Maintenance :: Performance Of Excel 2013 In Parallels - Win 8 / XP
Mar 16, 2013
I have updated from Excel 2003 / XP to Excel 2013 / Windows 8 Enterp 64 bit. The new Excel appears to take longer just to move from 1 cell to the next, even on a blank workbook
I have a Mac Pro, using Parallels 8, and the XP / Excel 2003 works faster, both virtual machines are on the same computer: The Mac is a Dual Quad Core, at 667 MH speed.
I have assigned 2 CPU's to the Wind. 8 virtual machine, ( and just 1 in XP). I'm testing these one at a time.
Why ? Is Windows 8 slower. Is parallels Windows 8 slower due to their interface? Are there settings that could fix this?
What I want is to have a column with "notes" in which the cells (and the rows with them) expand downwards to accommodate additional text. Can this be done? All the online tutorials just seem to think people want lots of nice additional empty white space at the top of the cells when they change the cell height!
I am trying to analyse boot performance using this tool on 8.1 Pro.
Windows Performance Analyzer
I have already updated to the latest version of ADK but after rebooting it fails. I have Windows 6.3.9600 Build 9600 and Performance Recorder version 6.3.9600.16384(winblue_rtm.130821-1623) which I downloaded yesterday from MS.
Can run this on 8.1 or do I have some incorrect version?
Dual boot, can see any performance difference between 2 OS. I dual boot on my laptop with Win 7 and Win 8 ,both 64 bits and using the latest version of VLC player on both of them i can see that the video playback is smoother on Win 7 than in Win 8 for the same video file. With Windows Media player it`s the same as well with Media player classic. Any other issues between the 2 OS ?
I have Asus N550LF, always on boot or when i unplug the charger power management set to high performance which is causing the battery life to decrease ( wear level 7%), since i found out H.P. causes this i always set it to Balanced but its annoying to do it every time i boot up, any way to set it to default?
upgraded to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 7) a few days ago and I really love flight simulation. I have noticed that while I am playing Flight Simulator X, my computer in general starts to get pretty laggy (Moving windows, typing etc).
I have an i7 2600 (oc 3.9ghz), HD6780 and 16GB of ram installed. I opened up task manager to find that 7.4GB of ram is being used out of 8.5. But it says it is only using 47%!
I might be reading this all wrong, but I believe this is the reason why my computer's performance drops when I use close to 8.5 GB of RAM.
For the longest while I've had issues with my Windows 8.1 ignoring my selection of power options. By this I mean by CPU will stay clocked at 1.4GHz when it should be hitting around 2.3GHz when I set to high performance from power saving mode.
In the past it's cleared up by itself or through reboots but I'm thoroughly pissed off and I want it fixed.
I decided to dual boot ubuntu 13.04 with Windows 8. I had a dual boot setup before with Windows 7 and didn't have any problems.
Since this latest dual boot Ubuntu has been running fine however Windows 8 has become really sluggish. It now takes a few minutes to boot when before it was able to boot within sceconds. Once opening a program it crashes and freezes up the entire system, basically making windows unuasable.
There were no problems with windows 8 prior to the dual boot so I am not 100% sure why this is happening.
I backed my system up before install ubuntu so I can easily get everything back if I have to formate everything.
In the future I'm planning to build a new computer to replace this old hunk of junk and I'm curious as to one thing as I'm not entirely sure on this. Just how safe is using the High Performance Power Plan in Windows 8.1?
You see, my current rig is running an old i5 661, normally on the Balanced Power Plan on an old ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe Motherboard with a GTX 660 and 4GB of RAM on 32-bit Windows 8.1.
But my future plan is to use an i5 4690K with a Corsair H110 All In One Water Cooler for CPU Cooling on a Z97 Motherboard and 8GB of RAM in 64-bit Windows 8.1.
I'm hoping to get quite a bit of performance on this next computer cause hey... I'm planning on using it for gaming and such. But also web browsing and chatting with friends. I hear how High performance is suggested for 'optimising' Windows 8.1 but how much safer is it...
And how much of a performance increase could I possibly see in comparison to the old rig?
I recently purchased Dell inspiron 17r and due to problems in the first model I had to run win 7 on it for few days, and games like far cry 3 darkness 2 ran fine on it. After a replacement pc, I installed the same games(on win 8) but they lag, especially when the cut-scenes are played, the audio and video are out of sync in Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider(the latest one by MS) and darkness 2, why and how to solve this?
I run all the games on 1280x800 resolution with low settings on Windows 8 however on win 7 I ran them on 1366x768 with low settings and it worked fine.
After installing the 8.1 Pro update on a fresh install of 8 Pro, I only entered the Power options one time: to change the "high performance" plan to never turn off the display. (as I usually do when setting up windows)
Today, I noticed my display turn off after a few minutes, so I went to see if something had changed my power plan. To my surprise, I have found that I now have over FIFTY copies of the High Performance Power plan! Many of them have different settings in minutes regarding when the display shuts off, and when the PC goes to sleep.
I can't delete any of them, as windows apparently considers them ALL as default plans. If I didn't create these plans, how did they get there? How can I delete them? I know deleting default power plans is dangerous and can cause errors so I just want to avoid another re-install of windows.
I have a Dell Precision 690 with Dual Zenon 3.0 processors running Windows 8.1 Pro X86. CPU on the Performance tab only shows a single processor. I have the identical computer running Windows 7 Pro X64 and it Task Manager/Performance tab show2s two processors.
When I opened up my start screen this morning a lot of different apps appeared, most of them were performance and diagnostics apps. I used one to see if there were any problems with the memory on my computer, after it had completed and told me that their were no problems, all of the apps disappeared. Where the apps came from and why they all disappeared.
We bought new IMac's and a Mini Mac server for our office and have installed parallels to operate Windows 8. (necessary for Quick Books with Payroll)
We have had and are having numerous problems with the windows side.
1- On one computer windows 8 needs to do updates and it always updates then reverses the updates do to failure updating.
We had a problem with getting windows 8 activated because it would reject the activation code. The reason we were told this was happening is because we are a fresh install and the windows 8 disk was reading it as an update. Even though we paid for the full version.
We have had the IT people we hire look at this and they have no answers .
2 - We have a quick books issue and Office 365 Excel problem on one computer.
When exporting the spreadsheets you only have one option and its the .CSV file option to export, the others are greyed out : new workbook isn't available. This is only happening on one IMac. It works perfectly on the others.
I don't know if this an 8.1 or an Office problem, as my previous version of Outlook ran under 7. However, that version didn't need to hog 12-13% CPU all the time, whereas this one does.
I have been running XP and then Windows 7 on my iMac for some years but had to reboot when moving between windows and Mac.
Now that I have the latest iMac I have installed XP, using Parallels and it works fine, with both systems running simultaneously on adjacent monitors. Brilliant!
However, a Windows 8 upgrade, bought from Amazon, is proving difficult to activate. I thought that this may be because the XP is Sevice Pack 2 instead of SP3. Having difficulty getting SP3, I followed a video on Youtube which took me, via Regedit, to "CSD version" and changing 200 t0 300.
XP now appears to be SP3 but is it really? I haven't downloaded anything, just changed a number.
How can I view a PDF file and an Excel file on the screen at the same same time? Every time I open a PDF file, everything shuts down, excel for the PDF. Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.
Win 8.1 eliminated word and excel. I just updated to 8.1 from win 8 and have alot of documents and spreadsheets from Windows 8 office starter package. What programs can I use to open and edit these. Also, what programs are compatible to create docs and spreadsheets in win 8.1 to be opened and edited in win 7?
Is there a quick way to switch between a web page I am looking at and an open excel or word document or do I have to go via the start page every time ?
Can't view a website and the Excel web app via the split screen. Windows 8 keeps replacing one with the other. I do know how to have 2 sites up at the same time. I access the Excell web app via Sky drive. Is that the problem?
I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.
On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.
Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Well I think it looks fine to me, and I endeavoureed to use the Open & Repair when openng the file too, with no luck.
Installed Office Professional Plus 2010 on new computer with Windows 8. Can create and open all Office documents except unable to open existing Excel documents. When try to open, I am asked for the activation key. When key is entered, get message that key is not valid. Inserted install disk and re-entered activation key. Did not work.
I have a bunch of folders in the File Explorer that I would like to copy the names to a word or excel document instead of retyping them individually. Is there a way to do that?
I've got a tablet that runs Windows 8 pro. When the keyboard is up it takes up half of the screen, making is difficult to see whatever it is I'm working in and I can't figure out how to re-size it.
I'm also trying to re-size the tabs in Microsoft Excel. I know how to do this in Window 7 but I can't find the proper place with in the control panel in windows 8 to do it.
Ever since I have been working with Windows 8 I have received error messages stating "There was a problem sending the command to the program". It will be a document that I have created in word or excel on the exact same computer. I click on the folder in my library, find my document, double click on it, word or excel appears to start to open as a box displaying one or the other appears and then the error message appears. I click on "OK" in the error message and see the word or excel icon in my lower tray - click on that and there is my document. Not a huge deal but definitely not the way things should work..
I'm planning on trading laptops. I do audio production and gaming. I have an i3 and the cpu is clocked at 2.4 ghz and he has an i5 clocked at 1.8. How much of a difference will this impact performance? For better or worse?
I am curious because I had a desktop a while back and it had a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 and I went to this i3 @2.4 laptop and the cpu sucks in comparison to the desktop...I was originally thinking the i3 would be a increase since it was newer architecture.
I would still think on the graphics side its definitely an upgrade because the i3 uses Intel HD Graphics and it sucks...it doesnt even use opengl. The other uses a Nvidia GeForce GT 740M.
