Just installed 8.1 and the "This PC" section of the navigation pane in file explorer has changed. In addition to listing the disk drives, it now lists six folders. how to remove the folders from the drive list?
How do I remove a library location name - in this case "My Pictures (273) L:UsersM and D" - so that all I see are the folders and files in the library?
The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer has six major categories from top to bottom as follows: Favorites, SkyDrive, Home Group, This PC, Libraries and Network. When I open Windows Explorer, the cursor is positioned on the Library Category. I would prefer the default cursor position to be on Favorites. I assume that there is no easy way to make this change, at least without editing the Registry somewhere.
In Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?
I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.
I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.
i currently can not access the available Wi-Fi networks menu. when i attempt to open the available networks pane from either the taskbar, or the settings charm, explorer restarts. i receive no error. I think the problem originated a couple of days ago. on that day, i logged on and the resolution was wrong; Windows had just completed installing an update. since then, i've reinstalled the graphic, network, and audio drivers. i've also uninstalled the latest Windows updates, as well as try and use system restore to go back about a month. no results. the only thing telling is i get an error in safe mode that says "The instruction at 0x389fac1c referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written." i recieve this error when i attempt to open the Network connections menu from the taskbar like usual.
I've just jumped to Windows 8.1 from 7 and am trying to work out how to unclutter my windows explorer navigation pane.
The bit in question is the "This PC" - it used to just have my c:drive and other network drives, but now it has all these other network devices (security cameras, and sonos amps etc) plus also Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos folders (which are sort of duplicated under favourites).
Is there a setting somewhere to not show all these extra items, and just go back to showing my C:drive and mapped network drives?
My Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
Update:I also just discovered that Metro apps are not working anymore...what the heck its wrong with my windows.
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
I find it annoying when I use windows Explorer to browse my files and see folders where my files are not displayed in 'Details'-view. (Other views are: Icons, Tiles, Content etc...)
How do I set up Windows 8 so that it always displays all foders in the 'Details' -view

File history seemed to be working OK. But then I added a library in Windows Explorer with my Google Drive folder. I don't have much stuff in this folder, less than 1GB. The problem is that File History is not backing up this folder in its backups.
Do I have to delete the file history backup and redo it again every time I add a library? (I haven't tried it but it'd be a nuisance wouldn't it?).
The photo app is not displaying any library or file. Whenever I open any picture it opens in the PHOTO app but there is no next or previous feature. That's why I tried to include that folder (from which I want to see the photos) in my picture library. I included the folder into the picture library by right clicking on the folder and selecting the INCLUDE IN LIBRARY option and then PICTURES and the folder get included in it. I checked it manually. But the photo app is still not showing any single thing. its only written there IT'S LONELY IN HERE WITHOUT PHOTOS.
I retired from HP last week and I have my Outlook .OST file that I can't figure out how to view on my new PC, which also has Outlook 2010 pointed to my Gmail account
I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.
I have just noticed at few days ago that in Internet Explorer 11 if I go to "view" tab to change the size of the browser window I'm viewing , the "50%" and "Custom" selection is shaded and NOT available. I do not know what might have happened to change this, or how to change it back.
How can I view a PDF file and an Excel file on the screen at the same same time? Every time I open a PDF file, everything shuts down, excel for the PDF. Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.
When in file explorer the zip icon under the share tab is not active. When I click on a simple folder, it does not highlight. If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. Is this something that need to be activated. I can un-zip a fle from the view tab.
"To change the way Windows Explorer opens (copy and paste)
one of the examples below to the target portion of a shortcut and name it Windows Explorer.
Examples:
Open Windows Explorer with My Computer as the root with all drives visible and "My Computer" selected. C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE /e,/n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"
(other examples followed)
In Windows 8.1 the "target" box is grayed out. File Explorer always starts with the THIS PC folder highlighted... and I would like to change that. How?
I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 (pro, 64bit) and everything seemed to be fine, except even in the beggining the file explorer was very very slow. (Had the green bar loading all the time) But today, the file explorer became completely unusable, 19 out of 20 times when I open "My Computer" it doesn't even show me my harddrives, even tho it should say Local Disc C and Local Disc D etc.

While trying to upload this file, it didn't recognize at first that I had actually selected an image. The images while trying to select a file to upload are either blanks or pieces of paper, instead of previews.

When trying to load a folder, in this case DOWNLOADS folder, where there should be a couple of TV series and a few films, it comes up with nothing, also the green bar is constant, and doesn't give results in the end. + I can't change the preview of images, like if they have small icons, big icons, medium icons etc. It has been grayed out.

Also if I delete an image, it remains on my desktop till I restart my PC. Overally it's really really slow and very many of the functions seem to not work. I have ClassicShell installed, I've tried uninstalling it, didn't work, reinstalled it, because I find it easier to find control panel and etc with.
This is all software I currently have installed: [URL] .....
Hardware: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (Vengeance) Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-MA790XT-UD4P Video: ATI Radeon HD 4870 (1024 MB) HDD1: WD 500 GB/16MB/S-ATA HDD2: Samsung 200 GB/8MB/S-ATA II Power Supply: 650W Chieftec CFT-650-14CS
So, I've just installed Windows 8.1 on my pc, and most of the time when I open the file explorer that comes with windows it comes up with a green loading bar at the top, which usually takes around 10 minutes just to view the files, then, other times when I open the file explorer, it loads instantly. Here's a screenshot of what happens:
Also, when I make a new folder, then double click and re-name, when I press enter the file name doesn't change, then the file explorer crashes, then when I go back, it shows the file has been re-named.

I'm not sure if you're able to click that so just copy and paste it.

And others which I don't seem to thing are necessary. To note: I don't have a Solid State Drive.
I recently installed Microsoft Office 2013. And ever since I installed that I have had problems with the file explorer.
I am moving my windows 8.1 libraries from C: to D:. I tried to move Documents to the root folder of D: which is empty during that time. It asked me if I want to move also my files to D:, I moved it. So, the next thing I did was also to move Pictures at the root folder of D: also. Then it prompted if I want to merge these to libraries, I hit yes. Now the problem is that I can't un-merge it anymore. Whatever I put in my 'Documents' lib also appears in 'Pictures' and vice versa. I tried to explore solutions like changing properties, well at first it will change but it reverts to one library again though they appear differently as 'Documents' and 'Pictures' libs.
I decided to restore default setting of these two libraries, but nothing happened. In 'Documents' library, the location is C:UsersIdeapadDocuments and upon checking the location of 'Pictures' library its C:UsersIdeapadDocuments also. When I change the location of 'Picture' library to C:UsersIdeapadPictures, the 'Documents' library also changes to C:UsersIdeapadPictures.
Is there any way in doing this automatically without right click> open in a new window and when you click on diferent folders for the current open one not closing?
In Win8.1, if app calls FE, e.g. Firefox for downloading a file, FE starts to refresh content of folder instead immediately showing it's content. This takes several seconds and I can see folders and files popping out of nowhere.
