So I want to move my User folder called james_000 from my Windows (C) drive into my Local Disk (D) drive. Is there any easy and fast way to do this? I'm running out of space in my Windows (C) drive and this one folder holds 60 gigabits of data.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe Windows 8 starts it seems that i loose the permissions to the temp folder. As a result some applications using that folder to launch (for example Google drive) fail giving me an error. Another example are some installation files not starting because the temp folder cannot be used.
So, i have always to go to temp folder and manually set the permissions to have all working.
Either with my startup today, or sometime in the last day or two, all my drives/partitions in Windows Explorer (and XYplorer) have lost their labels and are now showing as "Local Disk." Looking in Windows 8 Computer Management and EaseUs Partition Manager, the labels are there, as shown in the screenshot. I ran all three main repair modules of Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and there have been a few reboots, but still the same.

One folder I can't access is my user folder. I get the message 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder.' I took ownership of the folder but that didn't work. I get a similar result for the folder "C:WindowsCSC" if you want to see how my user folder behaves.
How can I access my user folder on my mounted image?
My buddy wants me to relocate his Documents and Pictures folders (by going to Properties/Location tab/Move on those folders) so that they would be in his Google Drive folder, and thereby backed up automatically to the cloud.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.
I built a new PC to be used primarily for gaming purposes, so I installed Windows 8 Pro onto 128GB SSD. I wanted to move my User profile to my HDD, and followed the directions posted here: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk
After doing this and exiting Audit mode, Windows acted as if I had were installing the OS and wanted a product key. I skipped this step, went through the configuration, but when I used my email for my Windows account, it says that a user is already using that account on my PC. Obviously, because I had been using my computer earlier today. So since it knows there is a user with that account, why can't I access it when I start my computer? A friend of mine says I may have installed Windows twice on accident, but he isn't sure.
I've had this issue with chrome where, I'll close it and reopen later to find the error "Chrome didn't shut down correctly, click Restore". I'm trying to delete the local google folder on my computer(then reinstalling) in the program files(x86) and It will not let me. Saying "Folder access Denied" I require permission, even though I'm the administrator. I came across this site:Take Ownership Of Files And Folders In Windows 8 where they offered a way to add a "Take ownership" option to my menu options and included a uninstall reg file.
I already saw a similar thread on this site : Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8 but did not download from it b/c I did not know how to remove the reg file. I tried the take ownership from the first site and it didnt work, I used the uninstall reg file and now i'm frustrated and back to square one.
I can't even reinstall chrome at all b/c of some unspecified error, I just want to be able to delete the google folder on my computer to do a clean install.

Here is what I wanted to do: right click in File Explorer on a local disk, so I can share it, so I can access that drive from my laptop. Attached a picture, I want to share "Local Disk (E:)", underlined with red, with my mad paint skills. You can see a snippet from my task bar as well, it is important.
Here is the problem: after right clicking, the OS seems to think about 1-2 seconds, then it closes the File Explorer, then kills my task bar, every icon disappears for a few seconds, then everything loads back, tho File Explorer won't open again automatically. Back in Windows7 and XP etc. days this was typically something like an "explorer.exe" crash. Attached another picture, how my taskbar looks exactly, at the moment of restarting. Note: the taskbar flashes before reappearing - still without icons - with dark blue color for a brief moment, then it loads my icons, as I mentioned above. Dark blue is the color of my "Start screen", or however it is officialy called, not sure. The pic:
Also, you can see at the right side, the clock does not show as well.
My setup is like this: I have a 500GB hard drive: C: is the system partition, D: is the data partition. E: is a completely separate 320GB hard drive, another data partition. I have a fully legal Windows 8 Professional, with updates installed(perfectly up to date, I just did an update check, everything is installed) provided by MSDNAA (or Dreamspark nowadays, if I am right) for university students. Every hardware works good, so something went wrong with Windows 8. I am not completly sure, but I think I could right click the drives a while ago, it started just now. Also, I can right click everything else without error, just not the disks. I don't want to roll back to Windows7, since I really like 8, but if this won't get sorted out, I may have to.
Here is what I did: It was obvious that something 3rd party context menu extension (shell extension) caused the problem. I did try to disable extensions 1 by 1, to see if it solves it. Finally, disabling "NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension" solved my problem.
It looks like this PC can't run Windows 8.1. This might be because the Users or Program Files folder is being redirected to another partition."
By using the Customize feature of Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, I created a MIG transfer file, without selecting the user folders (such as Documents, Pictures or Video).
If the MIG file is copied to the C: drive, will the User Profile be created on the C: drive, when Easy Transfer is run?
I am guessing that the default User Folders will be created on the C drive, and then the locations can be changed to match the present physical location on my other partitions.
When I go into Properties/Location of the Public Videos folder it says I can "change where the files are stored in this folder" however I cannot type a new location into the dialogue box. I am in signed in as administrator.

I began setting up my new computer with two accounts---local and Microsoft. Now I see it's a hassle and I'd like to get rid of the local one, but I can't find a way to do it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.
I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?
I have the basic "Windows 8".
Using a free addon, I have a WinXP start menu and task bar.
In old XP, "My Documents" is easy to open - it's immediately under the "Desktop" folder.
In Windows 8, there are two My Documents:
First is DesktopLibrariesDocumentsMy Documents
Second is Desktop<my name>My Documents
In both of these cases, I seem to do three times as much mouse clicking in order to find a doc, compared with the old XP.
Is there any way I can move My Documents higher up the folder structure, immediately under Desktop?
This has happened a few times to me. I work a lot with professional Audio Production and I just tried to move some files that were created last year on the same PC (using windows 7 64-bit at the time) from one folder to another on the same partition. I used the 'take ownership' context item and even added my user name (only user on my PC) with all permissions. But I still couldn't move them (not one application or folder open that was using the files inside).
In the end I had to copy/paste and delete the originals afterwards. They deleted fine, but wouldn't allow moving. How to avoid this in future, so that I can just move the files?
It's happened to a few (seemingly) random folders since I've started using windows 8 64-bit, amongst hundreds I have in the parent folder from the same dates +/-.
Its been 2 hours since this problem occured. i started my laptop and saw that some icons were white, when i clicked on the icon it says "The drive or network connection that the shortcut Counter-Strike.lnk refers to is unavailable.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with an SSD and a "normal" rotating hard drive. The SSD is small (32Gb) so I want to reserve it for things that best belong on it, using the bigger (650Gb) HDD for the bulk of my storage needs.
I assumed it would be easy to move the Users folder but no, it can't, so after much faffing around I managed to move the folders individually using the Properties/Location tab, all of them that is except the Documents folder which for some reason doesn't offer the Location tab on its Properties.
This concerns me because the Documents folder is likely to grow the fastest (most of my work is text) so I really do want to get it off the SSD onto the HDD.
As a subsidiary question - if that's allowed? - if I create another user can I tell Windows to put its folders on the HDD right from the start? As there's nothing in the Users folder yet that might be a way round this problem?
I want to automate one process that I do from time to time. I have many folders, sometimes like 90 folders and I want to move them all into a single folder, the filenames are the same so they overwrite. I can overwrite them, in fact, I should, I just want to move all files from many folders into one folder, not doing it manually. Is there a command in CMD that can do that? E.g I have FolderSubfolder 1... Subfolder 90 so in 1 folder I have the subfolders then I have RootFolder where I want all to be and overwritten, MOVED not copied
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to clean up my 8.1 system and encountered a folder that it won't allow me to delete or move. It is in C:users[me]appdatalocal emp and is named rarsfx4. It appears to have been used by my AV pgm., Bitdefender, at install time. When I attempt to delete it, it asks me if I want to move it to the recycle bin. I click Yes. Then it says I need to provide administrator permission to delete it. I click Continue. Then a little window pops up and quickly disappears that says '234 items recycled.' Then another window appears that says 'You require permission from xxxme to make changes to this folder' and gives me only the option to try again, which just repeats this last process. xxx is my PC name, and xxxme is my user profile name, not any user account name that shows up in Control Panel, User Accounts. (I have only one user account, which is a network one, my gmail ID.) When I check Properties, Security, for the folder, I see that System, my network user account (which is an administrator), and Administrators (xxxAdministrators) all have full control. When I click on Advanced under Security above, the owner is displayed as Administrators (xxxAdministrators).
I also tried deleting the folder using Command Prompt, Run as administrator, but get 'access denied' for every file.
My questions are what is going on here, and what can I do to remedy it?
Two days ago I received quite a strong new Win 8.1 computer (with SATA drive). I have opted for a LOCAL user only without a password.
The boot process was extremely fast: the computer turns-on to the blue log-in screen in few seconds; and then pressing Enter the signing-in process was almost immediate.
Then, a bad thing happened: I was lured by Microsoft to sign-in with a Microsoft account. Then, signing-in to my computer with this MS account (and password) took ages; I mean, something like a full one minute the computer was trying to sign-in until eventually succeeding.
Understanding my mistake (why would I want an MS account?) I decided to disconnect from my Microsoft account, and return back to my nice local user.
But now, the long waiting time to signing-in (even without a password, and with an automatic log-in) still remains: I wait like 25 sec when the blue screen and the white dot circulate repeatedly until my account is signed-in.
I have new windows 8.1 installed with latest updates.
I have a C drive as my OS drive, and D drive for my documents.
My D drive (formatted as NTFS) has indexing switched on.
But, when I go into indexing options / modify / show all locations, my D drive is not displayed.
I just can't figure it out, this worked just fine under windows 7. I checked the drive authorities and I am the owner to the drive root+ all subfolders and have full authorisation to drive root + subfolders also.

This seems like a pretty glaring oversight now that MS is pushing to get rid of optical media. Things fail, often catastrophically (esp Windows).
I had been using my Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 with the factory installed Windows 8 Single Language version with a 1 TB Hard Drive. Its been over an year, i have been using it.
I used to install my programs in the C: Drive and separate my project related files, mp3s, etc in the D: drive so should their be any virus attack or anything unexpected, i could just format the C: Drive and have all my applications re-installed, which is no big deal for me.
Yesterday I had a very unexpected thing go down. My laptop started acting funny, it started restarted on its own over and over again and goes to the big blue screen notifiying me that the laptop had to be restarted.
Since i was under notion my D: Drive is safe, and the worse thing that could happen would a virus attack on the C: drive, i decided to refresh my PC because it was doing all sorts of weird stuff.
After refreshing my PC, I lost the entire D: drive.
Right now, my D: drive is my DVD drive. I can't figure out how to recover the other drive and its files. My Refreshing i had taken a backup as requested by the wizard but i couldnt view what all files are being taken as backup.
Looks like, it has only taken the backup of my C: Drive.
I wish to purchase a new laptop that has Windows 8 OEM pre-installed on a 256GB SSD and a recovery partition. I would like to move the recovery partition to an USB drive using the feature available in Windows 8 and create another partition on the SSD for a different OS (linux). I have several questions:
1. Is there any difference between a recovery USB and the recovery partition on the SSD?
2. [Answered] If I completely wipe the original Windows 8 installation can I restore my system using the USB drive?
3. [Answered] During recovery, can I chose on what partition I want to install Windows 8 or create a new partition for it (similarly to a fresh install) or is the whole thing done automatically? I want to know if the recovery process wipes the whole SSD or only the Windows partition and if my other partitions will be left intact (I can live with it overriding the bootloader).
4. If I shrink the Windows 8 partition, can I still perform the recovery? (assuming that I have enough space for the installation).
Right now I have 250GB HDD. I want to buy a 1TB HDD. But I dont want to reinstall everything.
I want to move whole OS from old hard drive to new hard drive. Is it possible? if possible, can you plz explain me how?

I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?
