Setup Installation :: Windows 8.1 Refresh / Recovery - Some System Files Missing

Nov 28, 2013

I recently did an update of my machine from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. The update process did not show any errors or warnings and by the time it finished I was under the impression that everything went smooth.

After the update I was testing the environment and discovered that one of my desktop applications stopped working, I went to the developer's website and indeed I found there is a known issue with their software on 8.1 and to solve it, I had to completely uninstall the software and then install it once more. So I went to Programs and Features in order to do so and to my surprise the Uninstall button was missing from the interface. Right-clicking an item and selecting uninstall from the menu gives a warning message suggesting that the application might have already been uninstalled and asks if I wanted to remove the application from the Programs list. However, clicking OK or Cancel just closes the message box and nothing happens.

So I went and tried to Refresh My PC; Once I clicked Refresh My PC the verification process started and indeed it told my that some system files are missing and that it should take care of it provided I insert my Windows disc. Now since its an OTA update from Win 8 to 8.1 I thought that MS knows that some people will not have a physical copy of 8.1 and so I inserted my Windows 8 Pro System Builder disc hoping it would work, but sadly as you might have guessed, it did not. It told me that I needed the 8.1 recovery disc.

Now I have been looking everywhere for a recovery image to download and use to fix my problem, everywhere I go it suggests that I make my own copy. But how am I supposed to do that if my Windows is faulty and has missing files. I really don't wanna go back to Windows 8 and re-upgrade to 8.1. I have a monitored internet bandwidth and I cannot go and download the 3 GB 8.1 update once more.

How can I repair my 8.1 machine?

I came across this article describing how to get an ISO image for 8.1 with a Windows 8 product Key. However, entering my Windows 8 Pro System Builder (OEM) key in the box fails and tells me that the key I entered is not for this product.

System Recovery Not Working On Samsung Laptop

Aug 11, 2014

I have a client's laptop which is a Samsung Model NP350V5C-A01us and I am trying to recovery the OS or more than likely do a clean install.

Customer reloaded BIOS to factory default prior to bringing it to me. Client even tried the recovery disk that came with the laptop.

This is what both the client and I are getting: see attached image.

All the options that show in the image when pressed leads back to the same Recovery screen.

I cannot get the DVD to boot from but the Disk is running. So not sure if the laser is of the DVD is not working.

Maintenance :: Recovery Disk And System Image

Oct 23, 2013

I am trying to get a handle on how these 2 functions are related. I assume the Recovery disk would be needed if you can't boot to the computer (assume the OS needs to be present) and does the Recovery disk replace the boot files that may be damaged and then after you get booted up I assume the System Image (is that is referred to as a "backup")?? would be ran to get the computer back to the working order when the Image was taken. Assume that the Recovery disk would take place of the OS installation disk if it were not available and you couldn't just reinstall the OS and so you could load the Image.

Major System Corruption / USB Recovery Not Working

Sep 15, 2014

My desk top was working when I turned it off yesterday, i turned it back on this morning to discover it got stuck on the start menu screen, so I turned it off and turned it back on (it apparently was having this issue a few days ago when a friend was using it, he reset it several times). When it turned back on and I logged in, the screen kept flickering between the desk top and what i assume is the start menu. It won't even load the desktop/start bar icons.

I've tried booting in safe mode and the same problem but it gave me an error message,I/O unexpected error 0xc00000e9. so i decided to boot from a recovery USB, and now its telling me that the media isn't valid. I don't want to wipe it as it has valuable documents on it.

tldr, I broke 8.1 and my recovery isn't working.

I have another windows 8.1 machine that I used to create the recovery USB.

Create System Recovery Disk In Windows 8?

Dec 31, 2012

I decided that I should, create a System Recovery DVD for my new computer. However when I try and do it I only get the option to create a recovery USB Drive.

I did that but I'd still like to make a DVD disk.

Ps. I see that my system recovery USB drive has an empty folder called Sources. If I was to place a backup of my C: drive in that folder would it be automatically accessible and usable from the DVD drive?

Hmmm, I can't seem to find a way to use Windows to create a backup of my C: drive either.

Create Windows 8 USB From Recovery Partition Files

Jul 1, 2013

I finally broke down and bought a modern laptop Asus A55A (K55A) and installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a dual boot situation. With the nefarious secureboot and other such nonsense Windows 8 install met with an untimely demise. However, I have the files left on the recovery partition (copied to my 16gb usb) and need to make an install disk. My only issue is that I can't find a way to do it in Ubuntu as all the tutorials I find assume that Windows is installed. Is there a way to make a bootable Windows 8 install usb or iso from the files on the recovery partition-without using Windows to make it? I would love to re-install Windows 8 and then setup a stale dual boot.

Win 8.1 Recovery Error - Some Media Files Are Missing

Dec 23, 2013

I'm trying to do a complete recovery of my Windows 8.1 laptop (The "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" option). A few seconds after I try to initiate the recovery, I am stopped by a message that says:

"Some Media Files are Missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files"

After this message appears I am prompted to cancel the restoration. How can I bypass this message to continue with the recovery? My laptop is 4 years old and is ready for a recovery.

My laptop was purchased running Windows 7 64bit, from which I upgraded to Win 8 64bit Pro through a free download from my school. I have my Windows 8 installation key, but not the download files. I upgraded to 8.1 through the Windows Store free download.

I tried copying the backup to a drive on my network, but recovery won't see that either, even when entering the exact path to the backup using the network option. I then tried to copy the backup to a second hard drive, installing that hard drive directly into the machine. no go, wouldn't even recognize the drive.

Maintenance :: System Image Recovery Password Incorrect?

Oct 31, 2013

I'm running Windows 8.0 Pro 64bit in UEFI mode & I have successfully taken a Windows System Image of my PC in preparation for upgrading to Windows 8.1.

So now I'm testing that I can actually restore my system, so I go to:

PC Settings -> General -> Advanced Startup -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> System Image Recovery

On the next screen I select my PC Account name (the only account listed) and then enter my password. However, I always get "Password Incorrect. Please try again".

I am 100% certain that I am entering the correct password.

I can restart the PC and login to windows using the same Account & password without any problems. In User Accounts there is only 1 User Account listed which has administrator rights. Nor have I tried to change the password since the System Image was taken.

Tablets :: Dell Latitude 10 Essentials - Cannot Use System Recovery

Jul 24, 2013

I've got this Dell tablet and it's touch screen has gone kaput. It works sometimes, it doesn't most of the times. It has gotten worse in the last few days. It only used to do that when resuming from Standby previously.

There is nothing I can do about it from my end. I have contacts Dell support and it seems they will take it back for repairs.

In the meantime, my recovery partition seems to be not working either. I first wanted to factory reset it to see if it is a software issue. (Easier to RMA as well) Dell has their own recovery software called Dell Backup and Recovery and it doesn't work. It would reboot back to Windows 8's recovery environment (F8) and wait there. I have used Recovery once and maybe it screwed up everything. I don't know.

I tried Windows Refresh and Recovery features and they don't work either. Refresh asks me to insert the media .

Recovery tells me that i cannot find a recovery image in my drive.

I have used Refresh many times when the touch screen problem originally appeared, and then it didn't ask for the install media. Seems that it was using the recovery image that was originally in the drive.

Now the recovery image is either missing or inaccessible by any sort of recovery. I tried creating a Recovery media using the Dell Backup and Recovery software and it also stops saying that an error has occurred. How informative.

This is the current state of Disk Management screen. Why are there so many partitions? The right click menu only pops up for C: partition. It's empty for other partitions.

BTW, I have Windows 8.1 Preview installed as well. I have used Refresh few times after that as well. I don't think it has anything to do with the issue. But it would be great if I can reset it back to factory image before sending for RMA.

Windows 8 System - Move Recovery Partition To USB Drive

Oct 10, 2013

I wish to purchase a new laptop that has Windows 8 OEM pre-installed on a 256GB SSD and a recovery partition. I would like to move the recovery partition to an USB drive using the feature available in Windows 8 and create another partition on the SSD for a different OS (linux). I have several questions:

1. Is there any difference between a recovery USB and the recovery partition on the SSD?

2. [Answered] If I completely wipe the original Windows 8 installation can I restore my system using the USB drive?

3. [Answered] During recovery, can I chose on what partition I want to install Windows 8 or create a new partition for it (similarly to a fresh install) or is the whole thing done automatically? I want to know if the recovery process wipes the whole SSD or only the Windows partition and if my other partitions will be left intact (I can live with it overriding the bootloader).

4. If I shrink the Windows 8 partition, can I still perform the recovery? (assuming that I have enough space for the installation).

Unable To Move Folder (Containing Files)?

Dec 17, 2012

This has happened a few times to me. I work a lot with professional Audio Production and I just tried to move some files that were created last year on the same PC (using windows 7 64-bit at the time) from one folder to another on the same partition. I used the 'take ownership' context item and even added my user name (only user on my PC) with all permissions. But I still couldn't move them (not one application or folder open that was using the files inside).

In the end I had to copy/paste and delete the originals afterwards. They deleted fine, but wouldn't allow moving. How to avoid this in future, so that I can just move the files?

It's happened to a few (seemingly) random folders since I've started using windows 8 64-bit, amongst hundreds I have in the parent folder from the same dates +/-.

Move Documents Folder On Mixed SSD / HDD System?

Jun 19, 2014

I have a laptop with an SSD and a "normal" rotating hard drive. The SSD is small (32Gb) so I want to reserve it for things that best belong on it, using the bigger (650Gb) HDD for the bulk of my storage needs.

I assumed it would be easy to move the Users folder but no, it can't, so after much faffing around I managed to move the folders individually using the Properties/Location tab, all of them that is except the Documents folder which for some reason doesn't offer the Location tab on its Properties.

This concerns me because the Documents folder is likely to grow the fastest (most of my work is text) so I really do want to get it off the SSD onto the HDD.

As a subsidiary question - if that's allowed? - if I create another user can I tell Windows to put its folders on the HDD right from the start? As there's nothing in the Users folder yet that might be a way round this problem?
