On Setting Up New PC - Original Software CD
Jun 18, 2005
From searching and reading past posts I've come to the following conclusion
and would like someone to verify please... The best way to transfer all
pertinent data to a new pc (both with Windows XP home version) is toLoad all programs in with original software CD's then,Use the "File Transfer Wizard" found in the help/support section to transfer all the files and folders. Correct?
I assume I can use a crossover usb cable with the "Wizard" Is there a way to get to the File Transfer Wizard without

First off, my Default Margins are: Top 1" Bottom 1" Left 1:25" Right 1.25" from the "Page Setup" Menu But when I try to paste into a new doc [right click>New>Microsoft Word Document]the margins, and other settings, I'm sure, can be way off. I finally realized that when I open a new doc, these settings reflect the last saved document's settings, even tho the default settings are as above. This makes for a mess sometimes when trying to paste forms, etc that rely on default settings/spacings. Office XP is too complex for me, but I'm hoping someone knows where/if there is a setting to over-ride and ALWAYS open a new doc with ALL default settings, as if in a new install.

I just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.

I am currently working on a computer for a friend. It's a Lenovo desktop. 3000 series I believe. There is supposed to be a recovery partition on this machine but it is screwed and I do not have the recovery CDs. Getting them from Lenovo seems to be out of the question as they said they would only send them to me if the computer was still under warranty.I am trying to reinstall XP Pro. I have a valid OEM product key on the side of the machine. I figured it was OEM because the key would not work with any ordinary XP Pro CD.Does anyone know of a way to reinstall XP Pro on this machine using the CD key on the side without the recovery CD?

Long story short, I replaced my friend's motherboard in her eMachines computer. I've been told that we'd need a new copy of XP because the new MoBo won't be compatible. The copy we got ended up being the upgrade version. Is it possible to run the upgrade and replace the original XP with this new one?

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop that became infected with a pretty nasty virus. I have had to remove the infected HD from the machine. Instead of trashing the machine, I would like to just purchase an entirely new HD for this machine. I am guessing that when purchasing a new HD that it does NOT already come with an O/S already installed. If this guess is correct, my question is this:Can I use the original O/S Reinstallation CD that came with the machine to get the O/S installed on the new HD? ORDo I have to purchase the O/S along with the new internal HD? If more information is needed before an answer can be provided, please let me know what is needed.

I plan on restoring my HP a330n. The last time I restored I had driver problems with my sound card, and LAN. Is their anyway I can save the driver to disk and apply when restore is complete? Also I DO NOT have my original restore disk, but I have the option to just use the in-system restore option, or create disk. Should I create or does it not matter? Also how can I restore the system completely, the last time i did "Complete Restore" there were still unwanted files in the PC.

So installed WinXP Pro on my 3 month old HP pavillion personal computer and I am having an issue with the ram Apparently windows is only recognizing half of it.Here are some of the most pertinent details: AMD Turion64 ML-34,Radeon Xpress 200m w/128 MB on the video card. There are 512 MB installed DDR, Dual Channel. The bios is recognizing all 512 of the ram, but windows properties only shows 256.dxdiag also shows 256, but CPU-Z shows all 512.Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Has anyone actually experienced this phenomenon? I don't know if this is just a reading error, causing no performance difference, but I think I can feel the difference, but since its pretty new and the operating system has only been installed for about 2 weeks, I haven't gotten to get a good feel of what its supposed to be. I have also noticed in the past couple days that it takes a very long time to boot.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." My problem is that I'm unable to location the original Setup CD-ROM. Can this CD be ordered from the manufacturer? Also, whenever this Setup CD is required to repair, will My Documents be effected?

I want to wipe the harddrive of my HP Pavilion desktop and start from scratch. However, I have moved since I purchased it many years ago and I don't have any of the original disks. Is there any way to access a function in the harddrive to wipe what's there and just re-install what it came with at purchase? And will it be able to connect to the internet to get drivers, etc.? Sorry if this is a question that has been asked before... I am semi-literate when it comes to computers but I have never done a complete reinstall without the original disks that came with the system.

I have four legal copies of Windows XP, two Home and two Professional.Whenever I need to reinstall onto a new computer or a repaired system, it is now a two-step process that takes almost three hours:Perform the reinstall,Apply the patch to SP2.Microsoft Support wants $30 + tax/shipping to send me replacement CDs that have SP2 on them, and before I bite that bullet, I am wondering if there is a more creative solution. Is there any way to create an SP2 CD from the combined components of an original CD and the components of the downloaded patch? Any other solutions or paths to take to resolve this? I imagine this has been a source of discussion for some time, although a Google search did not turn up anything, perhaps owing to my uncertainty over which keywords to use.

I'm having trouble changing my product key. when I upgraded from 98 to XP pro,it was with a pirate copy of XPpro CD. However, I very soon saw the error of my ways and legalised my software online by purchasing a licence with which came a new product key. This was all done online and automatically. Now, here's the thing. Due to an old and failing C drive, I have installed a new hard drive with the intention of transfering all of my files over to it before the old one gives up completely and I lose everything.
The problem is, although my existing OS and product key are completely legal, the only system CD I have is my old pirate one which will not load using the legal key.I have loaded it using the old key with the intention of changing it afterwards but, having followed the process to change it, when I run Jelly Bean Keyfinder, it shows the old key.I have also tried a microsoft windows verification and it confirms that it is not a legal licence. The process I used to change the key was: Change the OOBE Timer number in regedit, Run c:windowssystem32oobemsoobe.exe /a and run change product key, reboot and run c:windowssystem32oobemsoobe.exe /a again which tells me that windows is already activated.
