I'm trying to get XP Home SP2 to recognize a new HD using a USB closure with a brand new seagate Barracuda 7200.7 I've tried every combo of jumper settings different usb ports no good.I get the message that a new USB device is found but then I get "USB Device Not Recognized"

The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device". Then about 1 minute later it shows the following message

This one has SATA drives rather than the IDE like my earlier one.I wanted to get some files off the old hard drives so purchased an Adaptec USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure. It was recognized via plug and play (no drivers for the enclosure needed) and I was able to get some files off. However the next day when I tried to access the drive, it didn't show in Windows Explorer.I removed it from USB plug and tried the USB port next to the one I had previously tried. It recognized the drive and I was able to get more files.
However the same thing happened after I turned it off and rebooted the next day.I was unable to get it to work in either one of the front ports.I then tried one of the back ports, everything worked as before. Again, though, after turning it off, I am unable to access it through any of the 3 ports I've previously tried! What is going on? I still have stuff to get off it and I'm running out of ports.

I just bought me a new SATA 250GB Hard Drive and a external hard drive enclosure. I received the items today and I just realize the hard drive enclosure doesn't build into the way to connect to the SATA 7-pin data connector. All it has is the Parallel ATA 40-pin data connector. Can anyone recommend any external hard drive enclosure that can connect to SATA connector directly. And there is a main reason why I choose a SATA hard drive.

I was trying to remove the login screen on windows by deleting a few accounts of mine, just to discover that the login screen is still there, only difference is now the username is "administrator" of which I have no clue what the password is.. SO. I tried a bunch of things such as booting from a password cracking image file, with no success (says disk is "dirty") and now I'm thinking that if I booted with a different hard drive and put my original drive in an enclosure I should be able to get into it and make some changes to fix this problem, by maybe erasing or resetting the password.. right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a very tired samsung X20 laptop. It has: 1.7 ghz, 2 gig ram, 250 gig western digital hard drive WD2500BEVE - with IDE type connection. Windows xp home with sp3.All has been rosey untill the connection where hard drive is placed onto the motherboard was broken. Not a problem I though as I have an enclosure to put the drive in then connect using the usb. All wired up I turned the computer on, nothing in the drive bay and the same hard drive in the enclosure connected via usb.

FYI, the Fujitsu drive from my laptop has Vista OS on it and my PC is an XP OS.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop with 80GB hard drive and 3 GB RAM. Dell do told me I can have only a total of 120GB hard drive on my machine. Dell forum said that is not right. The Dell manual states there is are 2 bays for 1" high hard drives and it gives installation directions for adding a second internal drive. I have 3 external hard drives for backups, photos and much of what I don't need or want on the C drive. I need to install more programs for photography since they can not be run from an external drive according to those I have asked.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
current HD going bad, have second HD installed and using as back but now i need to make the second HD my primary, can i do this without having to reformat in order to add booting files.

well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I have added some folders & a drive to the "send to" folder and they are listed.But when I right click on a file or folder they are not listed in the options in the drop down box.I right click and drag the folder and drop it in the "send to" folder and select to copy and/or shortcut and it puts it there. What am I doing wrong? That's the way I did it in 98.

My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? View 6 Replies View RelatedIve recently bought the "Enermax Laureate 3,5" HDD Enclosure Powered (USB 2.0)" and i put in a "Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JB 250GB (7200rpm/uATA100)".
The problem is that i have a folder in there with the name "software" every time i want to access this file the external disk crashes and i need to turn off the power and turn it on again.The other folders works ok.i have erase and create again the file but nothing happens.i have the same folder with the same files in built-in hard disk and works perfecty.
I can not access hard disk properties because Windows Explorer hangs whenever I Right click on a hard drive icon. I am running WXP pro SP2 completely up to date with updates.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have one laptop that has been corrupted and will no longer boot. I have since removed the HD and place it in an USB enclosure. I have connected it to another Laptop running xp and have no problem viewing the contents of the drive.
At first I was unable to access the administrators documents, but after booting in safe mode, I changed ownership of the entire drive. At this point I am able to access every folder though I can not open any of the files.
my laptop gave me the blue screen and the boot disk could not get it back up.I purchased a plug n play USB 2.5" hard disk enclosure.I connected it to my second laptop and it recognizes it as another drive F:I can see all the directories and files, but cannot access them.I ran a Scan for Virus on the F drive and it found nothing.I get an error popup "File or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I double click.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a usb 2.0 Vantec NexStar 3 external hard drive enclosure, it is packed with a Western Digital 80gig hard drive. After about 10 minutes of continuous use it will go unreconized by my computer and i have to restart the external drive in order for my computer to see it again. Is this a hardware failure in the enclosure or is it my computer? Now, if there is on and off use (like listening to mp3's or videos) it will go a lot longer time before it quits on me.
