to keep everything running nice and fast. Here is my issue. Since my Last Format I have added two more drives to my system. I use one as a Backup Drive and the other as a Video Scratch drive. On the BackUp drive I have set Administrator "Write Permissions only" on the whole drive because I don't want anything to happen to it. ( I run myself as a Limited User for safety ).... Now Users can read and Execute but just can't write to the drive.
I was recently advised to add and run CCleaner on my system and it appears to be working very well, are there any other small programmes I should think of adding to help my system.
For nearly two months now, my PC freezes during boot up on alternating boots. This is as regular as clockwork, and has not varied, even one time. It freezes at the point where the Windows XP Home logo screen is displayed and always just after the keyboard lights flash (Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights). The boot freezes began happening shortly after I replaced my old CRT monitor with a new Acer AL2016W LCD 20-inch monitor.
The Explorer program (%systemdrive%program filesinternet exploreriExplorer.exe) creates the familiar Windows interface, but you can use this setting to specify an alternate interface. If you enable this setting, the system start the interface you specify instead of Explorer.exe.To use this setting, copy your interface program to a network share or to your system drive. Then, enable this setting, and type the name of the interface program, including the file name extension, in the Shell name text box. If the interface program file is not located in a folder specified in the Path environment variable for your system, enter the fully qualified path to the file.If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the setting is ignored and the system displays the Explorer interface.START > RUN > GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > SYSTEM > FIND CUSTOM USER INTERFACE > RIGHT CLICK > PROPERTIES > CLICK ENABLE > FIND AN ALTERNATE USER INTERFACE > OK
This tweak is used prevent windows XP from using mirror Video driver when accesing some program.1.Some program or games like Ghost Recon, use alternate Video driver when it can't recognise the Primary Video card driver.2.Alternate driver lack AGP support and performance. So this tweak will prevent window XP from using this alternate driver whenever it was called for.3.Some bug may appear when using the primary Video driverHere's how to do it:-Run Regedit.-Go to. --> "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM CurrentControlSetControlVideo"-There will be 4 'display device GUID' key.-Expand all 4 key.-Open the 'subkey' labelled "000" -Change any 'DWORD' value labelled "MirrorDriver" from '1' to '0'.-Close regedit, restart.4. My graphic card is soo slow (SiS based graphiccard) so, if my AGP texturing capabilities disabled, my computer will go soo slow.5. I use a program named "POWERSTRIP" to determine my AGP capabilities (and to overclockmy Graphic Card).
I have an external USB hard drive. I have 5 computers on a local network. I tried connecting the drive to one of the computers and mapping its location from the other four computers and setup a backup job using the included backup utility in windows XP but nothing happened. The drive appeared as having 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free from the other computers.
I'm looking for some sort of hard drive backup or imaging software that I can use in the following way:Plug in an external DVD 16x USB burner then Boot to a CD on the PC. The software would load, and I could backup the hard drive to the DVD burner - maybe several media used.Later I could plug in the external USB DVD burner, boot to the CD again and restore all the data from the DVD to the hard drive.Does such software exist? I don't want to install anything to the OS.
Is there a free software I can use to create a backup of my drive c:?I want to create the backup in a 4.7GB DVD but that DVD should be bootable. So that when my system crashes then I will not have to install all the apps again from scratch. I tried xxclone but it is only Hard Disk to Hard Disk. Acronis I tried but windows does not boot.
I need to learn more about backups. Bottom line is what do I do right now to make sure what I need is saved, because there's some indications that my hardware may be failing. But I want to do it right from the git-go so I don't waste a lot of time redoing things.
A) I have read the 1/26/06 thread started by cway's question--["Originally Posted by cway I am a 'Novice' to Backups, but am trying to learn..."]. It all seems to make sense to me.
B) Now I want to use what Stallcup (in that post) suggests as the 3rd option--["3) You want to avoid having to reinstall WinXP and have the quick, less labor intensive way of frequently backing up programs files and data." namely "frequently clone the system HDD to the backup HDD. In this way, if the system HDD gets corrupted, I can clone the backup HDD back to the system HDD"]
C) I have MAJOR concerns about what Bob Cerelli mentions about having outdated datafiles backed up--["...data has changed since the image was made, you will have old data restored. But a lot depends on how the computer is orgainized. For example, if just the OS and programs are on one partition which is imaged, and data on another, then restoring that first partition it will not affect data."] I have ADD-like memory problems about when I back up what, and I can't afford to overwrite new data with old...
Soooooo... I'm planning to buy a 200gb external hard drive. Then what?
1) what software do you recommend? a) Should I use the HP software that came with my computer? or buy something? b) Ghost? is that Symantec? (Can someone say more about the concerns with using that software?) c) Does "ghosting" mean the same thing as "cloning" (in Stallcup's post--#2 above)?
2) how do I know if all my OS and programs are on one partition? (I have an HP and the hard drive is obviously partitioned into "HP_Pavilion (C)" and "HP_Recovery (D)".
After backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.
I recently got a new computer with windows XP and I want to make a backup copy of my hard drive. I've been using win 98se in the past and always backed up my drive using the "Drive Copy" software and that always worked just fine. I tried using it to copy my new Win XP drive and found that it has a different format called NTFS. My Drive Copy doesn't seem to work with the new drive. Any suggestions? Do I need to reformat the new blank drive I want to copy to?
I'm thinking of reinstalling Windows XP SP1 with the Dell CD that came with my computer (it's about 4 yrs old). I want to backup my C drive but I don't see an option to do so. I need some help on that and any comments on my reinstall are welcome.
I recently used system restore in WinXP and now in all of my program directories there are additional folders named Data with a folders name resources in those. In the resources folder are the exe files for the programs and all shortcuts I have for those programs point to these exe files. So when I use one of those shortcuts two instances of the program opens and slows my computer down.
After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.
My hard rive at the moment it making random sounds sometimes and is poretty much faulty so I am getting it replaced. What I was qondering is that is there any program that will backup my whole hard drive onto another hard drive I have and then when I get my new one all my settings will be the same. by the way I am aware I can just use my other hard drive as mine but I need that for anyther computer later
I am backing up data to an external USB hard drive. What should I backup? I don't have enough room to backup my whole hard drive onto the external. I'm looking for suggestions of specific folders ie. Documents and Settings, etc. as opposed to advice like "whatever can't be downloaded or replaced easily".
I have a pc with Windows 2000 installded and has two partition C and D. Iwould like to backup the whole drive including both partitions and transfer it to a better pc I have, but the new pc of mine has XP installed on it. I already backedup the hard drive to the network file server using windows 2000 default backup wizard, but when I want to open the file on my XP machine, It curupts the system files and next time I restart it crashes. I need to findout a way to backup the hd exactly as is on 2000 and transfer it to Xp.
i recently added an extra hard drive(40gb)internal to my e-machine running wxp-sp2.the new hd came with files i'd like to clear first.then,i want to copy my entire c (os) to the new d drive.is there a way to do so for free?
I have 4 PC's all running WinXP/SP3 on a workgroup using simple sharing. All PC's had access to all other PC's shared folders and external backup drives. Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.
Recommend me a free program to basically copy files from windows to the portable hard drive? I don't need compression, and I don't want the entire backup in one file, like .zip or .bkf. Normally I would just copy the files over, but I would lose the timestamps and all the attributes.
I am looking for some backup software that can backup files and folders to another HDD and verify all files are not corrupted, then email me on completion of the backup outcome. Does anyone know of a good backup program that can do this?
I copied a large directory to a backup drive, preparing to replace the HD on which the directory currently exists. After copying, the "size" of source and target both match:7.14 GB (7,673,318,222 bytes). The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match. On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Should I be concerned that the copy was not completed correctly?
i was following someones guide to remove some viruses, in this proccess i turned off system restore and went into safe mode, but instead of normal safe mode minimal i went into safe mode minimal (alternate shell) which i am now stuck in, i have tried a system restore command which wont work because i'm in safe mode
I want to back up my files to an external hard drive using Windows Backup, but it is not shown as an option. The only options shown are the floppy and f: drives. Can you use this program to back up to an external drive? If so, how do you tell it where to send the data?
PC (XP) wont boot, says NTLDR missing.I wonder if anyone could give me any advice about how to salvage my firefox bookmarks from my system which wont even boot. (the bookmarks are all i need to salvage from the c drive as my downloads files and documents are safely stored on my 2nd hard drive) My home PC (windows XP) died a death the other day playing up, wont boot now, says ntldr is missing, wont even boot up in safe mode, it doesnt get as far as giving me an option. (tried swopping cables around and stripped bare to the basics needed to boot but no such luck there either). Boots up with a unix live disc but i noticed it cant detect the c drive on the system, altho it does in bios.
I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just, well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
I have a windows xp media center edition, with a dell xps m140 notebook, with 60GB hardrive. I heard people say to have a c and d drive, so you can backup one of your hard drives to the other one. But I cant figure out a way to get a d: drive. What am I suppose to do? Also after I get a d: drive, how do you backup the c: drive to the d: drive? Also I recently purchased DVD-R's to backup my hardrive, but when I put the dvd in and go to the backup option in system tools, it says a need a removable storage service, so can I use the dvd's or do I need an external hard drive?
