Windows 8 allow us to split the screen and see two metro apps at the same time. I miss the windows' windows ( windows without windows is quite stupid for me ), but I like metro. Is there any way to split the screen many times, horizontally and with different ratios? ( not only 80:20 )

I was initially very excited to hear that windows 8.1 allowed users to split the screen in any ratio they want (not just 80:20) in metro mode. However, no third-party apps seem to be compatible with this feature. Only Microsoft apps will expand to any ratios other than 80% or 20%. All third party apps will remain in the narrow 20% view even when you try to expand them to, say, take up 50% of the screen.

The problem I'm having now is that everytime I focus back on Photoshop, the mail app closes/minimizes by itself. The same thing goes with Skype
I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient. Is there a way to remedy this?
I've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.
If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.
Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.
I was installed some apps from Windows Store (TuneIn, Adobe Photoshop Express, etc...), and... I cant find they shortcuts ...

Some of my Metro apps have just started to act weird.
My Email app just show a black screen.
XE currency loads forever and my Windows Store just flicker parts of the screen.
Metro shows weird search results.
I got an Acer 8935G so there only exists one VGA driver for this laptop. I installed it a couple of days ago and I'm suspecting this to be the cause since it wasnt like this before I installed the driver.
But I hope this is not the cause since with this laptop model, I dont have any choice when it comes to display drivers.

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
I am using windows 8 on a Asus touch screen.
When i hover my cursor over the top left corner, nothing happens. When I click windows + period, i get a split screen with my open windows displayed vertically on the right hand side and a blank screen covering the middle and left. But nothing will move to the blank screen. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use this split screen which is the main way I work.
My screen resolution is above 1366.
The screen is split into 8 views immediately from when laptop starts. (2 across and 4 down) Odd thing though is that an external monitor connected only shows the one view.Also the screen will go blank (purple background) every two minutes or so for a few seconds before the screen comes back. The cursor changes to a circle as if something is about to happen just before blank (purple) screen. Could this simply be a graphics driver issue?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSuddenly i turned on my computer and wrote the password of my user then screen just turned black and nothing came up (not desktop view nor the metro view). Then i moved the mouse and i could see the pointer on the screen so i thought maybe i am on the desktop view (i still guess that's it) but the taskbar from below doesn't show up. I clicked on my keyboard "Windows" button which makes my laptop go to Metro View but it did nothing. All i can do is move the pointer around and use the task manager. Throught the task manager i can open folders, apps etc... but obviously my windows is broken and i dont know how to fix it.
I tried to create a new task (in task manager) "explorer.exe" that did not work.
I'm using win 8.1 with a 2560 x1440 resolution, but I can't seem to get split screen to work. I've tried a few tutorials online, but without success.
I can easily split the screen by left mouse clicking the top of the screen and dragging down. The first window works normally with task bar showing on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to get anything else in the 2nd window that is created. One online tutorial mentioned something about executing a mouse-over on the left or upper left corner, but that doesn't bring anything up. I can get the search/share/start/devices/settings task bar to appear by mouse-overing the upper right hand corner, but this doesn't lead to filling the second window.
This keeps popping up in the lower right corner of my screen every time I boot up.. What it is.. right or left clicking on it has no effect, nor clicking on any of the 4 icons. The only active area is the little arrow on the left that closes the popup. It may be part of Windows 8 or may be some part of the ASUS addons that were installed with my system..

Unfortunatly it's a cruddy Metro UI version and not a real desktop application. I had to use a tile manager tool called OblyTile v0.9.8 to be able to make a desktop shortcut because I don't a truck with 8.1 That tool is here btw: [APP] OblyTile - Tile Creator for all programs. - xda-developers
Now I want this app to run in a window instead of fullscreen. An app like this.. i don't get it.. why leave it full screen when you have to multitask? I'd like to run this in a custom sized window that I can tell to always stay on top of other apps.

So, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.

Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
I'm using start8 and dual monitor setup in extended mode. Is there a way to keep the metro start menu up on 2nd monitor while have a browser or another program open on the 1st monitor.

I in my eagerness to clean up things stopped some program which controls the apps screen. I can call up the task Manager , then wait a minute and all my icons start to populate. I then close the task Manager and I can run any program I want. Some I don't have a desktop icon I just go the program files and select the one I want. Also my grandson uses this PC. He goes in as a different user and its all there, he can get all his apps to display on the screen. How can I get the apps screen back and populated with my programs?

Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.
