View 8 RepliesWhen you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
How can i put Task manager in the Context Menu.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAny way to add the command to end a task to the context menu. E.G. When you right click something on your taskbar you could click "End Task" instead of "Close", this would be extremely convenient instead of having to open Task Manager.

I am having trouble with a few games that require a substantial amount of right-clicking during game play.
At some point, the mouse will be (in game) but hovering over the bottom left corner of the screen, at which point the Win-X menu launches and kicks me out of the game and back to desktop.
Is there anyway to forcibly disable this menu totally, or to make sure it doesn't activate during full screen games?
Since yesterday, I cannot open any folder on my PC and when I try to open task manager to close explorer, it closes right away.
When I try to open any folder (This PC or Downloads for example) my background flashes black, then the task bar goes blank and then nothing happens. When I try to open the task manager, it opens for 2 seconds and then closes itself down. All my files are still accessible since I am able to still play movies from WMP and I can still search from the Start screen.
I do not want to format my PC just to get something like this working again.
OK, I've noticed that what's happening is, explorer.exe pretty much restarts every time I try to open a folder. And that obviously stops the folder I'm trying to open, from opening. What's happening with task manager.
I've been loving the new Task Manager, it's better in every aspect except the time it takes to use. 1 minute is not acceptable for anything that isn't Skyrim, it takes so long that at first I assumed I hadn't pressed the keys correctly.
However it's much faster to open the second time, so I guess some process stays running after it's opened the first time. I wouldn't mind slowing down my startup a bit if it allowed me to have that process already running so when I open it the first time it takes a second.
Which process it might be and how I can set it to execute on startup? I'm not trying to open Task Manager on startup, just whatever makes it open faster.
I updated to Windows 8.1 last month. It was quite smooth until some issues started 2-4 days ago. I don't remember if I have done something that may cause this, but I'm quite sure that I didn't make any change to the system.
The problem is, even when I am not opening any applications, my fan suddenly blows very strong and makes loud noise. From the CoreTemp utility I notice that CPU usage is 100% and its temperature is much higher than normal.
Again, this happens even when I am not opening any applications, and have started the computer hours ago (so it's not starting up).
The most strange thing is that the problem is solved completely when I open task manager. The first thing I see after doing that is task manager itself is taking up ~60-70% CPU, but that number goes down very quickly, and the total CPU usage drops to normal. The temperature shown in CoreTemp drops also and the fan becomes quiet.
Another issue with my current computer is that when I open certain applications (for example, Google Chrome), the process of the application appears in task manager, but in the background. And the application does not show up until 10-20 minutes later.
And when I use Windows Media Player, every song is stucked for ~5 seconds before being played. And there're spikes in the sound.
My brother just emailed me, he's just installed update 1 from Windows Update correctly and it's rebooted to a black screen and cursor only - nothing works, safe mode is no different - can't open CMD or Task manager
Can't seem to get Advanced options > System restore, PC keeps only giving F8 safemode options, none of them work
He doesn't have any 8.1 Media either. How to get him back into Windows ?
I've just uninstalled RealPlayer on Windows 8, but I am unable to remove the link from the list after clicking "Choose default program" from "Open with". I've already gone through this: Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs - Windows 7 Forums, but it still wouldn't work. How to remove it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.
I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.
I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.
How can I add a program to my open with menu In windows 8.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOne of the biggest complaints about the Windows 8 start menu/screen, is the fact that it takes up the whole screen, unnecessarily blocking everything a desktop user is currently working on.
I've been playing around with Windows 8.1 Preview, and am getting used to snapping the start screen to the left side, like you can with metro apps, using Win+Arrow.
Because Windows 8 treats the Desktop like an app, it can be displayed on the right half of the screen, while the start menu is snapped to the left half of the screen.
So I'm just wondering whether there's a way to force the start screen to always open at half the fullscreen size? In other words, always snapped to the size.
This would be a great way to meet the fullscreen-start-menu-haters half-way.
I was wondering how I could go about removing items from the Open With menu without having to download any programs for it. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. I would like to remove Photos/Paint as I never use those 2 items.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo recently I was switching my desktop background repeatedly, trying out a few images because i wanted to change it. I had been using the right click menu on images, using the available option to 'set as desktop background'. Then, for no apparent reason that option dissapeared, along with the bolded 'open', 'edit', and 'print' options. not only that, but it seems to have slightly rearranged the menu as well as added a few new 'options' that do absolutely nothing when i try to use them.
Preview, rotate right, and rotate left do nothing whatsoever. Open would have opened it in an image viewer i downloaded and set to default, and edit would have opened it in Paint. Images aren't the only things affected. it seems to have happened to .txt files and video files, except the preview and rotate options don't appear.
I can still double click to open these files in their default programs, and use the newly bolded 'open with' drop-down menu to open image sin paint, but it would be nice to have my normal options back.
As my machine doesn't support SLAT in HyperV I am using VMlite XP mode to run some 16 bit programs I need. Very occaisionally VMlite hangs on close after it has saved state or shutdown the guest machine.
I go to task manager and click end task on the Workstation GUI and it closes but very occaisionally end task wont closed the program. Sign off wont close the program either and restarting hangs at the blue screen 'restarting' I have to push the reset button on the tower to get the machine to restart.
Is there any hidden way of closing VMlite so I dont have to restart, a sort of hard end task?
Not sure if this is the right board, but I'm keen on accessing the aforementioned box directly rather going through task manager due to the run as admin check box, but I can't find the file location. I prefer using the run dialog usually to access apps because I could do without extra effort to merely SEARCH for apps. However I can't use it to run apps as admin (at least I've forgotten the line I might have used in vista and 7). Can the aforementioned box be accessed directly?

I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.
See attached pic to see what I'm talking about.
Im referring to this bottom menu; when I right click my app/programs, nothing pops up below. I also cant rearrange tiles, groups and stuff.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI noticed that wsappx is occasionally consuming non-trivial amounts of my CPU.
Searching the internet, I learn that wsappx is not necessary for operation of my PC. One user suggests killing it via task manager.
When I tried to end the task I got a scary warning along the lines of "may render Windows unusable" I probably did not record the message accurately, and wsappx seems to have (temporarily?) gone away on its own.
disabling or uninstalling this task?
I use a wireless mouse - the Lenovo laptop touchpad and my thumbs screw up my typing at the most inopportune moments. I try to manually disable it at login, but forget. I can permanently disable the touch pad easy enough in its configurations, but sometimes, I do need to enable it - usually just temporarily.
I can make tasks easy enough. Is there a simple way I could make a task at login to disable my Synoptics TouchPad.. Keystroke combo is Fn+F6 to enable / disable it.
How do I get those keystrokes into a task ?
I should have had an automatic system restore backup today (It's been 7 days since the last system backup). It didn't happen, so I checked the Task Scheduler, and I see that System Restore task last ran yesterday morning at 8:46. Why didn't it run this morning?
