I build computers for people. And after I install Windows 8.1 I want to install the drivers and set it to run first time boot again so my customers can customize it. I could do it on XP.
View 3 RepliesI have a custom built computer running Windows 8.1 64-bit. Recently, it stopped going to sleep on it's own (except the first time that the power plan is followed after boot). Otherwise, the monitor goes to sleep and that is it. After a bunch of other attempts and fixes, I have found that there is a driver that is blatantly disregarding powercfg settings (as seen here: [URL] .....). This has been going on for over a week. I have run sfc /scannow, and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth with no luck.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy PC running Win 8/IE10 . At random times during the day, I lose the Hard Drive/ DVDDrive Icons in the "My Computer" and all icons in Control Panel . On both pages I just get a blank screen with "Empty Folder" message, and a blue "Search Bar" at the top. Also, when the fault occurs, I lose all the Thumbnail Icon pictures of my Photographs, leaving justa white square with the name of the photograph beneath.
If I double click on the white square, the photograph appears normally jn Windows photo viewer.
Rebooting returns the PC to normal for a couple of hours maybe, but eventually the fault will reappear.
I have run Kaspersky AntiVirus, MS Disk and Registry , but all report "No Problems". Tried to run scan now but keep getting 'try as administrator' when I am the administrator ?

It started doing this today.
Windows 8 Pro x64.
For reasons I can't explain, the time on my computer keeps randomly jumping forward, usually several times a day, in 10-30 minute increments. I go in and re-sync it to the internet time servers each time I notice, but it just changes randomly again a little bit later. The time.windows.com server usually returns the message "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.", the other servers sometimes the same, sometimes no problem. The other computers on my network don't seem to have any problems.
How can I stop this happening?
The display and the sleep feature timers do not work. I just did a complete restore to try and correct this problem and another problem, which was no restore points and no ability to create one. The restore points are working for now, I mean that I was able to create a restore point. The display and sleep timer, not so, still a problem.
I've had this desktop Windows 8 computer since November and honestly I don't know if this has been a problem the whole time or not. Definitely, not the display, I know it has worked, but the sleep timer I'm not sure. I set the timer and just assume it sleeps and then goes into hibernation after a certain amount of time. With all the refreshing and restoring and changing over to this computer, I've not been paying much attention to the sound of the fan or the missing orange color on the power button (not visible, on the side of the computer).
I've set the timer through the Power Options feature in the Control Panel to 10 minutes for the sleep and to turn off the display to 3 minutes. Neither of them respond after set times. The computer is still wide awake and the display is not gone.
I have also gone to the "Change Advance Power Settings" menu box and turned off the hybrid sleep, which didn't work, and the Multimedia Settings in this menu box to turn on the setting "Allow The Computer To Sleep". Neither of these fixes did anything.
How can the computer not respond to something so basic and fundamental to its design?
Lastly, I'm wondering how this idea of powering down works at all. What I would like is for the computer to sleep after 20 minutes and then go into hibernation after 45 minutes. This would be when I'm done for the day. I have set the hibernation time in the "Change Advance Power Settings" menu box, but of course that does not respond either.
Currently I have a home network and need to do some rewiring but wanted to know if a software solution exists.

My laptop computer is the only computer has 2 NIC and thus I have set it up so that no other computers on my network can reach the network storage. I will be changing how things are wired together so that the network storage will now be connected through the Wi-Fi router, however I want to maintain the security of not allowing other computers on my network from reaching the network storage.
Is there a way that I can do this? Can I put the network storage computer on a different workgroup from the other computers? Can I have my laptop see 2 work groups so that it can see both the network storage and my home (unrestricted) LAN?
I am running windows 8 (not 8.1) x64 on all my computers. My router is a Linsys E4200.
I've noticed that when I leave my pc for some time and the screen savers come on, then the screens go blank (my machine doesn't sleep or hibernate) when I use the pc again I can see that during the time the monitors had turned off, the CPU usage was at or above 50% ? When I use the computer after that, watching movies, photoshop etc the cpu usage is much less than that!

For some reason, every time I wake up my computer, it disconnects it from the Wifi and when I try reconnecting it, it won't reconnect, then I had to restart my computer to connect it again successfully. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having the same problem with my Acer w500 which uses mSATA SSD drives only. I have upgraded to a Mushkin Atlas 120GB V series SSD and obviously upgraded to Windows 8 (professional) and every time it wakes from sleep it says there was a problem and needs to reboot. I'm going to put the stock 32GB Sandisk SSD back in later today and see if the problem is still present. I do have the latest BIOS on this computer and the latest firmware on the Mushkin SSD, drivers are the latest from Acer and most are November 2012 dates. There are no BIOS settings on this computer, all I really get are boot order, AHCI or IDE mode, and a couple other trivial things so I can't change suspend to ram or suspend to disk settings. I'll make the changes to hopefully show the BSOD when it comes out of sleep so I can try to gather more info.
This was a "clean" upgrade install (do not keep any settings or applications) which puts all the old stuff in a .old file, it was a clean from restore disk win7 that was used as the base OS to allow an upgrade, and is the 32 bit version of Windows 8.
I would like to automatically create a restore point everytime I shut my computer down. I have had no success with TASK SCHEDULER (which could easily mean I'm doing something wrong). Heard of/ Use any 3rd party software for this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedShortly after I pressed the Power button for the first time on my brand new Windows 8 laptop, I was brought to the screen where I set my time zone. I changed the default - Pacific Time - to my time zone - Eastern Time - and continued setting up my computer. Not long after, I realized that the time shown on my computer was wrong, and when I checked I discovered that the time zone had reverted to Pacific Time.
The problem is: I cannot change the time zone! (Yes, I am an Administrator.) Whether I do it from the Start Screen or the desktop, the time zone always reverts to Pacific Time. I even tried running tzutil from an elevated command prompt - the time zone will not change.
How can I change the time zone to Eastern Time? (I have plain Windows 8, not the Pro version.)
I had an issue with my Windows 8 where I was forced to reinstall it. I have completely wiped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. However, now it will not let me pick my boot order. It is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager as my Boot Option 1. If I use anything else, I just get a black screen with a blinking line cursor.
It didn't use to do this before I had to reinstall. I'm not sure how to fix this. It also will not let me choose F11 boot options, it always is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager.
How do I make it so I can boot from whichever boot order I want, instead of using Boot Manager?
I just installed Windows 8 as an update from Windows 7. After the installation I chose a background color, I set a password and after that there was a black screen. I was able to move the mouse around and after 20 minutes I rebooted. However, it shows the black screen within two seconds, nothing works. I have tried to boot into safe mode but also that doesn't work.

I read something about there being a problem with the nVidia drivers, however I can't find a solution that works because I can't boot into safe mode.
I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I just began to get an Event ID 1 in my event log at boot time. It's only a warning and can probably be ignored it but curious minds like to know what is causing it and possibly how to fix it. Here's all the specifics as recorded in my event log:

I have just updated my laptop to Windows 8.1, it now takes about 3/4 minutes to load after entering my password, all I get is a blank screen for all that time before I see the desktop.

Now I have 8.1 on the same HD as 7 and Vista. Here you go:

I am not using hybrid boot - and have no interest in doing so.
There isn't anything extra in 8.1. startup - there is actually more in win7 startup ( just clipdiary).
I've recently installed a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The installation went fine but then after a very short time my Windows 8 Screen goes black. I had to press the power button to exit. When again rebooting into Windows 8 the "blue window" shows and the spinner goes around for about 20 seconds, then all goes black.
I've checked the Power settings and ensured the "Turn off display" was "never". I also updated my Video drivers thinking that might be the problem. Both to no avail. I've done a "Refresh" and a "Reset (which took 3 hrs). Again, all was fine for a short time, but while exploring the OS, again the black screen. What else I could try to fix this Windows 8 problem.
I have installed Win 8 on a slave HDD. Every time I boot to Win 8 my dual boot screen is gone,also Win 7 activation. Then it boots directly to Win 7. To go back to Win 8 I have to use EasyBCD. Once in Win 8....activation for Win 7 gone again ....
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot or reboot my PC, it is a slow process, the time with the blue window and the spinning circle is only about 5 seconds, but then there is a pause of 30-35 seconds where absolutely nothing is going on. Black screen, no activity at the SSD or at the net. After this my USB mouse and keyboards wake up, and only a few seconds later my PC is running normally.
I have allways (in windows 8) had that black screen, but only for a few seconds. After Windows 8.1 this "dead screen" just getting longer and longer. I have had it for some times, but I used to use Intel Rapid Start, so I did not care. Now I got som faster ram, and Intel Rapid Start don't work with this ram, so now I have to boot every time, and now I'm not so happy with this long pause in boot.
What is Windows 8 doing in this time? How to eliminate it (or just get it reduced)?
I never had this black screen under windows 7.
After I restored to default settings in the bios , I get into this problem of bitlocker requiring the key to start. I tried to suspend bit locker but bit locker management is not available . OS is win 8.1 , product is Dell Venue Pro 11 Tablet.
When I tried to use elevated command to disable bitlocker , the system does not recognize "protectors" in the command line.
What am I to do? I am sick of entering the very long Key , each time I bootup ...
Upgraded to 8.1 last weekend. Thought I'd got most of the wrinkles sorted but now a couple more have emerged.
Discovered compatibility issues with Nuance Paperport 14. Removed and re-installed but to no avail.
But since then boot up takes an inordinately long time.
In addition Firefox doesn't load home page at start up and aVast gets turned off.
Scans by avast and MalwareBytes come up clean.
I have a weird issue in which after a boot of the machine it will take some time for USB devices to become initialized, yes... this includes my USB keyboard and mouse. So essentially even though the system may be up and running at the user logon screen, I have to wait five seconds until I can type my password in on my USB connected keyboard.

If I connect my external usb 3.0 3 TB WD My Book HDD, the boot akes 10 seconds.
Delay Chkdsk start up time at OS Boot | Windows 8 & 8.1 (Or Disable Altogether)
Previous to Windows 8 if Chkdsk needed to run without prompt the user had the ability to cancel if so desired. Since Windows 8, the user input has been removed.
At the least, you can change the delay setting as follows:
Modify DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"
IMAGE ONE:
1. Open Regedit:
One way to open regedit is to hit the Winkey+S and type regedit, hit enter when you see it appear.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:
Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager 3. Click on the folder "Session Manager"
4. In the right hand pane you will see registry values. Right click on the value "AutoChkTimeout" and select "Modify" (See image one)
If the value is missing, create it (See image two)
5. Change the "Value data:" to the desired delay time of your choice.
e.x. Changing the value to 10, will delay the Chkdsk start time by 10 seconds.
Click OK, close the registry.
Finished.

Right click on an empty space in the right hand pain (in folder "Session Manager")
Select "New"
Select "DWORD (32-Bit) Value

Base = Hexadecimal
Value Data = Delaytime (in seconds)
DISABLE automatic repair in Windows 8 & Windows 8.1
If you would like to disable automatic repair altogether:
1. Open the command prompt as Administrator (an elevated instance). If you have no idea how to open an elevated command prompt. Hit Winkey+S type in cmd.exe, when it appears, right click on the name and choose "Run as administrator"
2. Type the following text into the cmd window
Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled NO
You have now disabled the Automatic repair function.
To reinable: Follow step 1 and in step 2 type in the following text:
Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled YES

I recently purchased alienware m18x r2 with following specs
I7 3630m
Gtx 680m sli
12gb ram
750gb wd
120 (windows installed)
& 256gb sdd
Now for the problem when I receive the laptop it was preinstalled with window 8 and on the first boot it took around 5 to 6 mins to boot to desktop..I reinstalled the windows considering it to be the bloatware fault..
The problem gets solved but after i download alienware osd drivers , alienware command center and nvidia drivers the delay is back ..
It starts with a bsod (your pc ran into problem)error window minidump memory.dmp.etc and after that windows boot restart and shutdown after almost 5 to 10 mins..
In the duration of delay there is no hdd activity and after 3 to 5 minutes when the hdd gets actives it boots to desktop in 5 secs..
After my PC has been shutdown for a while (5 hours?), when I turn it back on again I get a BSOD.
If it is turned off for a couple of hours then I don't, everything is fine.
It normally boots up ok to the windows login wall paper, as soon as I click to select a user to login as it crashes.
A reboot normally cures it and I'm and running.
The messages I've been getting include:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
Driver IRQL not less or equal
(I've attached my SF Diagnostics Dump File)....
This keeps popping up in the lower right corner of my screen every time I boot up.. What it is.. right or left clicking on it has no effect, nor clicking on any of the 4 icons. The only active area is the little arrow on the left that closes the popup. It may be part of Windows 8 or may be some part of the ASUS addons that were installed with my system..
View 9 Replies View RelatedI received my laptop (Dell 17r SE) about a week ago but I have been having trouble with it's boot time. From pushing the power button, it takes anywhere between 5 and 10minutes to arrive at the login screen.
I checked the event log for Diagnostic-Performance, and the eventID100 has popped up quite a lot as "critical." I go into details and the stats are not looking to good. These are the times for multiple boots:
BootTime 175799/153962/217864/640216(This one was the first startup that the laptop ever did)
MainPathBootTime 122899/90262/135072/564816(This one was for the first startup that the laptop ever did)
Along with that critical error, I get other warnings saying apps/drivers/services like Svchost, rdbss, gpsvc, SMSSInit took longer than expected to initialise, thereby slowing startup.
I'm not sure if this is useful but apart from that, the log also shows EventID500/501 error events that state that The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded due to heavy resource contention.
