View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a new laptop with Win8 on it and because of where I take it to I would like to protect it with a password in case it gets stolen. How do I set it up so when I turn it on I need to enter a password to allow it to boot up or get into it once it's booted up?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently used a code and encryption process from this link [URL] ..... and saved the protected folder to my desktop. My husband recently and unknowingly deleted it and it contained all of my pictures from the past 5 years. After he deleted it, I tried restoring it from the recycle bin and I think it mightve messed up the encryption or something because now I can't get back into it and it doesn't even ask for a password. It just says it's empty.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to Windows 8, and on the tile display, when I touch a tile, i.e. the weather tile, a black screen appears with Accuweather.com in the middle; this lasts about a second, then the tile window display reappears. I would expect that the Accuweather.com website would appear, but it never does. Other tiles act the same way, but some apps are executed when the tile for them is touched.

I want to be able to prevent their machine from seeing and interacting with my computer and other "trusted" machines and devices on my network and I want all of my machines (Windows 8.1 and Windows 7) from having their media sharing services and shared folders etc. popping up in my machines.
I understand that I can setup VLAN's for this purpose but sadly my router Netgear DG834GT does not have VLANS.
I tried booting up my PC which has Windows 8 installed and it was working fine until yesterday.
It has a "Enter Password" screen upon start-up and I think it's a virus because it only lets me enter 10 characters and even though, I do put in the correct password, it still says it's incorrect. The computer also shuts down after 3 unsuccessful attempts.
I have attached a picture of the screen.
I have my Windows 8.1 PC's password policy set so that a password is not required when waking from sleep/shutdown. I used to be able to wake the PC from sleep and not put in a password, and I could turn the PC on after a shutdown without having to put in a password either. Since last week, though, when I turn my PC on, it will boot to the Windows loading screen and after loading for a bit, it will jump into the login screen and immediately report a login error that the username or password is incorrect. This happens before I even get a chance to type a username or password. The fact that I have to type in the username and password is strange because I have the PC set to bypass that option.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI set up the user account using my Microsoft email account. I would like to use a different password on my desktop vs the email password. My email password since it is accessible via web is strong 16 characters long, random characters password and changed often. I would like to change the desktop password to something I can remember, still strong, but I don't change it as often since you have to get physical access to my desktop.
I assumed once I linked to the Microsoft account I could change the password on the machine without it changing my email password.
Is this not possible? I would prefer not to have to lower the security of my email account just to accommodate Windows 8. Never a problem before as my email clients stored the password.
How to personalize a tile that shows up on the screen when you turn on the computer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to nest or embed Metro tiles so they act like folders? For example, Microsoft Office deposits at least eight tiles on my Start Screen. I rarely use any but Word and Excel, so I would like simply a generic "MS Office" tile that, when clicked, gives me all of the Office tiles.
I know I can make a folder from a bunch of shortcuts and then pin that folder to the Start Screen, but I'm looking for something that stays within the realm of Metro Tiles.
I have ten folders in my Pictures library all full of pictures, and they get cycled on the Live tile for the Photos app, and also show up under "Pictures" once you've opened the Photos app.
Is there a way to hide a folder so it's physically in my UsersLibrariesPictures location, but WON'T show up under the Photos app?
Currently, I run Windows 7 Pro on dual 24" monitors, and life is good.
In Win 8, if I open the desktop tile, I presume that the default action is to open the full-screen desktop app on just 1 of the 2 monitors. I'm guessing that the "Start" screen remains on the 2nd monitor.
Can I have the desktop app open, full screen, across both monitors? Can I have icons for my so-called legacy programs littered across both monitors like I have them on the Win 7 desktop? Just to clarify, I am NOT asking about having the background wallpaper extend across both monitors. I want the actual desktop application to extend across both monitors.
Is there a way to change this so the computer starts with desktop showing instead of the tile menu? I know it's easy enough to click the desktop tile and go there, but I rarely use the tiles and would rather have the desktop come up automatically.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using an eyefinity setup that makes three monitors appear as one 5292 x1050 resolution monitor. I would like the tile group positions to default to the center of the screens. Right now the tile groups are positioned to the far left of the left monitor. Is there anyway to get the tile groups to stay more to the center of the available screen space so I don't have to keep looking to far left all the time? I'd also like to know if there's a way to add space between tile groups. The bezel compensation eyefinity feature is causing some rows of tiles to get covered up. Are there any settings for this or registry hacks I don't know about?
View 7 Replies View RelatedGradually getting my head around Windows 8 CP, however after a recent reboot the tile for "desktop" is now gone under metro.
how to restore? If I right click and browse all apps it isn't present.
Having navigated to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms" I can't see a desktop shortcut there but I'm fairly sure there was one before.
I deleted the default desktop tile (the one that shows your desktop wallpaper) from the start screen. I've tried Recuva to see if I could still recover the file, and searched the internet and the installation disk. Unfortunately, the file it is nowhere to be found... Is there's another way to retrieve it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOk, maybe I'm missing something but accessing the pictures (live pictures tile) folder from the start menu shows my photo's but not in the order I'd like them to be in. As such, to my horror I've found I can't move them around (re-arrange them).
I can obviously re-arrange them if I access the "My Pictures" folder through explorer, in fact they're actually arranged differently than what is displayed accessing it through the Windows Start Screen.
Anyway is it possible to arrange them there because trying to manually move them around proves fruitless.
Also, how do you take a snip of the stat screen using the snip tool? Win 8 can be annoying at times.
Is it possible to add specific picture as a tile, to the start screen?
Im talking about placing a photo to the tiles screen, can it be done?
I am using windows 8.1 RTM version.
I cannot find my desktop tile or the store app anymore. I have tried searching with the search charm too. I checked various users and they are not there either. Some desktop programs have gone missing too
My brother in law has somehow deleted the Desktop tile on the start screen. How can I restore it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 8.1 (actually, made a clean install), and everything seems to be working as designed. Except, on the Start Screen, although all the other apps show live tiles, the Weather app does not, showing only a plain blue background with the word "Weather" on it. The live tile feature is definitely turned on for this app.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, last night, I had noticed that there was no desktop tile and if I typed "desktop" on the start screen there was no app for it Also, "Change PC Settings" wasn't starting. My guess is that it did that because I had a really hard time uninstalling a program so I had to try going by means of registry editing. So I ended up refreshing my computer (from the installation disc since PC settings wasn't working ) Now everything is back to normal. So all I want to know is how I can prevent this from happening again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI see on my friends laptops that they have all four resizing choices available on their Desktop tile in the start menu. I don't know why but I do not have the large option available, as you can see in the picture attached. I'd like to have it like the tile next to it.
I'm running 8.1.
I post this because I get a glitch where tiles get cropped whenever I resize or move one. I've left an image of the problem as an attachment. This only happens with tiles on the borders.
