Cannot Write To User Folder After Recovery
Mar 21, 2013
I just recovered my windows system partition from an Acronis backup. Everything works fine except for anything that needs to write to Appdata. Cannot download, cannot run Dropbox, or create new user profile at logon. I have tried "Take Ownership", have set my user as owner via security settings, have given my user full control, but nothing works.

I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

I am attempting to relocate the Users folder from C:/ to D:/ (these are physically distinct internal 1 TB drives) as par of a new clean install of Windows 8 on a new laptop.
I am following the tutorial here: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk
The problem I face is at the stage of creating an answer file for the Sysprep tool.
Windows 8 is preinstalled and there is no separate installation media - rather it boots/reinstalls off a petition on the C:/ drive. Hnce I cannot run the unattend file command line:
<cpifflineImage cpi:source="wim:F:/sources/install.wim#Windows 8" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
Where F: would be a CD drive or USB drive.
I have tried creating recovery media on a USB stick using the HP utility, but while this works there appears to be no directory structure or file comparable to that listed above. Indeed there seems to be no install.wim file anywhere.
As I am told pre-installs are very common on Win 8 laptops (mine is an HP Envy17-j005tx), I assume there is an alternative approach but I can't find it.....
As to why I want to move the Users folder - I have XP set up like this on my old desktop and it makes for a far saner directory structure, easier backup and if one needs to reinstall Windows, it makes for a much cleaner simpler process as User information is preserved on a separate disk. Also one is much less likely to run out of disk space!!

I recently got my laptop's hard drive replaced by OEM under warranty. I soon realized my user account was at C:UsersAcer. I want to change the name of my user folder to C:UsersNick. I'm wondering what is the best way to go about doing this. I followed the tutorial on renaming user accounts and it worked except that my user folder is still C:UsersAcer. I thought about making a new user account with the proper name and copying whatever I needed over to the new account but I don't think thats going to turn out too well (programs looking for a C:UsersAcer folder that no longer exists)....

I have preinstalled Win 8 on new desktop, now upgraded to 8.1. When I first started setting it up and it required an account login, I didn't really realize that it was going to exist outside my computer. I used my full name and primary email account for it. Then, it set up a folder(s) under Users (using my name), in the file structure. When I copied over say "Documents" from my Win 7 machine, they now show in a path of: This PC / Windows / Users / (myname) / Documents. I will not be using "the cloud" for anything, and want to only have a local account with Admin Privileges and a local account for using 99% of the time. Hence a multi-part question:
1) If I make a change to my MS password, like setting it up with a non-identifying username/password with a Hotmail email (which I never use), how will it affect my docs/pics/music/etc that is under Users / myname? If I change the MS login to a LOCAL login, what effect would it have instead?
2) Is there a way to get (myname) out of the file structure and rename it something neutral, or will that bring chaos?
3) And, as long as I'm asking things...I created the new Admin-Account and Daily-Account, but it seems like neither of them can access anything. They just get "permission denied" - even on the Admin one. I set up a Hotmail account for them both, so they have MS logins as well. Can I just switch them to LOCAL logins as well?

The Windows 8 starts it seems that i loose the permissions to the temp folder. As a result some applications using that folder to launch (for example Google drive) fail giving me an error. Another example are some installation files not starting because the temp folder cannot be used.
So, i have always to go to temp folder and manually set the permissions to have all working.

Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).
To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).
Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?
Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...

So I had this recovery error that said my winload.efi was missing so I ran the recovery from boot up and decided to recover. I read that this will delete the files from C: so I turned on the "Maintain User Data" option and selected all including the local disk c from advanced selection. But when the process was finished, my laptop was empty and no data was restored. What happened ? did I just misunderstand how it works and now it's gone ? or is it just somewhere I can't find ?

Windows 8.1
Started a new account, with admin privileges. Deleted old account also with admin privileges. Selected the "KEEP FILES" option. Deleted account. A folder pops up in desktop, with the computer's name. Under that folder there was another folder with old user name, and under that folder there was yet another folder also with old user name. Completely empty.
Desktop>[COMPUTERNAME][USERNAME][USERNAME]Empty
I don't have a restore point to which to retrieve my files. The c: disk says there is 600GBs of free space, previously I had only 300. All the library from my old user account have been wiped. I also checked Recycle Bin which is empty. The current account has admin privileges and is set to show hidden files. I was told that it might be under c:Users. I checked that with CMD and two folders were titled "." and "..", they don't show under file explorer.
I am running Recuva right now, but from what I understand that won't be able to restore file names and fragmented files, which are both critical. I also had an encrypted file with a none standard extension which might be ignored by Recuva.

I have a bit of a problem here. I wanted to clone a 2tb sata disk from a karaoke machine, and when I inserted it into my NL54 HP server running windows 8 to perform the clone (to a new 2tb drive), the clone was successful. However, upon inserting the new disk in the karaoke machine, it just caused the karaoke machine to hang. Similarly inserting the original disk caused the same issue.
My question is, if Windows 8 alters or writes to (in any way) a new hard disk installed for the first time? I don't know the exact details of how the disk was previously formatted, however when I did install it in my HP server it auto showed up as a drive and files/folders were accessible - hence I assume it was NTFS.
What I really wanted to do was to do a clone whilst keeping the original write protected, however I don't think there was any pins on the sata disk to protect against this, so my options were limited anyway.

I have two Windows 8 UltraBooks: a Sony Vaio SVT13126CXS, and a Samsung NP540U3C-A01UB. Both were setup fairly simply in December 2012, except that they both had the Intel/McAfee anti-theft software installed then. My kids use them for school work and typically put them to sleep when not in use. To our great frustration, they have found since about June 2013 that they are unable to write files anywhere on the hard drive when they get to school (they can write to a FAT32 USB stick). I suspect this is due to some Windows Update, but I don't know which one.
To fix this, I first tried explicitly giving the standard users ownership and full control of the My Documents tree, but that didn't work. Then I tried turning the UAC prompts down or off, but that didn't work (no UAC prompt/screen dimming/beep ever appears, anyway). Next I tried deleting their user accounts and files and re-creating their accounts as members of the Administrators Group, but even that didn't work. For instance, when they try to save a new MS Word document, a message box pops up saying something like "you need to ask an Administrator for permission" - which is bizarre, since they are Administrators! Trying to save on the Desktop or C: does not work either. I tried switching from sleep to hibernation, but that didn't work.
It finally occurred to me that the users were apparently losing part of their account privileges when the PCs were resuming from sleep. So I activated the password lock screen and sure enough that fixed the problem! Now when the PCs awake from sleep the users can enter their password to unlock the screen and then write and delete files at will. This is one of the most bizarre problems I have ever seen with Windows. I am posting it here for two reasons: underlying Windows 8 problem in this non-Pro version? So workaround (enable the password lock screen upon resume)

Whenever I open new programs, my hard drive jumps up to 100% usage. The problem is my read/write speed looks like it's capped around 10 MB/s. The manufacture says I should get an average of 156 MB/s.
I have a 6 month old Dell XPS 8500 (i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB-7200 rpm hard drive). I consistently take care of it (defrag, clean sweep, virus/malware protection). See the dropbox link or PDF attached for examples of my issue.

My usb is apparently disk write protected. there is no physical switch on the usb. i can't understand it as it was working perfectly one day & the next it was write protected, it maybe to do with the fact that i formatted with 'wii backup manager' allowing me to put downloaded wii games onto the usb & play it on the wii, but i can't remember if i done this or not.
I googled the question and someone said to run cmd, diskpart, list disk, select disk X, attribute disk clear readonly, clean. it goes on for a few more steps but at this point i get the error message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O Device error. See the system event log for more information"
What can i do. the usb is only around a year old so shouldnt be damaged already.

Something terrible happened to my computer today. I'm honestly not sure exactly how, but my hard drive locked itself. I was trying to install FL Studio 11, when it kept saying I didn't have write permissions. I thought that the installer might be corrupted, so I downloaded it again. It still had the same issue. I thought maybe it was an issue with Windows 8, so I burned it to a USB and connected my iPhone to iTunes to try and sync some music to it before I restored Windows. Not only did the driver not install, but iTunes closed and said I either don't have read/write permissions or iTunes is on a locked hard drive. Frustrated at this point, I turned my computer off and booted from my Windows 8 install USB.
Windows 8 will not install because it says that my hard drive is locked so I can't install Windows 8 on the hard drive. I tried installing it again and the installer said that the temporary installation files could not be copied to the hard drive. I can't boot into Windows now, it just stays stuck at the flashing symbol (I've left it there for about 5 hours now, still nothing). I have a lot of files that I really need for making my music and a lot of unrecoverable pictures, so I really need to get this computer fixed.
At the moment I'm installing Windows on a USB in hopes I can boot from that and move all my files to a backup PC and then format my hard drive, but I'm not 100% sure that will work. I checked my BIOS and my hard drive is not locked with a password or anything, so this just doesn't make sense to me. It might have something to do with all the partitions I've made in the last few days to install Linux and I decided I didn't need it so I deleted the partitions and extended my main partition again.
Also, I've already tried automatic repair about 6 times nothing has worked, it says it can't fix my PC. I fixed this problem by downloading Hiren's Boot CD, going into Mini XP, moving all my files to another laptop with USB, and formatting my hard drive completely.

I've a relatively new SanDisk Cruzer Slice 64GB USB pen drive, which I use for work mainly. It has somehow managed to write protect itself and no matter what I do I simply cannot remove it!
I've scanned with Antivirus, nothing found
I've tried regedit - ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM CurrentControlSetControlStorageDevicePolicies
StorageDevicePolices didn't exist so I created a 32 bit Dword string, set to 0 this hasn't done anything
I've tried Diskpart as administrator - DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 298 GB 1024 KB
Disk 1 Online 59 GB 0 B
DISKPART> select disk 1
Disk 1 is now the selected disk.
DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly
Disk attributes cleared successfully.
DISKPART> clean
DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See the System Event Log for more information. I've checked the logs and it doesn't seem to list anything for the drive
