A Screen Pop Up After Boot Up

Sep 6, 2007

I am sorry if I sound completely ignorant, but I need help.I have a Dell Isprion 8600 Laptop with Windows Xp, service pack 2.For 6 months now I have a screen pop up after boot up that read:The application or dll c:windowswinmm.dll is not a valid windows image please check this against your installation diskette.I had a friend tell me to insert the dick that came with computer and that it should fix any errors in windows.Well when I do this, it tells me I have a newer version and it work work basically.I have read some of the forums, but get confused wit some of the lingo terminology computer language.I hope there is someone out there that can help me.I started to mess with ms-config and research what each startup program was before unchecking any.The only one that I unchecked came back as a worm. Also the volume key does not work anymore, when you try to mute or turn the volume up or down, the volume toolbar pops up, but nothing happens. Not sure if this can be fixed either.

Black Screen After Boot Screen, No Welcome Screen, No Logon Screen

Oct 28, 2008

its my previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help!

Boot Sequence Hangs At Logo Boot Screen With Progress Bar

Oct 26, 2007

On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.

I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.

Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.

Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

Blue Screen Error Bring Boot Selection Screen - Reinstall Operating System

Nov 12, 2009

Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

Computer Wont Boot, Black Screen Before Login Screen?

Jul 15, 2007

my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.

Next time, generally it would work perfect. So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Won't Boot. Black Screen With No Cursor After The Logo Screen

Aug 9, 2010

it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me how to fix this?

System Wont Boot: Blue Screen, "boot Device Inaccesible"?

May 15, 2006

My pc was running fine when it just started beeping like a warning klaxon. Rebooting didn't help, but rebooting into safe mode then normal mode did. Then 1 hour later while running spysweeper, I stopped the scan early because it was taking too long. It detected 1 adware and 1 trojan, but the log said the trojan (ruin) could not be quarantined and some threat was still in memory, despite a problem free pc except for the beeping which I thot was resolved. After exiting spysweeper

my pc locked up and could not be turned off manually, so I unplugged the cord in back. Then I got a blue screen after it tried rebooting. The bootup started normally, but then a blue screen read as follows, more or less-If this is the first time you are seeing this message reboot your pc. Otherwise check for viruses, remove any new hard drives or hard drive controllers. or refer to your startup manual. I can't even boot in safe mode.

Get Rid Of Dual Boot Screen

I was one of the many millions of Vista Beta testers out there, dual-booting on my wife's machine with XP Pro and Vista.

After awhile, I really got tired of Vista and I think it's a POS, so I stopped running it. When I installed the OS, I had it on its own partition on the HDD. Xp, naturally, was on a partition of its own as well.

What I did was to delete the Vista partition. But when I boot the system, I still see the "Boot into Vista or XP" screen

Welcome Screen Hang At Every Boot Up

Oct 28, 2007

I did a clone backup of my old installation of windows xp (Home Ed.) to a new hard drive, after that, I disconnected the old hd and attempted to fix windows to no avail... I got frustrated after many attempts and decided to do a clean install (on the new H.D.). Windows setup perfectly... Today I tried to boot up with the old hd into windows to backup some quicken files I needed and windows wont boot... it will just hang at the welcome screen and stay there... Sometimes when I Alt-tab I see 2 processes 1 (Wndows Logon) 2 (windows welcome screen)... but that's it... I've tried everything but doing a repair install, since I'm afraid about getting stuck in the repair install (it has happened to me twice).

Black Screen On SP2 Boot

Jun 18, 2005

I never thought that I, who can usually troubleshoot problems on my own, would be posting this, but here I am I have a Dell 8400 computer that is about 6 months old. Recently, I tried to install Debian Linux onto a spare IDE hard drive that I had. I did so, and rebooted to run off of my Windows SATA drive after I had installed linux to the IDE drive. I had to leave the house, but when I came back, a black, blank screen greeted me. It had been over two hours and Windows normally boots in less then a minute tops. I resarted, booted off of the correct hard drive, got the NTLDR prompt with the correct boot.ini information and selected the option to boot WIndows XP Normally (my other option is a /safeboot). Black Screen Again! I know that my files are still on the drive, as I can boot into Debian and mount the drive and everything shows up fine and can be accessed. I also can read files fine by booting off of a UBC4Win or BartPe disk. The power supply, videocard, and heatsink fans all are running fine, so the issue is most likely a driver issue.
