Can't view a website and the Excel web app via the split screen. Windows 8 keeps replacing one with the other. I do know how to have 2 sites up at the same time. I access the Excell web app via Sky drive. Is that the problem?
View 2 RepliesHow can I view a PDF file and an Excel file on the screen at the same same time? Every time I open a PDF file, everything shuts down, excel for the PDF. Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.

I can do it from the desktop but I have not found a way to do it by launching ie10 from the windows 8 metro screen.
I am using windows 8 on a Asus touch screen.
When i hover my cursor over the top left corner, nothing happens. When I click windows + period, i get a split screen with my open windows displayed vertically on the right hand side and a blank screen covering the middle and left. But nothing will move to the blank screen. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use this split screen which is the main way I work.
My screen resolution is above 1366.
The screen is split into 8 views immediately from when laptop starts. (2 across and 4 down) Odd thing though is that an external monitor connected only shows the one view.Also the screen will go blank (purple background) every two minutes or so for a few seconds before the screen comes back. The cursor changes to a circle as if something is about to happen just before blank (purple) screen. Could this simply be a graphics driver issue?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was initially very excited to hear that windows 8.1 allowed users to split the screen in any ratio they want (not just 80:20) in metro mode. However, no third-party apps seem to be compatible with this feature. Only Microsoft apps will expand to any ratios other than 80% or 20%. All third party apps will remain in the narrow 20% view even when you try to expand them to, say, take up 50% of the screen.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using win 8.1 with a 2560 x1440 resolution, but I can't seem to get split screen to work. I've tried a few tutorials online, but without success.
I can easily split the screen by left mouse clicking the top of the screen and dragging down. The first window works normally with task bar showing on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to get anything else in the 2nd window that is created. One online tutorial mentioned something about executing a mouse-over on the left or upper left corner, but that doesn't bring anything up. I can get the search/share/start/devices/settings task bar to appear by mouse-overing the upper right hand corner, but this doesn't lead to filling the second window.
Playing around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.
Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.
Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.
Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).
Click Apply
Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option.
You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen).
Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.
Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.

I have a Sony Vaio Pro 13 laptop, running Windows 8.1. If I have a couple of Excel spreadsheets open, close the laptop lid, leave it a minute or so, then re-open the lid, the screen momentarily goes dark, then comes to life again. All open apps are OK with the exception of the Excel sheets. In these, all the cells (& ribbon) are unviewable. The whole worksheet area on the screen is not the normal cells but a screen full of whatever colour I set for the default ribbon colour (some kind of beigy grey...). You can't click on any of the cells, can't see what's in them etc... you CAN close the sheet using the window close x at top right (even though you can't actually see the x) but that's all.
I have set up Windows so that NO ACTION is taken on closing the lid. It seems to be the same problem as described at hibernate - Excel windows invisible when laptop comes back from sleep - Super User but no working solution is available. (The one on this link refers to clicking 'restore' but that doesn't work) Running Excel 2013 (part of Office 2013).
I'm stuck as to what may be causing this... but I guess it should be an Excel problem since other apps (e.g. Word) don't exhibit this problem, but that may be a function of what's open at the time the lid is closed / re-opened?
I cannot get any info at the Apps screen. I can move all around the screen, I can search for anything but apps. I went to uninstall and all the programs are there. I in my eagerness to clean up things stopped some program which controls the apps screen. I can call up the task Manager , then wait a minute and all my icons start to populate. I then close the task Manager and I can run any program I want. Some I don't have a desktop icon I just go the program files and select the one I want. Also my grandson uses this PC. He goes in as a different user and its all there, he can get all his apps to display on the screen. How can I get the apps screen back and populated with my programs?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn all my other user names on this pc, I open a email, right click on image to save and it opens my NORMAL folders to save. One this ONE user name for some reason it opens a BLACK screen almost blank that has a colum of photos along the left hand side of the screen. it says files, pictures, go up, sort by screen.
It's crazy, I can't see anything like normal. It's so annoying and I've read online for hours and can't get this damn screen to go away. I want to see the classic view of the pictures folders when I am saving or uploading a photo. It does it on my other user names so what gives?
I'd like to send a image but it won't let me take a screen shot.
I've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.
If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.
Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.

We have a 10 pc'c 6 of which run XP Pro two of which run Win7 and two run Win 8.1. I have set us all up as a workgroup with homegroup disabled on the two Windows 8 pc's. I have set profiles on the win7 and Windows 8 all to have shared file on, discover devices on and in the advanced sharing set up all setting are share file on/password off etc. All is fine except one of the Windows 8 pc's simply will not show any of the other pc's within the workgroup other than the other Windows 8 pc.

I've got two SATA HDD, sadly I have not SDD , the first one contains two partitions: the first one with the OS and the second one with all the programs/games/utils I've installed in time. The second hard disk contains only datas like movies, pictures, music etc etc.
Just to be more clear, at the moment with Seven I've got C: with the operative system and D: with all software I installed in time with the two folder "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86).
As a fresh Windows 8 installation, need to maintain the double partition of the primary hdd or is it completely useless?
Just today, my desktop's been unable to boot into the login screen on Windows 8.1 due to a blue screen that appears for a split second, and forced the PC to restart. Some of this, I think, should be surely linked to the GPU, as it's left me with a black screen and loud fan noise about three of four times today. Each time I've restarted the PC, it's been able to to get back into Windows, though this time it's just giving me a BSOD that I can barely see at all.
What I'm wanting to know is how can I get it to show me the information for me to diagnose it. Could I use a shortcut on the keyboard, or will the information be saved somewhere?

When the Split file based on date option is selected, a new PST file is created containing only the emails received or sent during that specified duration. I have a Mac Pro, using Parallels 8, and the XP / Excel 2003 works faster, both virtual machines are on the same computer: The Mac is a Dual Quad Core, at 667 MH speed.
I have assigned 2 CPU's to the Wind. 8 virtual machine, ( and just 1 in XP). I'm testing these one at a time.
Why ? Is Windows 8 slower. Is parallels Windows 8 slower due to their interface? Are there settings that could fix this?
Is there a quick way to switch between a web page I am looking at and an open excel or word document or do I have to go via the start page every time ?

BUT, for the life of me I cannot figure out how to rename the cells labeled 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 & 5 at the bottom. And I know it is easy.
I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.
On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.
Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Well I think it looks fine to me, and I endeavoureed to use the Open & Repair when openng the file too, with no luck.
Installed Office Professional Plus 2010 on new computer with Windows 8. Can create and open all Office documents except unable to open existing Excel documents. When try to open, I am asked for the activation key. When key is entered, get message that key is not valid. Inserted install disk and re-entered activation key. Did not work.
