I have a laptop with an SSD and a "normal" rotating hard drive. The SSD is small (32Gb) so I want to reserve it for things that best belong on it, using the bigger (650Gb) HDD for the bulk of my storage needs.
I assumed it would be easy to move the Users folder but no, it can't, so after much faffing around I managed to move the folders individually using the Properties/Location tab, all of them that is except the Documents folder which for some reason doesn't offer the Location tab on its Properties.
This concerns me because the Documents folder is likely to grow the fastest (most of my work is text) so I really do want to get it off the SSD onto the HDD.
As a subsidiary question - if that's allowed? - if I create another user can I tell Windows to put its folders on the HDD right from the start? As there's nothing in the Users folder yet that might be a way round this problem?
I was trying to clean up my 8.1 system and encountered a folder that it won't allow me to delete or move. It is in C:users[me]appdatalocal emp and is named rarsfx4. It appears to have been used by my AV pgm., Bitdefender, at install time. When I attempt to delete it, it asks me if I want to move it to the recycle bin. I click Yes. Then it says I need to provide administrator permission to delete it. I click Continue. Then a little window pops up and quickly disappears that says '234 items recycled.' Then another window appears that says 'You require permission from xxxme to make changes to this folder' and gives me only the option to try again, which just repeats this last process. xxx is my PC name, and xxxme is my user profile name, not any user account name that shows up in Control Panel, User Accounts. (I have only one user account, which is a network one, my gmail ID.) When I check Properties, Security, for the folder, I see that System, my network user account (which is an administrator), and Administrators (xxxAdministrators) all have full control. When I click on Advanced under Security above, the owner is displayed as Administrators (xxxAdministrators).
I also tried deleting the folder using Command Prompt, Run as administrator, but get 'access denied' for every file.
My questions are what is going on here, and what can I do to remedy it?
I have some files and shortcuts on my desktop, and I am trying to move them into my documents. When I refresh my documents they just disappear and they do not reappear in documents or the desktop. Only when I restart or log out do they reappear on the desktop. Whats causing this?
I've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.
I am trying to create a system image backup and I keep getting this error message
[COLOR=#FF0000]'Threre is not enough disk space to create the volum shadow copy on storage location. I am backing it up to a external HDD with over a tb of free space but I understand its not letting me perform the backup because the hidden 100mb hidden system partition is full...if i create a larger partition how can I copy that system partition to it? if that is possible....
I just attached my Micromax canvas smartphone to my windows 8 laptop to transfer some of my pics. I copied the pics and then looked for an appropriate folder in Documents to paste those pics. I found a folder named My Pics which already had some of my pics. I created a new folder inside it and then went back to my phone location. But to my surprise, when I came back there in My Pics I just found that folder empty!! (space 0 bytes)... What has just happened,I've lost my pics forever. I even tried System restore but in vain.
In setting up a new Acer Aspire V I have managed to rename the default Pictures folder Documents and I now have two folders called Documents - see below:
I was trying to move the Documents and Pictures folders to DropBox (because DropBox is encrypted) in order to have all contents synced. I believe the problem may have arisen because Windows 8.1 (I upgraded from installed Windows 8 immediately after buying the PC and before the install of Office 365) may have put the Documents folder in Skydrive folder by default.
To complicate matters Acer also has some form of cloud storage that may be in the mix -the clear.fi folder below? It is worth noting that the two folders below appear in both Documents folders (above) even although one still had the old Pictures icon - see above.
Here is a shot of the folders currently in the relevant user folder:
Is there any way to unscramble this mess and get the folders to DropBox?
I can't get into my Documents folder. Every time I go to get into it, this little pop up message come up.
It tells me:
" "Documents.library-ms" is no longer working. This library can be safely deleted from your computer. Folders that have been included will not be affected."
I have also include an image of the message.
It also happens when I try to get into my Pictures folder. Just lays "Pictures.library-ms" etc etc etc comes up.
After installing Windows 8 I moved "libraries/My documents" folder to another drive (I have SSD OS drive) but still c: space keeps going low.
I found a folder on my c: drive named by my PC name on the network, e.g. "MyPC" that has 10 GB size and includes the following file tree: MyPC/Documents and settings/Administrator/desktop,Favorites,My documents.
"My documents" seems identical to the Users/Myname/My documents that has been moved to a different drive.
I am the only user and have administrators permissions. It seems this Administrator's folder duplicates my documents somehow. (it's desktop folder is different from MYname Desktop folder). What should I do to clean the space - try to login as administrator and do something about this huge duplicate folder?
When I go into Properties/Location of the Public Videos folder it says I can "change where the files are stored in this folder" however I cannot type a new location into the dialogue box. I am in signed in as administrator.
This has happened a few times to me. I work a lot with professional Audio Production and I just tried to move some files that were created last year on the same PC (using windows 7 64-bit at the time) from one folder to another on the same partition. I used the 'take ownership' context item and even added my user name (only user on my PC) with all permissions. But I still couldn't move them (not one application or folder open that was using the files inside).
In the end I had to copy/paste and delete the originals afterwards. They deleted fine, but wouldn't allow moving. How to avoid this in future, so that I can just move the files?
It's happened to a few (seemingly) random folders since I've started using windows 8 64-bit, amongst hundreds I have in the parent folder from the same dates +/-.
I want to automate one process that I do from time to time. I have many folders, sometimes like 90 folders and I want to move them all into a single folder, the filenames are the same so they overwrite. I can overwrite them, in fact, I should, I just want to move all files from many folders into one folder, not doing it manually. Is there a command in CMD that can do that? E.g I have FolderSubfolder 1... Subfolder 90 so in 1 folder I have the subfolders then I have RootFolder where I want all to be and overwritten, MOVED not copied
So I want to move my User folder called james_000 from my Windows (C) drive into my Local Disk (D) drive. Is there any easy and fast way to do this? I'm running out of space in my Windows (C) drive and this one folder holds 60 gigabits of data.
big problem for everyone who uses an SSD for the sytem drive and used audit mode to relocate Users to another drive. Is there a GA iso available yet?n Or a way to burn an iso from what we've downloaded from the MS Store?
This seems like a pretty glaring oversight now that MS is pushing to get rid of optical media. Things fail, often catastrophically (esp Windows).
I was recently messing around with installing Windows 8 on an external USB 3.0 HDD (NOT a flash drive) (How To Install Windows 7 On USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive), and found website that showed a method for doing so by way of a "NT6 Fast Installer". I tried many times to get it to work and just when I was about to give up it finally succeeded. I rebooted into the external drive (unplugged my internal HDD) and it finished installing successfully. After booting/logging in for the first time I noticed that performance was near-native to what it would be if you ran it from an internal HDD. Games even ran well. But I noticed that there was only 1 partition and no System Reserved, and it appeared that the boot files were located on the C drive.
So my question is, on a regular 8 installation to an internal HDD, how can you delete System Reserved and move the boot files to the C drive? Is there any advantage in doing so (or disadvantages)? I just figured that with a C drive and a System Reserved that makes 2 primary partitions out of an available 4 being taken up, by having everthing on C you would only have 1 primary partition and 8 would still work. The steps listed at the above website are meant for 7 and Vista, but I tested them to the tee and they worked without modification on 8. I just had to flag the partition as active/bootable before booting into it for the first time, or else it would throw an error. I know alot of people think that it cant be done or is hard to do, but it can. But that's not what I'm trying to prove. It essentially amounts to being almost the same thing, if not exactly the same, as Windows To Go, except that you're installing via an unofficial method since the official installer wont allow installation to a USB HDD.
I installed windows 8.1 pro preview successfully in English, and since I use French very often, I installed and changed the display language into French. I also checked two options concerning the welcome screen and account users to display them all in French and worked perfectly.
I noticed the watermark before changing the display language into French, then followed this method to remove it : How to Remove Windows 8.1 Preview Watermark | MyTechBlog the method worked fine, but when I changed into French the watermark turned out again, then repeated the same method until I removed it.
when I finished I noticed that "My Computer" which appears as "This PC" + "Control Panel" + when I open Control Panel everything appear in English. but my display language now is French except the aforesaid.
I created the system backup (bit copy) in my Win 8.1 Pro and saved it to my internal HDD.
It is possible to move it now to another drive (e.g. to NAS)?
I try to do this manually, but even though I can open the folder "WindowsImageBackup" and I see several saved files in included folders I cannot manipulate with them.
Last night clean installed windows 7 pro and noticed that system reserved partition is created with 100MB. Then upgrade it to windows 8 pro and finally updated it to windows 8.1 pro.
After complete installation of windows 8.1 pro and noticed in computer management that still system reserved partition is 100MB. whereas if in case i did clean installation of windows 8 pro then system reserved partition will be 350MB.
My HDD capacity is 2TB and i have nearly 1TB of unallocated space. C drive is 200GB
Therefore i would like to increase my system reserved partition from 100MB to 350MB.
How to increase system reserved partition from 100MB to 350MB with step by step ?
What is the advantages of allowing 350MB to system reserved partition in windows 8.1 pro?
I wish to purchase a new laptop that has Windows 8 OEM pre-installed on a 256GB SSD and a recovery partition. I would like to move the recovery partition to an USB drive using the feature available in Windows 8 and create another partition on the SSD for a different OS (linux). I have several questions:
1. Is there any difference between a recovery USB and the recovery partition on the SSD?
2. [Answered] If I completely wipe the original Windows 8 installation can I restore my system using the USB drive?
3. [Answered] During recovery, can I chose on what partition I want to install Windows 8 or create a new partition for it (similarly to a fresh install) or is the whole thing done automatically? I want to know if the recovery process wipes the whole SSD or only the Windows partition and if my other partitions will be left intact (I can live with it overriding the bootloader).
4. If I shrink the Windows 8 partition, can I still perform the recovery? (assuming that I have enough space for the installation).
best configuration for a home network if I am using a mixture of different computers, including Win 7, 8, and a new-ish Mac? The Mac has Lion.
If Macs are compatible with Homegroups or Workgroups or Domains? I am a little rusty on my understanding of their differences exactly.
I also have a router that I am planning on using with a network drive option for an external HDD. I have a couple mobile devices as well but I'm not very worried about their compatibility.
i have recently installed windows 8.1 and i just realized that i have a folder of system recovery files which was o windows 7. i have tried to delete them through disk clean up but no luck.
i have tried to delete them but it tells me that i need adminstrator permission which i am the adminstrator.
System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2 OS Version: Microsoft Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9 Processor Count: 4 RAM: 11983 Mb Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000, -1984 Mb Hard Drives: C: Total - 243845 MB, Free - 168572 MB; Motherboard: LENOVO, 3434CTO Antivirus: Windows Defender, Disabled
I'm here for a "system folder" I cannot get rid of but as I'm posting my system info above I realize that Antivirus shows Disabled! I just checked Action Center and Windows Defender shows ON for both antivirus and spyware. Why does the info utility show Disabled??
Now, for the reason I posted, a couple weeks ago I was playing with different desktop apps to reply to phone texts via my pc. One of those apps required my phone to connect via Bluetooth to my pc so I went ahead and made the connection. I didn't really like the app so I uninstalled and also went to Devices and Printers and uninstalled the phone from there.
Now when I open My Computer ('Computer' in Windows 8), I see:
Hard Disk Drives (1) - Windows(C
Devices with Removable Storage(2) - Flash(D and BD-ROM Drive(F
Other(1) - SGH-T889 System Folder
Portable Devices(1) - Galaxy Note 2 Portable Media Player
My annoyance is with the Other(1). I know for a fact the "SGH-T889" is my phone's model number. Under Portable Devices I see the phone as well because I have it connected to the pc but even if I disconnect it, the 'Other' category remains. When I try to click, right-click, or do any type of clicking on SGH-T899 Explorer just hangs indefinitely. I need to restart Explorer to resume.
I want to get rid of this "Other" field. Underneath the SGH-T889 it says 'System Folder' in gray lettering and it shows an icon of a cell phone. But again, I cannot click on it without it freezing on me. There is no more phone in Devices and Printers or anywhere else I can think of.
I have been noticing recently, my C drive gets occupied fully even if there are no bigger programs installed.
Out of 150gb, after uninstalling few programs, the space left was 30gb. Day by day it started decreasing and i saw 20gb today.
I used the disk cleanup tool and it shows only 100mb after selecting all fields.
I was worried still that space was not freeing and ran this program WinDirStat. Here are the screenshots.
System Volume information folder occupies 75% of space - meaning 100gb.
There are lot of files which were around 1gb - 2gb and they are created from 2013.
why 100 gb? I read that this service is important but why is it taking this much of space.. remove these unwanted older files if any.
I tried below options after googling and also searching in this forum:
Used disk clean up tool and selected more options > system restore and shadow copies > deleteDisabling and Enabling System restoreDeleting shadow copies through VSSAdmin Delete Shadows commandVirus scan in System Volume Information folder (after taking ownership of that folder) through Kaspersky and ESET SSManual delete of the files.Selecting delete option in System Protection > ConfigureChanging maximum usage to some x%
I have tried all these methods but still those files are existing.
I've had 22 crashes since 3/19/2014 according to the event viewer. All of these have had the generic Event ID 41 for an unexpected shut down. They've been occurring daily, and I can almost guarantee that I'll get a crash within 5 minutes of turning on my computer and logging in. Once that first crash occurs, I can use my computer normally until I shut it down and then it'll happen again the next day.
These crashes usually occur within the first few minutes of logging in after a clean shutdown; however, they have also occurred at random intervals afterwards. I am not always doing anything intensive while it happens.
These crashes show no BSOD. The screens turn black and the power restarts, almost as if the power was cut and then started back up. I unfortunately do not have a spare PSU to determine if that's the root cause.
I've installed no new hardware into my computer recently, and no software at the time when this started. The only notable thing is that I setup a new router: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600.
There are no drivers on the TP-LINK webiste: TL-WDR3600 - Welcome to TP-LINK. I've let windows handle that. Yesterday I did install the USB print controller utility (there is currently no printer attached to the router), but I had a crash this morning.
I've checked my Windows folder for any dump files, and there's a memory.dmp from 11/25/13 (unrelated), and no Minidump folder.
