Maintenance :: Disk Use 100% And Average Response Time Almost 8 Seconds

Jun 27, 2014

I have had windows 8.1 for quite some time now and never had any issues with my OS. Until recently, my OS disc use now shows 100% with writing speeds going up to 100mb/sec and average response times of my HD from 4000 to 8000ms...

Nothing has changed on my side and I have it at a repair shop right now. They said hardware is 100% fine and they are running a stress test on my PC but everything looks good so far.

Browsers/Mail :: 8.1 - Any Time Upload File Browser Crashes Within Seconds?

Oct 28, 2013

New Windows 8.1 laptop. Any time I upload a file in a browser it crashes within seconds. It doesn't matter if I use Opera, Chrome or Firefox.

Also, some applications crash directly after launching them such as SmartFTP, SnagIt Editor and Jing crashes when I save a file. Also, when opening This PC in a file upload dialog sometimes it will keep loading for hours.

I've tried to get more information by clicking Debug after a crash and here are some of the errors I've noticed:

Code: Unhandled exception at 0x66AAF19F (apphelp.dll) in opera.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x0C9E0DA8.Unhandled exception at 0x7720A604 (msvcrt.dll) in Jing.exe: 0xC00000FD: Stack overflow (parameters: 0x00000001, 0x0F6E2FFC).

I've already performed "sfc /scannow" without any issues, reinstalled all software that has these issues , installed all available Windows updates and generally tried applying different settings but nothing seems to work..

Maintenance :: 8.1 Boot Time Slower Than Win 7 Or Vista

Jul 5, 2013

I had noticed 8.0 was slower booting than 7 or Vista. It is on a different HD so never bothered timing it.

Now I have 8.1 on the same HD as 7 and Vista. Here you go:

Win7 partition1 :

Win 8.1 partition 2:

Vista partition 3 :

I am not using hybrid boot - and have no interest in doing so.

There isn't anything extra in 8.1. startup - there is actually more in win7 startup ( just clipdiary).

Maintenance :: Delay Chkdsk Startup Time At OS Boot - Windows 8 And 8.1

Apr 8, 2014

Delay Chkdsk start up time at OS Boot | Windows 8 & 8.1 (Or Disable Altogether)

Previous to Windows 8 if Chkdsk needed to run without prompt the user had the ability to cancel if so desired. Since Windows 8, the user input has been removed.

At the least, you can change the delay setting as follows:

Modify DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE ONE:

1. Open Regedit:
One way to open regedit is to hit the Winkey+S and type regedit, hit enter when you see it appear.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:

Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager 3. Click on the folder "Session Manager"

4. In the right hand pane you will see registry values. Right click on the value "AutoChkTimeout" and select "Modify" (See image one)
If the value is missing, create it (See image two)

5. Change the "Value data:" to the desired delay time of your choice.
e.x. Changing the value to 10, will delay the Chkdsk start time by 10 seconds.
Click OK, close the registry.
Finished.

Create DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE TWO:

If the registry value "AutoChkTimeout" is not present:
Right click on an empty space in the right hand pain (in folder "Session Manager")

Select "New"
Select "DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Name it "AutoChkTimeout" (No Quotation Marks "")
Follow step 4. above.

Remember:
Name = AutoChkTimeout
Base = Hexadecimal
Value Data = Delaytime (in seconds)

DISABLE automatic repair in Windows 8 & Windows 8.1

If you would like to disable automatic repair altogether:

1. Open the command prompt as Administrator (an elevated instance). If you have no idea how to open an elevated command prompt. Hit Winkey+S type in cmd.exe, when it appears, right click on the name and choose "Run as administrator"

2. Type the following text into the cmd window

Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled NO

You have now disabled the Automatic repair function.
To reinable: Follow step 1 and in step 2 type in the following text:

Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled YES

Having disabled the Automatic repair feature, you can follow Brink's tutorial on manually running Chkdsk > Here:

Maintenance :: Display Turns Off Every 60 Seconds

Nov 25, 2012

I upgraded to Windows 8 from Win7 a few weeks ago. The display goes black after 60 seconds of inactivity no matter what setting I change. I would like to read documents without having to hit the space bar every minute.

My laptop is a Samsung Series 7 and requires Samsung Easy Settings to run the backlit keyboard. I've looked for a setting in the Samsung software, but don't think that is the problem.

I've also tried to adjust the power plan and advanced settings with no luck. My current power plan is set to Never on turn off the display. Adaptive brightness is turned off.

I5 4670k
MSI g45 z78 mobo
16 GB G.Skill 1866
samsung 840 evo SSD
toshiba 2 TB HDD
EVGA GTX 760

I have completely installed a clean win 8.1 install and still have this freezing issue. It happens after i login and after my bitdefender internet security loads fully i try to click on the desktop icons but they are frozen. My mouse moves and i can click on the taskbar and startbutton and CRTL+ALT+DELETE as well. It freezes the desktop icons for 30seconds max. I have booted into safemode and it occurs there as well.

I have ran multiple malware and antivirus scans, sfc/scannow, DISM /Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth, checked my event viewer for any errors, ran chk dsk, bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes, i cant figure it out. All drivers are up to date, I disabled my lan adapter since i am using wifi. Windows updates are updated, defragged the harddrives, and I been reading through forum after forum but i have not seen this exact problem before. Also this is on stock BIOS no overclock, I also monitored the cpu and memory usage during the time of freezing and it nothing out of the ordinary usage, cpu is kept within 5% and memory is at 20% or less.

Network / Sharing :: Connecting To Mapped Network Drives At Boot

Apr 28, 2014

This is a boot up timing issue, registry fix for network comming up. I am on a wired LAN which works ok. However, recently when booting I am getting the message cannot connect to network drives - these are mapped drives to NAS boxes.

However, when I access the drives the 'red X's' change to the network symbol and access is working. Its seems the computer wants to connect before the network is up. It is not a credential issue, but boot order. Is there anyway to make the network come up before the computer wants to map to it. Not a problem but a nag.

Windows 8 Won't Boot Up For First Time

Dec 30, 2012

I just installed Windows 8 as an update from Windows 7. After the installation I chose a background color, I set a password and after that there was a black screen. I was able to move the mouse around and after 20 minutes I rebooted. However, it shows the black screen within two seconds, nothing works. I have tried to boot into safe mode but also that doesn't work.

I have an Asus R500V
Intel core i5 3210M, 2.5 GHz
nVidia Geforce 610M 2 GB
4 GB memory

I read something about there being a problem with the nVidia drivers, however I can't find a solution that works because I can't boot into safe mode.

Windows 8.1 Pro X64 - Event ID 1 In Log At Boot Time

I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I just began to get an Event ID 1 in my event log at boot time. It's only a warning and can probably be ignored it but curious minds like to know what is causing it and possibly how to fix it. Here's all the specifics as recorded in my event log:

The backing-file for the real-time session "DiagLog" has reached its maximum size. As a result, new events will not be logged to this session until space becomes available. This error is often caused by starting a trace session in real-time mode without having any real-time consumers.

Dual Boot - Win 8 Goes Black After A Short Time

Jun 17, 2013

I've recently installed a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The installation went fine but then after a very short time my Windows 8 Screen goes black. I had to press the power button to exit. When again rebooting into Windows 8 the "blue window" shows and the spinner goes around for about 20 seconds, then all goes black.

I've checked the Power settings and ensured the "Turn off display" was "never". I also updated my Video drivers thinking that might be the problem. Both to no avail. I've done a "Refresh" and a "Reset (which took 3 hrs). Again, all was fine for a short time, but while exploring the OS, again the black screen. What else I could try to fix this Windows 8 problem.

Black Screen In Boot For Long Time?

Jan 15, 2014

When I boot or reboot my PC, it is a slow process, the time with the blue window and the spinning circle is only about 5 seconds, but then there is a pause of 30-35 seconds where absolutely nothing is going on. Black screen, no activity at the SSD or at the net. After this my USB mouse and keyboards wake up, and only a few seconds later my PC is running normally.

I have allways (in windows 8) had that black screen, but only for a few seconds. After Windows 8.1 this "dead screen" just getting longer and longer. I have had it for some times, but I used to use Intel Rapid Start, so I did not care. Now I got som faster ram, and Intel Rapid Start don't work with this ram, so now I have to boot every time, and now I'm not so happy with this long pause in boot.

What is Windows 8 doing in this time? How to eliminate it (or just get it reduced)?

I never had this black screen under windows 7.

Windows 8 Takes Long Time To Boot / Restart And Shutdown

I7 3630m

Now for the problem when I receive the laptop it was preinstalled with window 8 and on the first boot it took around 5 to 6 mins to boot to desktop..I reinstalled the windows considering it to be the bloatware fault..

The problem gets solved but after i download alienware osd drivers , alienware command center and nvidia drivers the delay is back ..

It starts with a bsod (your pc ran into problem)error window minidump memory.dmp.etc and after that windows boot restart and shutdown after almost 5 to 10 mins..

In the duration of delay there is no hdd activity and after 3 to 5 minutes when the hdd gets actives it boots to desktop in 5 secs..
