I have a bunch of folders in the File Explorer that I would like to copy the names to a word or excel document instead of retyping them individually. Is there a way to do that?
View 4 RepliesIs it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
In Windows 8 Explorer ( have they changed the name of it ) you know, the file manager. In the left side, the top of the "tree" you have Desktop, Downloads, etc ....
I created a folder when the pc was new called Jack's Stuff. Later, much later, I decided I didn't like the name with "stuff" ... so I changed it to Jack's Place. Instead of the typical My(fill in the blank). So it changed there. But following through the tree to it's origin down finding it through USERS>Jack ... etc. It's still in all cases called Jack's Stuff. Now this is not typical for XP and before that. I jumped right from XP to Windows 8.
Why didn't the name change everywhere and not just at the top of the tree? Is there a way to insure the name changes everywhere if you rename a folder. Oh, I tried going through USERS>Jack and changing it but I forget right now but it didn't work out completely kosher.
Win 8.1 eliminated word and excel. I just updated to 8.1 from win 8 and have alot of documents and spreadsheets from Windows 8 office starter package. What programs can I use to open and edit these. Also, what programs are compatible to create docs and spreadsheets in win 8.1 to be opened and edited in win 7?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed 2003 outlook and word (outlook editor) on my brand new Win 8.1 netbook and when typing the "TO" and "CC" lines the names show up but when pressing enter they will not be accepted. I have to enter the first couple of letters of the names and then press the "check names" icon and go through the list even though the one I wanted was the one that showed up on the auto fill line singularly.
I know the auto fill does not go to the outlook contact book but rather remembers the names as they are "sent".
I have used outlook for years on both Win XP and Win 7 (various 32+64, Pro, Ultimate) and now with Win 8 it will NOT work the same way. My brother has the identical netbook and is running Outlook 2007 and it performs the same way - will not allow enter to complete the autofill. Whatsup over there at MS?
Is there a quick way to switch between a web page I am looking at and an open excel or word document or do I have to go via the start page every time ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedEver since I have been working with Windows 8 I have received error messages stating "There was a problem sending the command to the program". It will be a document that I have created in word or excel on the exact same computer. I click on the folder in my library, find my document, double click on it, word or excel appears to start to open as a box displaying one or the other appears and then the error message appears. I click on "OK" in the error message and see the word or excel icon in my lower tray - click on that and there is my document. Not a huge deal but definitely not the way things should work..
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.
For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.
Word had worked well in Windows 7, but now, after I moved to Windows 8.1 almost everything is messed up. Most annoying thing is the copy-paste function. When I try to copy something, it can't be copied to the clipboard and some weird cursor appears when I click where to paste. When I try to cut, the string is saved in clipboard and it works fine.
Also, when I run Word in safe mode, all the functions work fine (even copy-paste).
What should I do? I tried Office Diagnostics, but it shows 0 errors.
Whenever, I try double-clicking an Excel file in Windows Explorer, I get an error message that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program." I tried Microsoft's solution of unchecking the box under options that says "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" but it was already unchecked. I checked it and unchecked it and I'm still having the problem. This is using Excel 2013 with Windows 8.1 64-bit.

I click the check box that says "Save a preview" when im saving and I'm viewing large icon in windows explorer but the preview is not showing.
I have a large collection of car photos spanning several years and growing, +300,000. I am now trying to combine them by year of make. There are many files with the same name like "1930 CarMakerName." I cannot take the time to review every conflict at transfer time, much quicker and easier to see them in an Icon view.
Is there any way to have them automatically renamed like every other previous version of Windows that I have used?
When I import my photos from an SD card, it goes to the Photo Library on the Start Menu, is there a way I can insert the photos in a folder of my choice?

I read the tutorial on building a Windows EFI USB stick from the Windows ISO. I want to build an EFI/USB from an ISO of a bootable third party application, which is not designed to boot from UEFI. First, I went through the steps in Diskpart. Then, I copied the files from the third party ISO to the USB stick. Screenshot 34 shows the objects listed from the third party ISO. The second screenshot (35) shows what I have on my Win 8.1 ISO. I tried to just copy the efi folder and bootmgr files from the Win 8 ISO, but my Win 8 system (a VM) didn't like that at all. !
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't use the native Windows 8 copy/paste. Copy works, but when I paste, I get the "waiting" cursor, then get dumped to the Metro screen. So far, the only way I can move or copy things is with CFiShellToys or TeraCopy, and I installed these only after the Native Windows 8 Copy/Paste kept failing.
I've already run SFC at the command prompt, and according the the results, all is well.
I checked the Event log, and here it is.

I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

I am using Windows 8 Home Premium. This question pertains to Explorer.
In Explorer's HOME ribbon, there are icons for Move To and Copy to. There is a drop down list of destinations for each icon. Is there any way at all to clear these lists? I haven't found a way yet.
I found that my two Windows 8.1 laptops will not copy the entire contents of any folder to my Iomega network drive. Only the folder alone is copied and none of the sub-folders or individual files. I can copy individual files separately, but not the whole folder sub-folder, and files together. I have no problem doing this with my Windows 7 desktop PCs. My network drive is connected directly to my Apple Airport Base Station router.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).
Short of setting up a super admin account (would this even work?)
Any easy way to copy URL links in Internet Explorer? In Chrome I just right click on a picture like in Farmville and I get the option to copy LINK URL or IMAGE URL. Can you do that in IE too? Chrome is my favorite but I've been having trouble with it in Farmville.

Trying a Multi-media server with video files on HDD1, HDD2, HDD3.
What I want is to say create a top level directory videos, then under that directories video1, video2 and video3,so my application which says Multi-media folder -- I could point to directory videos -- then I'd get the 3 folders as part of the top level directory.
(Using Spanned disks can work but I'd rather not go down that route these days as the 3 disks I want to use are EXTERNAL HDD's and spanned disks need ALL the drives to be available and if there's any error you lose THE LOT. !!! )
With Linux it's easy -- just create 4 directories in your /home folder say /mnt/videos as top level, then in this directory create 3 sub directories /mnt/videos1, /mnt/videos2, mnt/videos 3
then mount the devices /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, /devsdb3 in /mnt/videos1, mnt/videos2, mnt/videos3
then browsing your home directory with mnt/videos you'll see all the data files in the 3 directories from all 3 HDD's -- no matter what their size, -- you only need a FEW BYTES too in your home directory !!. You don't actually copy or move any data from the HDD's to these directories. Things like search are great too since you point the search at the top level directory and the system will scan all the sub directories (so all 3 disks) too.
A lot of multi-media type programs seem only to handle ONE top level folder so when the HDD is full you are stuffed -- maybe limitations of the windows file system. I've seen somewhere that you can use some type of links if you have multiple devices but can't find it.
How does a NAS device handle multiple HDD's within the server.
The old library feature was half way there but in Windows 8.1 that feature seems to have GONE.
After it was removed from 8 . I managed to get it back into the Library but seems impossible for This PC.
It's a good, safe way to share files between multiple users on a PC .
Is there any way in doing this automatically without right click> open in a new window and when you click on diferent folders for the current open one not closing?

When I try to open any folder both screens will flash grey and then go back to normal, but the folder won't open. If I try again then the folder will open with no grey flash. If I switch back to just one screen, the same thing will happen, along with all of my icons being rearranged.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Adobe Reader 11.06 installed. I can open a single pdf perfectly well from Explorer, but when I double click on a second pdf to open it, nothing happens (it doesn't open). This only happens when I already have one instance of Adobe Reader open - opening the first pdf works just fine. And if I close the first one, I can open the other file (I just can't open them simultaneously). Opening a second file from Adobe Reader's open file dialogue also works fine.
After some investigation, it seems that when I open multiple PDFs on my SSD (which Windows is installed to), it works perfectly. It only runs into issues when opening PDFs located on another hard drive, which is an issue for me because my Dropbox folder is hosted on a separate hard drive.
All you have to do is disable security measures in Adobe Reader XI (Edit -> Preferences -> Security (Enhanced) -> Sandbox Protection -> Enable Protected Mode at startup -> turn off).
I am using Win 8 Pro 64-bit. I am unable to copy some sys files inside C:WindowsSystem32Drivers folder.
Getting message Error-Access is Denied. I have taken the ownership of the entire 'Windows' folder via the Add_Take_Ownership.reg file (which I got from this forum). Even that did NOT work.

Since 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I go to open my Explorer folder or if I haven't opened it in a while it is very slow to open. Takes maybe 5-10s to open up when normally it used to be instant.

Suddenly every time i try to browse Downloads folder, explorer.exe freeze and stuck in not responding. Task manager shows 50% in cpu, and memory usage just keep getting bigger.
I have tried booting into safe mode, and i could browse the same folder. But after i get out from that folder and try to open it again, it freezes again.
I have tried cccleaner, but no luck there. I am using windows 8 pro x64 with 8gb of ram.
It happened randomly a few times in the past, but not every time like now. Didn't installed anything new for few days. And the constant freeze started today.
