Whenever I accidentally leave my Smartdisk FireLite portable hard drive in on shutdown or boot up, before XP displays the Welcome menu I get a BSOD saying BAD_POOL_ERROR shows up. I usually remember to take it out before I shut down and plug it in after I log in, but when I don't it's really annoying having to reboot right after I had just booted.

I can not find anything in common with any of these crashes and have NOT installed any new drivers or hardware.What would be the best way to determine what's causing the trouble?

I thought about an OS re-install but can't find my disk, all I can find is the disk for my fiancee's Laptop. Hers was XP pro and mine was Xp home so I didn't think it would work, and besides I can't find any product codes or serial numbers for either. Am I going to have to format and buy a new OS or what?

Every single time I boot up Windows, it dies before getting to the login screen. Please help, as my huge important thesis papers are on there, due next week, and I'm basically ****ed if I can't recover them. Being the idiot I am, I didn't back them up, so that's about 3 months of work right there. If you guys can help me fix this, you are my saviors.
View 9 Replies View RelatedXP fails to start in any mode. XP has been reloaded from an image with no change in situation. (I was reimaging the machines anyway.) I have not yet had a successful boot since reimaging, and hence XP (mini)setup has not completed (the image was prepared using sysprep to allow it to be rolled out to multiple machines. These machines are connected to an 2003 AD Domain). Currently I'm running memtest86+ from Knoppix. Knoppix booted with only one error about not passing in proper display information. (Perhaps the graphics card is going?). The last file loaded in a safe mode bootup is mup.sys, which leads me further to believe that it's a hardware problem (and that's backed up by Google).
I've opened it up, cleaned it out with a little (make that a lot) of compressed air. Boy, was it dusty. I forgot to mention, this computer is at a high school, if you want an idea of what the users are like . It's a magnet/gifted/selective enrollment (for you Chicago people) high school though. Any suggestions on things to try? I didn't see anything obviously wrong on the motherboard: that is, no exploded capicitors, disconnected cables, missing RAM, etc. I'm running memtest now, however we won't know the results of that until tomorrow. I'm going to swap out the HD with a different one and we'll see if that's any better.
Hello, i have had this problem in the past where I would get the bsod on startup. As soon as my desktop loaded in fact. It had to do with a display driver I had installed.Since then I have a new machine that running without a hitch for a while now,and this time I do not have those display drivers installed . The problem started happening after I did a scan with malware bytes and super anti-spyware and after I cleaned what it found I got the BSOD on reboot.

It BSOD'd the other night after I was browsing the internet. My computer was acting really sluggish, and I restarted it. Then I got the BSOD. I left it for the morning when I re-started it, and it started fine, for a few minutes, but after a minute or so I got the same BSOD. This happened several months ago and I fixed it by opening up my PC and re-setting the video card. I did it again and this time it didn't help any...........
Put the machine in standby. Came back to it, hit the power button and it wouldn't wake up completely, it stopped at the background, would load icons or respond to any keys or buttons. Pressed and held power until it shut down.When it tries to startup, it gets to the part where its a black screen and says Windows loading, with the scrolling load bar. After that I get the blue screen with the message below.Same result when trying to load using safe mode except the BSOD flashes quicker and is gone.Is there any way to get beyond this point, or is a repair from the Windows CD the only or best solution? I have backups of my most important data with Carbonite, so I'm not too afraid of losing data, but re-loading everything I have installed would be a major kick in the bits.

The specs that i know for sure) are:I booted my comp a few dyas ago and out of nowhere I get a BSOD before that screen with Windows XP comes up. I say to myself "ok, maybe its just one time" and reboot. I get it yet again and reboot. I finally get to the windows log in screen and I get ANOTHER BSOD after it finished loading. Restarted again, worked fine. I analyze my minidumps and it said the most probably cause of these crashes was hardware. At this point I recall a computer technician saying the capacitators on my mobo were bursting, but this was a good 8 months ago, so Im not sure if its FINALLY giving out or if my RAM thats failing.

There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
The run link is missing from my startup menu...can anyone help me find it? I know this sounds dumb, but I really need to restore it to my startup so I
can take care of some other problems I'm having.
How do you remove the "Common Startup" items from the startup list in msconfig for Windows XP? I did locate and remove the "Run" items that are located in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun.

I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. It has only started happening yesterday and its the same result with all dvd's i have tried so far. If i cause the bsod to appear too many times my computer becomes totally unable to start up(it reboots at the welcome screen when windows is loading) and even safemode doesn't work. View 8 Replies View Relatedlast week, my computer froze and my dad unplugged the power cord since he was the one using and now the xp keeps rebooting. it does not matter if i choose, safe mode, last known config, it keeps rebooting. it goes as far as letting you see the xp welcome screen, then for a second, you can see the bsod and it reboots. i have dual boot fedora/xp, both os in one hard drive. i replaced the original mobo about 3 months ago and now fedora does not work either. last night i downloaded pclinuxos live cd and booted off that cd and i can see all my files in the xp partition. so i thought it would be a simple, boot off the xp cd, select install xp, then select repair existing partition, but now after i select "install xp", the c partition shows up empty, as if there were no files in it. this is odd because when i restart, and select to boot windows normally it goes as far as the xp welcome screen, so obviously, xp is there. i also think there is something wrong with the mbr since i cant no longer see the grub dual boot selection screen. any help that you can provide is appreciated. this box is used in a small business and i would like to avoid having to reinstall. my specs, intel p4 2.8 lga 775, 1gb dual ram pc2 4300, intel mobo,
