Hardware Drivers :: USB Flash Drive Disk Write
Mar 21, 2014
My usb is apparently disk write protected. there is no physical switch on the usb. i can't understand it as it was working perfectly one day & the next it was write protected, it maybe to do with the fact that i formatted with 'wii backup manager' allowing me to put downloaded wii games onto the usb & play it on the wii, but i can't remember if i done this or not.
I googled the question and someone said to run cmd, diskpart, list disk, select disk X, attribute disk clear readonly, clean. it goes on for a few more steps but at this point i get the error message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O Device error. See the system event log for more information"
What can i do. the usb is only around a year old so shouldnt be damaged already.

When I try to format my flash drive it shows that the drive is Write-Protected. When I tried to remove it through diskpart it said it completed successfully, but when I try to format it again it still didn't work. I also tried removing it using REGEDIT with storage device policies, but that STILL didn't work.

I have an 8GB flash drive that's write protected. There is no lock/unlock on the flash drive. How can I reformat/erase the contents so I can use the flash drive for other things? I've tried low level and that didn't work.

I've a relatively new SanDisk Cruzer Slice 64GB USB pen drive, which I use for work mainly. It has somehow managed to write protect itself and no matter what I do I simply cannot remove it!
I've scanned with Antivirus, nothing found
I've tried regedit - ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM CurrentControlSetControlStorageDevicePolicies
StorageDevicePolices didn't exist so I created a 32 bit Dword string, set to 0 this hasn't done anything
I've tried Diskpart as administrator - DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 298 GB 1024 KB
Disk 1 Online 59 GB 0 B
DISKPART> select disk 1
Disk 1 is now the selected disk.
DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly
Disk attributes cleared successfully.
DISKPART> clean
DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See the System Event Log for more information. I've checked the logs and it doesn't seem to list anything for the drive

I have Silicon Power Blaze B20 flash drive, which is not recognized by my desktop PC's both USB 3.0 ports. The flash drive's light blinks when pugged in, but no reaction from PC's side. I have tried to plug cord between flash drive and PC, but no change. It does recognize the device when plugged in any other USB 2.0 port. And the device is being recognized by other computer's both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, so I assume it is PC's fault, but what it is. My PC's USB 3.0 ports do recognize any other USB 3.0 devices - my external HDD, other USB 3.0 devices but this drive.

The issue is finding the file location for my flash drive. My computer only has 3 external USB ports. I have tried all of them, when the flash drive is plugged in somewhere on my computer it should indicate another drive location. I can't find anything....not sure where to look or if I'm looking in the right place. All that shows is c: drive & E: drive. The E: drive is exclusive for the OS system restore (can't be used; not accessible for anything else). The only other is the DVD drive. Nowhere can I find evidence of the flash drive plugged into the USB.
I have all the essential drivers & everything is up to date [I have a task scheduler & Driver updater software installed. All drivers are up to date. This is a new computer, only 2 months old].
I have gone into device manager & checked all the USB & composite serial bus controllers to make sure they are powered on (my computer has an energy saving management thing & it will possibly deactivate the hubs when not in use). According to the power management settings they are not set to "sleep" but all ports are active. I can't figure out why I can't find my drive, nothing is appearing when I have the flash drive plugged in.

Yet another lovely problem with 8.1. When I plug in my drive, it shows up in with all of my other drives, and when I double click it to open it, the explorer window freezes, and doesn't unfreeze until I unplug the flash drive. I don't know what went wrong. Maybe it is a driver issue? I am positive that the drive is fine, because it works on my laptop, and even works on this computer in a linux virtual machine.

It is a 64 GB Toshiba USB drive (TNU). Problem is that every time I try to format to NTFS the normal way with Windows 7 or Windows 8 I get the message: Windows was unable to complete the format.
I tried to format it using the specific software from the drive manufacturer, TNA.
A friend managed to format it to FAT32, but the next time I tried to access the drive Windows showed a message saying that I needed to format the drive to use it. Then there appeared only the exFAT option.
I also tried some partition software, like AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition, and it could format to both FAT32 and NTFS, but when I removed and put the USB drive back Windows again warned me about the need to format and again I had only the exFAT option left.

My mother-in-law has purchased a HP laptop with windows 8 which has since updated to 8.1 (and we think update 1 - there is nothing to say update 1 on it, but it does have a power icon on the tiles screen).
When a DVD (data or film) is inserted, the drive spins up - but not to full speed - and the icon in My Computer doesn't change to show the drive is no longer empty (or changed from a previous disc).
At one point, after installing a Canon printer, I switched out the install DVD for a film. As per usual, the icon did not update. I refreshed with [F5] but nothing changed. When I double clicked the drive icon, it opened up but showed the files from the install DVD and not the Film that was in the drive.
It even went as far as to open up on of the smaller files off the DVD that was no longer in the drive. As though it had cached it for some reason. It was only when I retried to run the setup executable did it poll the drive and find out there was a new disc in there and finally allowed us to watch the Film.
The film in this case was Life of Pi - we also tried Skyfall - both of which are off-the-shelf commercial DVD's and not home-brew DVD films.
Is there any setting that can be changed? I have changed the autoplay settings to ask everytime for everything but that had no effect.

Whenever I open new programs, my hard drive jumps up to 100% usage. The problem is my read/write speed looks like it's capped around 10 MB/s. The manufacture says I should get an average of 156 MB/s.
I have a 6 month old Dell XPS 8500 (i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB-7200 rpm hard drive). I consistently take care of it (defrag, clean sweep, virus/malware protection). See the dropbox link or PDF attached for examples of my issue.

Something terrible happened to my computer today. I'm honestly not sure exactly how, but my hard drive locked itself. I was trying to install FL Studio 11, when it kept saying I didn't have write permissions. I thought that the installer might be corrupted, so I downloaded it again. It still had the same issue. I thought maybe it was an issue with Windows 8, so I burned it to a USB and connected my iPhone to iTunes to try and sync some music to it before I restored Windows. Not only did the driver not install, but iTunes closed and said I either don't have read/write permissions or iTunes is on a locked hard drive. Frustrated at this point, I turned my computer off and booted from my Windows 8 install USB.
Windows 8 will not install because it says that my hard drive is locked so I can't install Windows 8 on the hard drive. I tried installing it again and the installer said that the temporary installation files could not be copied to the hard drive. I can't boot into Windows now, it just stays stuck at the flashing symbol (I've left it there for about 5 hours now, still nothing). I have a lot of files that I really need for making my music and a lot of unrecoverable pictures, so I really need to get this computer fixed.
At the moment I'm installing Windows on a USB in hopes I can boot from that and move all my files to a backup PC and then format my hard drive, but I'm not 100% sure that will work. I checked my BIOS and my hard drive is not locked with a password or anything, so this just doesn't make sense to me. It might have something to do with all the partitions I've made in the last few days to install Linux and I decided I didn't need it so I deleted the partitions and extended my main partition again.
Also, I've already tried automatic repair about 6 times nothing has worked, it says it can't fix my PC. I fixed this problem by downloading Hiren's Boot CD, going into Mini XP, moving all my files to another laptop with USB, and formatting my hard drive completely.

The drive in question appears in attached screen shots as Disk 6 but is missing from Explorer.

Over the last couple days, I built a new PC and installed windows 8.1. Initially I had some issues installing windows, so I unplugged all my drives except the SSD and DVD. I installed windows to my SSD.
Everything works great!
Now I started adding my drives back in 1 at a time. When I plugged my 2nd SSD in, it showed up in BIOS, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. So I booted back into the install CD, it showed up in the disk manager there. Since this was also a blank SSD, I partitioned and formated the drive from the install CD, then exited the installer and booted back to my windows drive.
I have 2 SSD drives working great!
Now to add my 2TB HDD... Same issue, it shows up in BIOS and the install disc, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. This drive does not have a boot partition on it, however, it does have two existing data partitions. They were made from my previous windows 7 system and the option to delete these partitions is grayed out in the install disc menu. I also have some data that I would like to keep on it. I have a USB dock that I can use to read the contents of the disk just fine. Everything is there and in working order.
What is different about Windows 8.1 that is preventing my hard drives from showing up in windows proper? I am reading things about UEFI online, but nothing seems to fit my exact scenario. I will try and post some screen shots when I get back at it.
System:
Mobo- Asrock Fatal1ty Killer z87
CPU- i3 4330
GPU- Gigabyte 660 OC
SSDs - Kingston V300 120GB
Windows 8.1 64bit

I'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything. However, when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash drive.
I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive. That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix.
So, I purchased a cheap 8 GB stick (no brand) and Windows (I'm running 8.1 x64) recognizes it as a removable disk. However, the create a backup utility still won't recognize it. I've found some random fixes that have worked for some (such as plugging it into a different USB port) but nothing has worked for me so far. I've tried doing it with the "copy the recovery partition" option both checked and unchecked.
If there's no solution to this wonderful "quirk" of Windows, then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS? Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there...
EDIT So as of right now, I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition. That didn't work either. However..when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the "copy the partition" thing

It started yesterday. When I got a Flash disk from my friend the computer displayed blue screen when I inserted it into a USB port. After the reboot the situation reoccured but then without the presence of the USB.
Later it happened when I used my own Flash disk. And yet another time when I wasn't doing anything at all, just browsing the internet with Firefox.
I tried inserting the USB a few times later, but it worked. I've run memtest around 10 times and there were no errors. I also tried IntelBurnTest and it completed successfully.

I got this new Asus Transformer which is a Windows 8.1 system.
I made a few images with Macrium Reflect and created an UEFI recovery Flash Drive (with Macrium) for the Macrium recovery program. I can set the BIOS to boot from the stick (in the temporary or permanent BIOS settings). Problem is, when I hit Enter, it ignores the stick and boots directly into 8.1.
Is there another setting in the BIOS that I have to make in order to have it boot from the stick.
