View 9 RepliesI think many people will move to windows 8.1 if Microsoft will fix the deleting of thumbnail cache in "Winodws 8.1 2014 Update".
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I turn my laptop on, I lose my thumbnails and it has to reload them. I've tried today to go through a few refreshes/reinstalls, and I'll occasionally be able to keep them, but then I just start losing them again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNormally in windows 7 I would change the folder persmission to deny "detele files and folders", but these options are greyed out on my windows 8. I'm the admin, and even if I log in as super administrator it's still greyed out.
How can I fix this problem and prevent Windows 8 from deleting thumbnail cache?
I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
I am planning to get a new computer soon and would like to securely overwrite the information from deteted files. I tries using Eraser, but I get a message saying I need to run as administrator, even after I run it as administrator. I think it doesn't work with Windows 8.1. Is there a tool that I can use that will overwrite information about already-deleted files, including the filenames?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted an image I wanted to use online so went to the bin to retrieve it. It had been permanently deleted without passing through the bin. This is something that has only appeared (or disappeared) in the past day or so.
I run MS Defender, but there is notihng in settings.
I recovered it in Windows 8 manager file undelete.
Forget it, the bin has come back again???? Weird!
I am looking for the correct DOS syntax to achieve the following:
In folder "C:ABC":
1) Delete ALLA folders, including their content.
2) Delete any files that are in the root of "C:ABC"
I have tried a combination of RMDIR and DEL but I am not managing to delete folders.
Would like to view contents in Recycle Bin before final deletion?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have recently installed windows 8.1 and i just realized that i have a folder of system recovery files which was o windows 7. i have tried to delete them through disk clean up but no luck.
i have tried to delete them but it tells me that i need adminstrator permission which i am the adminstrator.
they use a lot of space on my pc about 30gb.
I previously used ubuntu in my Windows 8 Pro and Windows got many errors so i deleted the folder of ubuntu..did not uninstalled and all that. now it shows ubuntu on OS choose Screen. then i thought installing Ubuntu would overwrite the existing one..but sadly i have two Ubuntu Choice..one is empty and another is working.
Now, how can i edit that screens setting. by setting i dont mean going to advance setting and choosing default os. I want to edit like in Windows 7, boot.ini file.or If there's any other way to remove that empty Ubuntu from the OS choice Option
I have some trouble with thumbnail windows in tasks bar. A few days ago, maybe after official last windows update, but not sure, I found a very vexing bug in task bar. When I hover on task bar icons, the thumbnail windows pop-up and when I hover in it all the preview windows is goind under the opened windows but the thumbnail windows is still accessible so I even can close it but I can't see it. It's very inconvenient especially with couple of opened windows.

EDIT:I've tried a host of different settings and tweaks. On normal shutdown/startup most settings seemed to preserve the icon/thumbnail cache, but a 'restart' always seems to spoil it!...Until I changed: Registry - HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsDWM - 'AlwaysHibernateThumbnails' value to 1(hex)
I want to see a JPG that I viewed some time ago in the default viewer of Windows 8. Do copies of previously viewed pictures still exist in a directory somewhere? If so, how can I find them?

View 6 Replies View RelatedAnnoying error of windows explorer. Windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
All this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.
Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.
My Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
Update:I also just discovered that Metro apps are not working anymore...what the heck its wrong with my windows.
I have a problem here, in the last two days, I can't see any preview of my pictures (not only pictures, but videos too). I've tried cleaning the old thumbnails using Disk Cleanup, but no work. Trying to untick the "Always show icon, not thumnail" in Folder Options, don't work too. Here is the screenshot:
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to clear all data, cache... upon opening a browser. I have ccleaner which removes all data so I need to find a way of executing a clean when i press my browser button.
Why I want to do this as i watch alot of catch up and live tv & in my experience it works smoothly if you clear data, cache... before you start the streaming.
I have 2 browsers on my pc. chrome which i only use for non streaming purposes and opera which I use only for video streaming.
Make a new file. c:empdork.txt
Add the single word "ishkabibble" and close the file.
Winkey-F, "dork", enter.
No worky. However, after some period of time, the file will be included in the search results. Or at least I'm pretty sure a file started to come up after a few days.
Now, If one were to have made the same new file in My Documents, insta-worky. That directory is included/indexed/cashed/whatever it's called.
Q: Can I add additional working directories I use often (c: emp, c:music, etc.) such that all nested files within will be included in the Winkey-F search results - instantly (or otherwise.)
Perhaps a "path" type environmental variable exists for search - I would imagine.
("Otherwise" - as in perhaps manually refreshing the cache before a search - which is lame, but serves the purpose.)
[I'm thinking Winkey-F isn't the tool.] Is there a grep type function or tool - that is absolutely categorically going to look at an entire drive for a file, regardless of system, hidden, whatever?
What about text search within a file? Using "ishkabibble" how do I find that file we made?
My problem is that all my thumbnails that would normally show as the actual picture in any file or folder including ones saved to the desktop have all been replaced with a windows generic mountain and sun cartoon. The only way I can see what any individual picture file is ...is to physically click on it and open it up in a viewer. This is a royal pain to try to find any individual picture to say the least.
.I get a error message saying restore could not be completed...try choosing a different restore date.........I have tried them all.....same error message
I thought the Win 8 File History backup feature looked like a good idea so I bought a 1TB external hard drive to use solely for backup. I was thinking that I would be able to store a massive history of backups on it but I can only set the size of the offline cache to a maximum of 20%. Why is it limited to such a small amount of space? Why not 80% or 100%? Is there a registry setting to increase this?
It seems to be a strange arbitrary thing to set it to such a small amount of space if you want to use a drive dedicated for the purpose.
I don't get it. I'm on a page. I click a link. I only stay on the new page for maybe 5 seconds. I click the Back Button. I get "connecting" like the word will change in 5 seconds? There's like zero efficiency. I think there should be a setting.
I'm currently on Waterfox 24.0. Pretty nice browser. But it's bizarre that something built for speed makes you wait on every Back Button press.
I just bought an ASUS VivoBook S551LB laptop which comes with Windows 8. It has a 1TB harddrive and an extra 24GB SSD which is used for cache i guess. I wanted to reinstall Windows 8 because I didn't want to use the OEM version. Doing that took enough work. But after reinstalling i decided to check if the cache drive was still working. The Disk Management interface showed that the SSD was empty when previously it was completely full, so I guessed that the cache needed to be set up again.
I installed everything from my laptop's driver page and ran windows update until there were no more updates left. I looked in every ASUS and Intel application installed on the computer for options regarding the cache drive but there was nothing. The Condusiv ExpressCache program had no gui and the command line didn't work, and the Intel Rapid Storage Technology program wasn't showing most of the options which other people have.
I read lots of threads and everything seemed to point to the need for RAID. I tried the registry edits, BIOS options (and with safe boot), and looking for RAID drivers for my laptop. The BIOS only has the option for AHCI, and there are no RAID drivers that I can find for my laptop. I installed different versions of the IRST program, tried deleting the SSD volume, formatting it, etc. The fixes people talk about in other threads don't work for me because my programs, BIOS, etc seem to be missing options. Is RAID my problem?
Here are some pictures of my OS:

Drives/Volumes:
ExpressCache:
Intel Rapid Storage Technology:
Just rechecked BIOS settings for the 20th time and the only SATA configuration option is AHCI, and there are no extra options in the BIOS regarding either of the Intel IRSTs
How come Enable Large System Cache is disabled by default?, why is it disabled by default on both Windows 7 and 8? and should one enable it on these new CPUs? does it have any benefits?
View 3 Replies View RelatedHow do I remove the thumbnail preview thing form the windows on the task bar? I'm finding them to be more annoying than useful.
How do I make new windows open at the end of the task bar, rather than beside similar windows?
Every since I updated my 8.1 to update 1 I have this annoying bug, the taskbar miniatures stop appearing and instead i have this annoying tooltip with whatever program's name I hovered last, that insists in staying above all other windows:
The only way to fix it is rebooting my computer, but it just comes back after a while.
I haven't found any link to any open program, any way I can debug this to find out why this is happening? I'm close to formatting the computer because of this annoyance.
On the other Windows PCs I've used, there has always been a small thumbnail at the bottom of the window showing details of the item/photo selected, but with Window 8, this is missing.
Some details are there, but they are not easy to take in at a glance and I really miss the thumbnail preview. Also, and this is really annoying - the details don't state the size of videos. I'm not going to rundown Windows yet again, as I'm hoping I'm missing something simple.
Is there a way to get this feature back? I've worked hard to make 8 useable, but this little, yet much missed, detail eludes me. Although I'm sure more annoyances will come along .
I am so used to doing a scheduled backup and image of my install once a week but now I see it is file history. I am really not sure how this feature works in relation to the old image and backups. I have partitioned a portable drive of 500GB for my backups and have started doing the file history. I am now looking at the advanced settings and see this
Now as I was not thinking of leaving my portable turned on 24/7 as I used to do a scheduled backup once a week so now I am a bit stuck.
The setting "Size of Online Cache"has also got me confused. I have set it to the max of 20% disk space.
What I was actually thinking of doing is to make my first "backup"of my fresh install of Windows 8 and keep this as a restore backup if I ever want to revert back to this point of my setup. I was then going to use another partition on my portable drive for my weekly backups as I did before.
PDF files on my laptop show thumbnail previews erratically. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In the attached screenshot, you can see that Word is showing nicely but the PDF file won't. Default app is Reader (the Metro app).
View 9 Replies View RelatedYes, IE is only showing thumbnails on the desktop icon on the taskbar. I can't get it to show the proper window at all! It used to be OK. I'm sure it's something obvious.
