Jun 7, 2014I fix computers when they get a virus etc. and want to be able to connect their computers to my home network while at the same time ring fencing their computer so that they can only access the internet (for updates and virus definitions).
I want to be able to prevent their machine from seeing and interacting with my computer and other "trusted" machines and devices on my network and I want all of my machines (Windows 8.1 and Windows 7) from having their media sharing services and shared folders etc. popping up in my machines.
I understand that I can setup VLAN's for this purpose but sadly my router Netgear DG834GT does not have VLANS.

My husband recently and unknowingly deleted it and it contained all of my pictures from the past 5 years. Nov 9, 2013Windows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
Start Screen Search Won't Search IE Favorites Websites
Apr 8, 2013It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

Sep 15, 2014I buy a new computer, all now come with windows 8.
I do not like it at all, it is so dumbed down and so difficult to use; I wish I could return to windows 7.
I have however over the last few months installed many of my old programs from windows 7. This was straight forward. It was also easy to uninstall them using the control panel.
Then suddenly, in the control panel window for uninstalling, many of these programs are not listed. Yes they are still working well, like Microsoft word and excel, but they do not show in the uninstall window.
Could my anti virus AVAST have anything to do with it.

I have disabled it when I try to open it it says it is disabled. I really wouldn't care except several times a day my app will freeze. They always coincide with the windows defender error. When I try to uninstall I get the message asking if I want to allow the program to make changes to my hard drive. When I click "No" I get the following message: "You must use administrative privileges to complete uninstall, please try again."
