I want to customize the start screen a certain way and basically lock it so that employees (or customers) cannot move icons around, install new apps, or run unapproved applications.

Nov 2, 2012I'm using an eyefinity setup that makes three monitors appear as one 5292 x1050 resolution monitor. I would like the tile group positions to default to the center of the screens. Right now the tile groups are positioned to the far left of the left monitor. Is there anyway to get the tile groups to stay more to the center of the available screen space so I don't have to keep looking to far left all the time? I'd also like to know if there's a way to add space between tile groups. The bezel compensation eyefinity feature is causing some rows of tiles to get covered up. Are there any settings for this or registry hacks I don't know about?

Computer Gets Blank Start Screen
Aug 7, 2013After installing Google Chrome and making it my default browser, I looked on the Start Screen and could not find a Chrome tile. The All Apps screen did have one and when I right clicked it, it indicated that it was on the Start Screen as it had the "Unpin from Start" icon. After trying various methods of getting it to show up, I did unpin it, which also removed it from the All Apps screen of course, then did a search for Chrome, started Chrome and then closed Chrome. When I then tried to go back to the Start Screen to see if there was a Chrome tile, I was greeted by a totally empty screen. I rebooted Win 8 and everything came back normal (I hope) but now with a Chrome tile.

Mar 4, 2012I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
Browsers/Mail :: IE Tile On Win 8.1 Start Screen Opens Firefox
Aug 25, 2014I'm running Windows 8.1. and recently I tried to launch Internet Explorer (11) from the start menu. It launched Firefox. I ran a search from the start menu for Internet Explorer found it and clicked. Again Firefox opened instead of IE. I clicked on an icon on my desktop set up to open a website in IE regardless of browser preferences. It opened Firefox and went to the homepage I have set in Firefox not to the URL I had set.
Opening IE by browsing to to C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe. workes just fine. Creating a desktop shortcut directly to the exe works fine. I played around with the associated programs for internet and even with everything defaulting to IE it would still open Firefox when clicking on the IE Tile on the start menu. I uninstalled/reinstalled IE11 with no change.
So I then uninstalled Firefox. Now clicking on the start icon for IE it brings up a box asking me something about an exe with a checkbox (can't remember exactly) and below that Internet explorer or I can choose other down below. If I chose IE it brought up another window asking what I wanted to do with iexplore.exe. Save/ Save As / Save and Run. None of the options opened IE. IE at this point still runs by going directly to the exe in Program Files.
Logged off as that user and logged back on as a different user and ie works just fine from that profile.
I'm guessing something in my registry is hosed, how I can repair this?

Apr 14, 2013 I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.

Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.

3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.

I can search for it, then right-click on it, and click on "Pin to Start" and it creates a tile on my Start screen, but I want it to create a new tile by default when I install an app, and it has stopped doing that!!!!

Apr 29, 2013Ok, maybe I'm missing something but accessing the pictures (live pictures tile) folder from the start menu shows my photo's but not in the order I'd like them to be in. As such, to my horror I've found I can't move them around (re-arrange them).
I can obviously re-arrange them if I access the "My Pictures" folder through explorer, in fact they're actually arranged differently than what is displayed accessing it through the Windows Start Screen.
Anyway is it possible to arrange them there because trying to manually move them around proves fruitless.
Also, how do you take a snip of the stat screen using the snip tool? Win 8 can be annoying at times.

Aug 18, 2013When I leave my computer for an extended period of time, after returning the screen is sometimes blank. I know that everything is still on, the screen just won't come on. I know things are still running in the background because when I restart my computer by pressing the reset button (the only thing that works), when I boot back into Windows a few seconds later and relog into an IRC channel I was in before, my old nick gets ghosted. If my old nick was still in IRC this means my computer was still on and working fine until I hit the reset button - screen being blank was the only issue.
I've tried multiple things, such as hitting the "wake" button on the keyboard. I've checked my power settings carefully, modified them, but still no luck. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this behavior, it either happens or it doesn't, and the time period it takes for it to happen seems random. Browser session auto-recovery.

Mar 29, 2014I followed the tutorial on this site for scannow. When completed (no errors), I typed exit at the command prompt. I have only a blank screen with functioning mouse pointer. When restarting I get the hp logo, then the windows "please wait" icon for about one second then it goes black. I originally cloned windows from my sea gate 1Tb hhd to the toshiba ssd. I can boot from the hhd with no issues. Just won't boot from ssd. I would run the recovery disc but it claims I need 140 Gb to do so and I only have 128Gb.
