Apps / Software :: Windows 8.1 Forgets Thumbnail View In Explorer
Dec 24, 2013
My Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
Update:I also just discovered that Metro apps are not working anymore...what the heck its wrong with my windows.
I have many folders (with a couple of thousand files) configured to display sorted by date. When using software and needing to open a file from within the program, it opens what looks like an Explorer window. However, the sort order is always by name initially and it takes a minute or so to suddenly display in the correct sort order as specified in Windows itself.
If I repeat this a few minutes later it goes through the routine all over again!
Running explorer from Windows 8 itself is no problem, it remembers the sort order. Is there a way to make third party software that calls up an explorer window do the same please?
Incidentally having given up on the truly slow and clumsy windows search function, I installed Search Everything and it is instant and reliable. Why can't Microsoft Search be like that?
Annoying error of windows explorer. Windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
All this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.
Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.
I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
I find it annoying when I use windows Explorer to browse my files and see folders where my files are not displayed in 'Details'-view. (Other views are: Icons, Tiles, Content etc...)
How do I set up Windows 8 so that it always displays all foders in the 'Details' -view
I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
PDF files on my laptop show thumbnail previews erratically. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In the attached screenshot, you can see that Word is showing nicely but the PDF file won't. Default app is Reader (the Metro app).
In windows 8.1 start screen, if I go to the all apps view & sort by category, the first category is 'desktop'. What determines which apps are listed here? Only some of my desktop apps are listed. Can I edit the list? Likewise, if I sort by name, the first group of apps includes only a subset of all my apps - can I edit that list?
I have just noticed at few days ago that in Internet Explorer 11 if I go to "view" tab to change the size of the browser window I'm viewing , the "50%" and "Custom" selection is shaded and NOT available. I do not know what might have happened to change this, or how to change it back.
I've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.
If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.
Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.
I retired from HP last week and I have my Outlook .OST file that I can't figure out how to view on my new PC, which also has Outlook 2010 pointed to my Gmail account
The Maps app that is on the start screen shows an aerial view of my neighborhood that is at least three years old. It says copyright 2014 but it is obvious the image is very old.
This is a new computer updated to Win 8.1. Does the app need updating?
I have copied my DVDs using CloneDVD2 to my Hard drive. What I do now to view them on TV using WD from my Hard drive. They are in lots of files/chapters instead of one movie format. I assumed once copied I could just drop them into my movie file location to view.
Windows 8 allow us to split the screen and see two metro apps at the same time. I miss the windows' windows ( windows without windows is quite stupid for me ), but I like metro. Is there any way to split the screen many times, horizontally and with different ratios? ( not only 80:20 )
We have a 10 pc'c 6 of which run XP Pro two of which run Win7 and two run Win 8.1. I have set us all up as a workgroup with homegroup disabled on the two Windows 8 pc's. I have set profiles on the win7 and Windows 8 all to have shared file on, discover devices on and in the advanced sharing set up all setting are share file on/password off etc. All is fine except one of the Windows 8 pc's simply will not show any of the other pc's within the workgroup other than the other Windows 8 pc.
Every time I turn my laptop on, I lose my thumbnails and it has to reload them. I've tried today to go through a few refreshes/reinstalls, and I'll occasionally be able to keep them, but then I just start losing them again.
I have some trouble with thumbnail windows in tasks bar. A few days ago, maybe after official last windows update, but not sure, I found a very vexing bug in task bar. When I hover on task bar icons, the thumbnail windows pop-up and when I hover in it all the preview windows is goind under the opened windows but the thumbnail windows is still accessible so I even can close it but I can't see it. It's very inconvenient especially with couple of opened windows.
'Thumbnails deleted' issue, or Icon / Thumbnail Preservation - Windows 8.1
EDIT:I've tried a host of different settings and tweaks. On normal shutdown/startup most settings seemed to preserve the icon/thumbnail cache, but a 'restart' always seems to spoil it!...Until I changed: Registry - HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsDWM - 'AlwaysHibernateThumbnails' value to 1(hex)
Is there a utility which integrates with Windows 8's File Explorer and gives tabs? I don't want dual pane. Just tabs. And I want it to integrate with Windows 8's own File Explorer preferably.
I have a problem here, in the last two days, I can't see any preview of my pictures (not only pictures, but videos too). I've tried cleaning the old thumbnails using Disk Cleanup, but no work. Trying to untick the "Always show icon, not thumnail" in Folder Options, don't work too. Here is the screenshot:
How to properly restart Windows Explorer from a program I wrote.
Details: I wrote a program that run as Desktop with Windows 8. After the program is started, it automatically Quit Explorer.exe (finding the PID and quitting/close) and all is fine. Before my program will be quitted by the user, I want to restart the Explorer.exe. It works but I get error message when trying to use the restarted Explorer with APP in the Metro/modern UI.
From what I understand, reason is that my program is running as administrator and when re-launching Explorer.exe also Explorer.exe is runned as administrator and this do not allow Metro APPs to be used.
I observed that when restarting Explorer.exe using my program it get the BUILTIN/ADMINISTRATORS as OWNER, while if restarting within the task manager it is as DENY.
Is there any way to tell Explorer.exe to run as BUILTIN/ADMINISTRATORS DENY and overcome the issue?
My problem is that all my thumbnails that would normally show as the actual picture in any file or folder including ones saved to the desktop have all been replaced with a windows generic mountain and sun cartoon. The only way I can see what any individual picture file is ...is to physically click on it and open it up in a viewer. This is a royal pain to try to find any individual picture to say the least.
.I get a error message saying restore could not be completed...try choosing a different restore date.........I have tried them all.....same error message
