Updates :: Uninstall Some Hardware And Software Apps?
Jun 4, 2014
I am a pretty neat freak especially when it comes to my PC. I clean it every two weeks, hardware and software wise.
So, I was uninstalling a few things that I haven't used for a while or what's not needed anymore, and I have always skipped these because I don't know if they are vital for the PC or which ones are safe to remove, which ones I can uninstall and it won't affect my PC,

I wonder whether one or more of 13 recent Windows Updates has caused an issue. I can use System Restore to take my PC back to September 7th, three days before the Windows Updates were installed (there is just a Java update that has taken place since that I would have to carry out again). Alternatively, I can uninstall the Windows Updates one at a time or all together to see whether that rectifies the situation. Is there a preference? Should I uninstall from the highest KB number downwards if I uninstall the Updates one at a time?

I am using Windows 8.1 pre-installed on a new laptop used mostly for business, and use a mouse, keyboard and graphics tablet. I find that frequently a "Windows Accessories" app Windows Journal for note-taking and handwriting conversion opens a new file for no apparent reason. I have had as many as 20 empty windows start) and want to disable this but can't find away to.
When showing apps as tiles, there is no "uninstall" option for Windows category items (Accessories, Ease of Access, system) as far as I can see.
In Control Panel / Programs & Features/ there is no Windows Accessories Item.
In the Settings/PC settings/Search and Apps/App sizes only a couple of these "Accessories" are shown (e.g. Calculator and sound Recorder) but most others including Journal aren't.
Is there any other way to disable or remove this app?

How to really uninstall metro apps ? There is "uninstall" option in start screen, when you right click an app, but its a fake one as it only removes the shortcut... There still is a few gigabytes of metro apps files left after all that "uninstall".
Also, how to remove that silly apps list from app history in task manager ? There is one button inside "app history" tab, but it doesnt work...

I'm using Classic Shell to navigate and I go to the Apps folder. I have tons of apps installed it seams, Weather, Video, Travel, netflix etc.. i don't need any of these and wish to completely remove them from my system. I suspect i should be able to do this from Programs and Features and turning windows features on and off but I don't know where these apps reside.. I can't seem to be able to find any of them in the Windows features area. I also want to uninstall any unneeded apps that show up in the metro start page thing. Not just disable them, or unpin them.. I don't want them on my system at all.

I'm trying to uninstall Acronis Disk Director 11 Home but it will not uninstall.
I go to add/remove programs, select it in the list and click uninstall. That window comes up and says please wait while Windows configures etc. etc. then it just disappears and nothing happens. The program doesn't uninstall.
I've never had this problem with any other software before...what gives? How can I get Windows to uninstall it? Should I use something like this? [Solved]Acronis Disk Director 11 Home Build 11.0.2121 Completely Uninstalled or is that spyware/viruses/unnecessary?

When I go to the Store and choose Account > My apps, this is what I see.
It says there are four apps that are on my pc, yet it also says that they're not installed? I think this is why it's giving me the 80073cf0 error that I mentioned before. How would I go about completely deleting these apps from my computer? Like which folder do I go into and what do I delete?

How do i uninstall programs from the command line? I know how to do it in windows, and i did that, but they still are there in my start/metro screen. When i click on them they open into a command prompt window. If i click uninstall from metro it just takes me around to add/remove programs where they have already been deleted?

My copy of 64-bit Windows 8.1.1 has version 12 of Flash in C...SysWOW64Macromed.
I'm not sure why I have this out-of-date version of Flash on my computer. My copy of IE 11 has an up-to-date version of the Flash plug-in (currently v.14) and my copy of Google Chrome has its own up-to-date Flash player.
I haven't found a way to update the Flash player in C...SysWOW64Macromed, but in any case I don't know why it needs to be there in the first place.
Can I safely uninstall the Flash player in C...SysWOW64Macromed?

In windows 8.1, I installed the Lenovo Power Manager which is not yet available for this system, and I did it running it in compatibility mode, as described in the next link
Lenovo forums : Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 8 - Page 3 - Lenovo Community
and it got installed correctly, and seemed to work asking for a reboot that I did
The problem: I run into a BSOD and I believe it is due to this software (safe mode works ok)
So, as I try to unistall, and the uninstaller is called from "ADD or REMOVE PROGRAMS", all I get is again the message: "Warning : Cannot run on this system"
And of course, here there is not compatibility mode wizard .. How can I complete uninstall and clear this?

I've recently noticed a Windows update that changes the way you close apps, amongst a number of other things.
What it was:
What it is now:
This update was unticked in the 'Update and Recovery' section. Every other update had a checkbox ticked, this one didn't.
Other changes bought along by installing this update:
- New applications in the 'Apps' section of the Start menu are now highlighted with a greybox.
- Shut down options now in the start menu (and search, I'm not sure)
One extra thing that seems to be around depending on... something.
This one's related with Chrome. Usually when you start typing in the url box, your search terms are cut off with a rounded border going around. This box has disappeared with the latest update, but I have seen this happening in earlier versions of Windows.

So I have "Automatically update my apps" enabled, but pressed the "Check for updates" button to check if it is working correctly, and noticed there was a Bing Weather update available! I've gone ahead and installed it manually, and sure enough the version I had: .258 has been updated to .309. Why this app was not automatically updated?
By the way, I'm not using a metered internet connection.
(Later edit) Great, I've just checked again and there is a Bing News update available now! No automatic update happening, and also no number 1 visible on the Store app live tile, despite the fact that there is clearly one update available!
Curious that they were both Bing apps though. Maybe it's a Bing thing.

I have had this Windows 8 64 bit laptop for 6 weeks now and I wish I had never bought it. Recently I have found that I am unable to update apps in Store or even to download new apps. I have read the responses from other members to previous requests on this subject and I have applied the 'fixes' they recommend but the problem is still there.

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

I buy a new computer, all now come with windows 8.
I do not like it at all, it is so dumbed down and so difficult to use; I wish I could return to windows 7.
I have however over the last few months installed many of my old programs from windows 7. This was straight forward. It was also easy to uninstall them using the control panel.
Then suddenly, in the control panel window for uninstalling, many of these programs are not listed. Yes they are still working well, like Microsoft word and excel, but they do not show in the uninstall window.
Could my anti virus AVAST have anything to do with it.

How to I uninstall windows defender. I have disabled it however it is still running. I look in event log and it says unable to stop windows defender. It posts error 16 every 5 minutes. I have disabled it when I try to open it it says it is disabled. I really wouldn't care except several times a day my app will freeze. They always coincide with the windows defender error. I am running windows 8.1.

I understand how to uninstall a Windows 8 app from my computer but if I go into the "Your apps" option of the Windows 8 Store the app still appears as something I "own" (though, in this case, it happens to be free). What can I do to remove it permanently from my account? I do not want it showing up as an app that I own and is not yet installed on my computer.

Bought 8700 with win 8.1 on it not realizing the difference between it and the win 7 64 I use on my laptop. I run it in desktop mode. Twice I've signed on to live mail 2012 and all my email and subfolders have disappeared. Now I keep getting IE11 has stopped responding, can't find problem, must shut down. Never had any of these problems with my laptop or my old XP desktop. Any thoughts on un-installing win8.1 and installing a new Win 7 pro? Why did they stop support for XP

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)
I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.
Pattern - "Restart to install updates"
Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)
"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails
"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.
Then I can get back into Windows.
As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates. What could be going on?
They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)
