Upgraded From Windows 7 To Windows 8 / Microsoft Word Has Disappeared

Oct 28, 2012

Today, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The installation went fine, and I've been spending the last hour or so customising the start screen and generally getting familiar with it.

Everything seems fine...except Microsoft Word has done a disappearing act...to some extent.

Prior to upgrading, I had a number of software pinned to my toolbar on Windows 7, such as Powerpoint, Word, Chrome etc. When I use the desktop on Windows 8, this remains intact.

However, when I attempted to search for Word in the apps menu to pin to the start bar, it is nowhere to be found. Literally all the other Microsoft Office things are there, publisher, powerpoint, excel...all of them, but no Word. I can't find it anywhere other than on the taksbar on the desktop view.

Maintenance :: Microsoft Word Keeps Minimizing

Mar 18, 2014

Microsoft Word keeps minimizing when I am using it. I finally came to realize that its whenever I unconsciously put my mouse to the bottom right hand of the screen or else it drifts there. I know that Windows 8 has this "charms" thing and so I am wondering if it does this because when the mouse goes to the bottom right it is telling it to show me the desktop?

Setup Installation :: Upgraded To 8.1 Without Microsoft Account - Stuck In Sysprep

Sep 15, 2014

I'm working on a Toshiba L75D-A7283. Upon checkin, symptoms were booting up to a black screen to log in, then a black screen with cursor after that. Fixed that with a system restore point and a virus removal. My coworker upgraded the machine to 8.1 over the weekend without a Microsoft Account. When it failed, he put the machine into audit mode, I'm guessing so that we could have updates finished and have the system set up with a Microsoft Account when the customer came back in.

However, we can't get it out of audit mode. We've tried several things, including this:Sysprep Error with windows 8.1 At the setupact log, the error that presents is: spopk.dll: Sysprep will not run on an upgraded OS. You can only run Sysprep on a custom (clean) install version of Windows.

At that point the sysprep fails, and I'm stuck in audit mode after a restart. I don't know how to get this machine back to vanilla Windows 8 without a full reinstall.

Windows 8 - Partition Disappeared / How To Locate

Dec 31, 2013

I have 2 external drives.

One is 1tb ( western digital )

The other is 320gb

They were plugged into my old laptop which had xp sp3 , but i got a new base system with windows 8.

The day after I got it , it wasn't showing the 320 GB drive , but i shutdown , switched it off at the wall and it came back into view on next startup.

I had a partition. I cant remember what drive it was on , but its disappeared. I had a lot of ebooks , manuals and photos stored on it , but when i open "computer" , its just not there , even after shutting down , turning off at the wall and rebooting.

Still very new to windows 8 , so im hoping its something as simple as "view" settings , which I have checked , but maybe missed something ?

How to locate my missing partition ?

Windows 8.1.1 RT - Some Apps Disappeared And Other Broken

Apr 28, 2014

Lots of my apps deleted themselves without me doing anything, and some other (the Microsoft ones: weather, bing news etc, plus Flipboard) are just broken. When I try to open them, there's a page of the color of the app (red for news, light blue for weather......) without the app's logo and then it comes back to start screen.

I also tried to download them again from the store, and this is what happen. Under the "instal" button there's a message: "You already have this app. You can download to this computer", which it's ok, but if I click on Install, notification appears on the top right; tapping on it doesn't do anything, and the app isn't in the app folder. When I uninstalled and re-installed Weather (which wasn't disappeared, but broken) the app worked again.

The only "weird" thing that I remember I have done is to empty the bin, as I had memory full and wanted to gain some space.

Do you think this can be a malware? I already tried to open a new account, and it works just fine.

Dell :: XPS 15 L521X Cannot Be Upgraded To Windows 8.1 Pro

Oct 24, 2013

XPS-15 L521X running Windows 8 Pro.  I have Intel Rapid Storage Manager installed and operating (thinking this may matter).  I have tried 4 times to upgrade to 8.1, no-go.  It completes the upgrade to the point of restarting after making all configurations (according to the message text), but on restart it goes from Dell logo to blank screen, though I can hear the disk churning, and the mouse shows when I swipe the keypad; mouse also shows a busy indicator.  I tried leaving the system alone last night for 6 hours, but when I came back it was still churning on the blank screen.  When I shut down the system via power button and re-booted, it restored the original windows 8 and gave me a message that the system could not be upgraded to 8.1.

I tried uninstalling my firewall/virus program and that didn't work.  At this point I don't care to guess anymore... I may call tech support and see what they say.  I see by others' posts around the internet that there seem to many problems upgrading to 8.1.

Windows 8 Start Menu Disappeared Items?

Aug 2, 2013

When I logged in my windows 8 I was surprised when I found that most of the tiles that were in my start menu disappeared even the desktop tile and the store tile.

I found an article that suggests creating the apps shortcuts and pasting them in this folder

%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

But when I opened this folder I was surprised again to find all my tiles shortcuts there. Nothing is missing at all even the desktop shortcut and store shortcut are there.

Why don't these apps show up in the start menu? I don't remember doing any thing the last time I used my laptop except uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Basic 6

Note: after some research I found a reference to this path

C:Users[User]AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsApplication Shortcuts

When I'm pasting my shortcuts there they are appearing in Start Screen and I also noticed that when I install any new application it is not added to the start screen automatically as usual ...

Upgraded To Windows 8 And Now Unable To Get Any Web Pages To Load

I can't imagine I am the only one who has run in to this.

Maybe it's a device driver; but I can't get to the Dell site to do any diagnostics.

Windows 8.1 - Right-Click Menu For Explorer Disappeared?

Jul 1, 2013

I've been dabbling with Windows 8.1 a little bit, and noticed something missing from it--at least, it's missing on my computer. I'd like to know if I am the only person experiencing this.

The problem is quite simple: The right-click menu for the Explorer taskbar icon has disappeared, and it doesn't let me close my open Explorer windows.

I have desktop shortcut icons for the C drive, and two external drives. Also, I have a shortcut icon for my USB flash drive, which I usually keep plugged in for backup.

I can have several Explorer windows open by clicking these icons. They appear stacked in the taskbar. (See diagram below.) If I have only one Explorer window open, the menu will have a Close Window option. If two or more windows are open, it will say Close All Windows.

This menu, and these options, seem to have disappeared with Windows 8.1 Preview.

Upgraded To Windows 8.1 - Laptop Black Screen

Sep 27, 2014

I have a Gateway NE56R41u with an Intel B960 Processor, 4GB DDR3 Memory and running Windows 8.1 I have had the Laptop for 1 year. I got the info above from stickers on the Laptop so there is no more info I can give you. It originally came with Windows 8 and I upgraded it to 8.1 when that became available. When I boot the laptop it goes to the first screen, I click on the icon and the password screen comes up, I put in the password and it goes to a black screen with nothing on it and stays there on that black screen. I tried hitting the F key on boot up but nothing happens. It is not the screen, not the graphics card, otherwise I wouldn't see the first two screens. It acts like the OS has been wiped off.

Upgraded To 8.1 - Brief White Flashes When Opening New Windows

I use a custom theme with dark colors. I like dark background and light text. The problem is that very often when I open a new explorer (like My Computer) or browser window (like Firefox), the whole background of the window/frame becomes white for a very brief period before showing the actual content of the window and assuming the dark background color that I assigned.

Windows 8 All Tiles Apps And Programs Have Disappeared?

Jun 23, 2014

Yesterday I was watching a video on YouTube no problems when all of a sudden it shut down and didn't want to load back up, after clicking the shortcut on the desktop a dialogue window popped up saying that 'this program isn't in this location' (or something similar) and if I wanted to delete the shortcut. Thinking nothing much of it I rebooted my machine.

After rebooting, some of my tiles were missing and the rest of the tiles had a small black 'X' on the corner, I couldn't open any of my apps and searching for them resulted in the icon popping up in the charms bar but was unable to open them. Literally 20 seconds later all of the tiles disappeared, the charms bar stopped working and the whole screen looked completely blank.

One more reboot later and I have no tiles on the main start screen, no tiles when I swipe down to all apps, no search results for control panel or task manager, the charms bar works but all I can do is access my WiFi network, volume and screen or search.

The tablet is a Dell Latitude 10 ST2.

Here's a few photos

Windows 8.1 - Pictures Folder Disappeared From Libraries List?

Dec 17, 2013

Windows 8.1. I built a new computer yesterday, and installed Windows 8.1. I had previously run Windows 7 on my older computer.

Everything was working great, till today I decided to move my documents, pictures, music, and video folders to a different drive. I succeeded fine with documents, music, and video, however pictures seem to be a little messed up.

see the below screenshot:

At the top, you will see it lists folders for music twice, both folders show my music files in them. I realize these are probably just pointers to the music folder, but now I have music twice, and pictures is not up there.

However, when I check to show libraries in the navigation pane, you will on the same screen shot, it does list documents, music, pictures, and video there as it should.

How I can get those folders back up at the top as they should be?
