View 1 RepliesWhen I am trying to play a media file (or just open WMP12) it goes to the welcome screen. No matter what I choose after It cannot finish the setup process and always comes back to the welcome screen.
I've tried to remove, clean & compact the registry and install it back using programs and features. I've also tried to download and install it standalone from here Download Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8.1 from Official Microsoft Download Center but it says that the update is not applicable with my computer.
Can't get any Shift F8 or ESC to work while powerup is going. Once the desktop appears, the icons in task bar begin reloading, every 2 seconds. Any attempt at a click is aborted by the reboot.
Only relief is press power button. Tried removing battery and draining residual charge by holding power button 2 minutes. No difference.

In the past week I've suddenly started having a lot of problems with my Gigabyte P35K-CF2 laptop (purchased in Dec 2013, OS Windows 8.1 64-bit). At any given time regardless of what I'm doing with it, the computer will freeze for a couple of minutes max. The mouse cursor still moves but I can't click anything and the keyboard won't respond.
In addition, during startup the computer may get stuck in a loop of errors and reboots (the errors include INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, sometimes with iaStor.sys). The startup time has also increased significantly from when the device was new, from sub 10sec to around half a minute.
The laptop has always been in AHCI SATA mode before all this started. After the freezes got more frequent and I manage to boot to Windows like once in every ten tries, I figured I should try to reset the Windows installation. After firing up the laptop I went to the recovery menu where you can refresh, reset and so on. I tried to initiate the reset feature a number of times but every time it complained that the recovery partition is missing. After that I somehow managed to boot Windows and went to create a recovery drive with the utility found in Windows. It managed to copy the laptop's recovery partition into a spare external USB hard drive I had. Then I restarted, changed the boot location in BIOS from the SSD to the external hard drive and tried to initiate the reset function from there, and somehow it started the process and Windows was reset correctly. However, the same freezing and error/boot loops persisted and kept getting worse, so I tried resetting the Windows installation from the system's own recovery partition with IDE SATA mode selected and somehow that worked but then I got into the situation where I am now - after downloading the 8.1 update Windows won't boot at all.
I've always installed updates via Windows Update and Gigabyte's Smart Update, and have never deleted anything from the boot SSD's Windows folder. The recovery partition seems to be there but with AHCI selected the reset feature won't recognize it. Actually, I don't know if resetting the system will even fix my original problem (the freezes and boot loops). I don't have any other Windows installation media.
It's been a few weeks now, of very random freezes. It's been in and out of computer stores, saying they've solved the issue, and I bring it home and it starts freezing again. Running Win 8.1 pro/ I don't get any blue screens, and I get no crash dumps. And I always have to hard shutdown. driver verifier isn't picking anything up either. Temps are normal. I've reinstalled windows 3 times now. And always with the same results.

i have windows 8 professional installed.i have a ECS G31T-M7 board. i dont get sound from the front panel of the cpu. i tried updating the sound driver but still no use.

I've had this problem ever since I upgraded to Windows 8.
I was initially a Windows Vista user, and this headset worked perfectly fine on the Vista Home Premium OS. However, ever since my upgrade to Windows 8 Pro the microphone refuses to pick up sound.
I have done everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, Realtek specifically to plugging it in through the back of my tower. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it is not a hardware problem, as I use this same headset with my Xbox 360.
I've gone in and changed the settings via the sound menu, I have done literally everything I can find thus far. The microphone is detected, however there is constantly one bar of sound pick up from the microphone. My voice isn't even picked up from the Microphone set up menu. I've unmuted the front mic through the sound menu as well, but I still get nothing. I've reset everything to default countless times, and I still get no results.
The headset I am using specifically is the Red Samurai Xbox 360 Stereo Headset.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.

I'm trying to extend my desktop screen on my TV. I have my laptop connected through an HDMI cable to the TV. When I choose extend desktop, nothing is shown on the TV. The TV is blank. Windows does detect the TV screen because both displays show up in the "Screen resolution" dialog. The TV also indicates that it has a signal.
The screen has been extended because when I move the mouse to edge of the screen, instead of stopping, it keeps going. When I drag a window, it does not stop at the edge but it keeps going. However, neither the mouse or the window is shown on the TV. Of course, I can move the mouse and window back to the laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8.1, Intel Core i3-4010u, 6GB RAM, Integrated Intel HD graphics. I have Sceptre X325BV-FMDR TV. Not sure if this is an issue with my TV or laptop.
When I am in my start screen and I touch my desktop tile to get into my desktop I don't get into it. I either get into IE or into the last website I have been in and not closed. Can I sort this out?

Since upgrading to 8.1 I have started going directly to the Start Screen from the Lock Screen. Before in Windows 8, I went to Desktop. I have my taskbar at the bottom of Desktop which contains all the icons I want to access and it means now I am going back to Desktop from the Start. How can I organize my laptop that I don't directly to Start Screen from Lock Screen but go to Desktop?

The front port worked with Ubuntu and other Linux distros but it seems to be the opposite case with Windows 8.1. i've been having this problem since I THINK starting to use a HDMI wire. But now, i cannot get any audio from the audio jacks, they are detected, but no sound is produced and I just cannot figure it out. I've disabled the HDMI, installed, un-installed, re-installed audio drivers and pretty much any method and i can find thus far and nothing at all has worked. I'm a huge lover of music, and the is driving me insane!
Note: The speakers are fine, they work with my iPhone.
Is there a way to make the desktop button/tile/link to the desktop on the start screen to be a different image besides what is really on your desktop screen?
For example, lets say I want a photo of deep space on my tile desktop button, but don't want that image as my desktop screen. Just the tile.
I'm on a desktop, so I don't want to get any of those hints of what wonderful things I could do if this was on a touchscreen.
why would it show these things on a non-touchscreen anyway?!

I'm waiting to see if this old hardy perennial will work on the new Windows 8.1 when booting directly to the desktop.
You can currently bypass the Windows welcome screen at boot time quite simply (although on Win 8 it simply takes you immediately to the start screen).
Simply do this to sign in automatically at startup:
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
Reboot machine -- and you will be taken straight to the start screen.
My mouse works fine on the tile screen, but won't click when on the desktop screen. It moves fine and if I move it to the corner I can click on the setting button, but its anything on the desktop,or programs that run from the desktop that are effected.

I know this can be done via Devices/Play/Xbox/IE App but the problem is that most content won't play properly with the IE App-IE browser yes but not the App for some reason. This same content will play on Chrome but I can't screen mirror with Xbox with Chrome. I really want to be able to do this without spending more money.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRight out of the blue, windows 8 loaded up painfully slow so i restarted my HP g6 laptop.After restarting the laptop the user login screen appeared fine fine but as soon as i login the metro tile screen flashes to a default coloured desktop screen and back to to the metro screen every second. It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!
My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.
There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.
