Jul 27, 2013I was initially very excited to hear that windows 8.1 allowed users to split the screen in any ratio they want (not just 80:20) in metro mode. However, no third-party apps seem to be compatible with this feature. Only Microsoft apps will expand to any ratios other than 80% or 20%. All third party apps will remain in the narrow 20% view even when you try to expand them to, say, take up 50% of the screen.

Sep 15, 2014I'm using win 8.1 with a 2560 x1440 resolution, but I can't seem to get split screen to work. I've tried a few tutorials online, but without success.
I can easily split the screen by left mouse clicking the top of the screen and dragging down. The first window works normally with task bar showing on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to get anything else in the 2nd window that is created. One online tutorial mentioned something about executing a mouse-over on the left or upper left corner, but that doesn't bring anything up. I can get the search/share/start/devices/settings task bar to appear by mouse-overing the upper right hand corner, but this doesn't lead to filling the second window.
Split Screen Not Working?
Feb 1, 2013I am using windows 8 on a Asus touch screen.
When i hover my cursor over the top left corner, nothing happens. When I click windows + period, i get a split screen with my open windows displayed vertically on the right hand side and a blank screen covering the middle and left. But nothing will move to the blank screen. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use this split screen which is the main way I work.
My screen resolution is above 1366.

Oct 21, 2012The screen is split into 8 views immediately from when laptop starts. (2 across and 4 down) Odd thing though is that an external monitor connected only shows the one view.Also the screen will go blank (purple background) every two minutes or so for a few seconds before the screen comes back. The cursor changes to a circle as if something is about to happen just before blank (purple) screen. Could this simply be a graphics driver issue?

I've tried disabling notifications for 3 hours but it doesn't disable the notification that pops out every time that I go to print a document.
It's basically warning me every time that I print a page on my printer that the ink is low. I know it's low, I will probably be able to still print a hundred or more pages before the cartridges actually have to be replaced.
The main problem is that the way that I have to do real life work, I need to print one page documents one after another, so in an afternoon I may end up printing 150 separate pages, so that means I get that message sliding out 150 times and the warning sound playing 150 times, about once every 20 seconds or so as I submit each page for printing.
Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know, so how to turn off the notifications that appear in the upper right corner of my screen.
HDDs And Split Partition
Jan 23, 2013I'm going to upgrade my whole system at home I'm going to install Windows 8 Pro.
I've got two SATA HDD, sadly I have not SDD , the first one contains two partitions: the first one with the OS and the second one with all the programs/games/utils I've installed in time. The second hard disk contains only datas like movies, pictures, music etc etc.
Just to be more clear, at the moment with Seven I've got C: with the operative system and D: with all software I installed in time with the two folder "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86).
As a fresh Windows 8 installation, need to maintain the double partition of the primary hdd or is it completely useless?

Apr 10, 2014Just today, my desktop's been unable to boot into the login screen on Windows 8.1 due to a blue screen that appears for a split second, and forced the PC to restart. Some of this, I think, should be surely linked to the GPU, as it's left me with a black screen and loud fan noise about three of four times today. Each time I've restarted the PC, it's been able to to get back into Windows, though this time it's just giving me a BSOD that I can barely see at all.
What I'm wanting to know is how can I get it to show me the information for me to diagnose it. Could I use a shortcut on the keyboard, or will the information be saved somewhere?
The GPU I have is the XFX 7950 Core Edition.

Dec 10, 2013I have installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop, and I recently discovered that MS has enabled encryption by default for people who sign in with a MS account, without their knowledge or consent, in the name of supposedly protecting your data. This may seem to be a good thing for most people, but I find it to be a blatant violation of privacy, especially in an age where MS holds your recovery key and will turn over your info to the NSA/Prism/etc on the government's whims.
I plan to use another form of encryption called DiskCryptor, for which only I hold the key, and there are no known backdoors or security vulnerabilities. It would be a burden on my system to have 2 forms of encryption enabled at the same time, and so I wish to disable it.
I found this page (Windows 8.1 Will Start Encrypting Hard Drives By Default: Everything You Need to Know) and it details everything. But the instructions at the bottom of the page for disabling dont work, I followed everything to the tee and there is no such option.
At this point I'm seriously considering rolling back to Windows 8, or even 7.

Security :: Disable UAC But Still Use Windows Apps?
Mar 18, 2013I have been using Windows 8 Pro 64bit version for a few months now and after a few teething problems I love it. I have disabled the UAC via the control panel, registry and the Local Security Policy editor etc... so now I don't get any popups at all. It's come to a point though where I now want to try out some of the apps but can't because without the UAC turned on I can't run any of them.
My question is is it possible to keep UAC turned off but still be able to run these apps?, I would love to know any tweak I can use to enable this but I won't compromise system stability for it.
