Maintenance :: Any Way To Add (End Process / Task) To Context Menu
May 13, 2013
Any way to add the command to end a task to the context menu. E.G. When you right click something on your taskbar you could click "End Task" instead of "Close", this would be extremely convenient instead of having to open Task Manager.

I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

I recently needed to kill a "SYSTEM" process in task manager, but of course "Access Denied".
It was ekrn.exe or Eset Service, I don't know how it got in there I haven't even installed any of their products.
I tried ending the process, tried through Command Prompt, but nothing worked.
So I ended up uninstalling Nod32(Which IDK how it got in my computer).
I am wondering, If I am an administrator of the PC why do I not have complete control?
I really want to kill those SYSTEM processes and they aren't even SYSTEM sometimes like this case.
Is there any way to kill them?

As far I know all MS windows 8.1 updates are installed, but the problem is I don't get the context menu when I right click any tiles in Metro. So I can't remove or re-size anything. When I right click it only give me check mark in right side the box.

What I'm running into is a problem trying to add a handler for any file to the context menu. I add a key to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shell and add a key to that as command. What happens is, instead of just running the program with filename as param, I get a dialog "always use this program for this file type" with a checkbox checked, or "keep using blah blah"
If I uncheck the box and hit Enter, nothing happens. So I can't run an "all files" handler without assigning it to every file type I happen to open with it. I'm sure the registry is a big mess.
What did they change since Windows Seven? I don't get it.

I pinned an application to my start menu, occasionally I need to run that app with Admin privs. All I can find in the Start Screen is the "Run As Admin" option that appears at the bottom of the screen.
It's a real pain to have to click the app near the top of the screen and then slide all of the way to the bottom for "run as admin"..aside from pinning it to taskbar in Desktop (whch is probably where it belongs anyway)?

I’m experiencing this odd and selective issue of options missing from folder context menu, under the choice New in most folders. Certain folders seems to have all the options as should. Down's a pic of a usual situation and the rare occasion of full menu, with Finish OS.
A quick scoop around indicates that the few folders to have full options on drive C are Desktop and Program Data. Some seemingly random folders on other drives also provides the full menu, but most only the option for New folder. This has bugged me to a good degree lately and while doing so unnecessarily hindered my desktop work.
I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64 (non 8.1) with Start8 (v1.16).

When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.

I have Onenote installed on my Windows 8.1 laptop.
Is it possible to right click a text document (or any file/document) saved on my laptop and have it sent to Onenote.
Onenote does not show when I right click a text document.
I have used Evernote before and I'm sure I could do this.
Perhaps it is possible but Onenote does it in a different way?

I have windows 8.1 and downloading the 13.12 Drivers gave me this program called "AMD Feature Manager". It has a green AMD logo and shows up when I right click anywhere in the desktop, right under "AMD Catalyst Control Center". Whenever I click on it - the program just loads AMD CCC. It seems pretty redundant to include this since I have "AMD Catalyst Control Center" right above it that does the same exact thing. Is there registry edit that can get rid of the option in the Context Menu or can I just uninstall it completely?

I am having trouble with a few games that require a substantial amount of right-clicking during game play.
At some point, the mouse will be (in game) but hovering over the bottom left corner of the screen, at which point the Win-X menu launches and kicks me out of the game and back to desktop.
Is there anyway to forcibly disable this menu totally, or to make sure it doesn't activate during full screen games?

For Windows Vista/7, there was a very useful Tool called "Prio", with which one could set and save the priority of a process directly inside the Task Manager. But now in Windows 8, that Tool isn't working anymore, and there seem to be no alternatives either how it's possible to set the priority of a process permanently in Windows 8? Doesn't matter if by a Tool or by Coding, but is it possible somehow?

Scenario: A cpu-heavy program - which windows often reports as "not responding" because it takes time to process stuff - for which I want to change the process priority to anything I.
Issue: Even if I don't change process priority for the program, Windows 8 thinks he's the boss and decides to put it at "below normal", which has an impact on the performance of the program. If I change priority, it will just put it back to below normal.

I have a laptop running Windows 8 Pro x64, and lately I'm facing an issue where the System process (PID = 4) has spikes of 100% of disk usage according to task manager. I can't watch a video or play a song on a media player properly, for example (there's a crackling noise and the playback is slow), because this process (System) keeps using 99-100% of my hard drive.
Even if I have just booted up and running only the essential OS process and services and completely idle, task manager keeps reporting several spikes of 100% of disk usage. Tried uninstalling antivirus (avast free), but that didn't work. I really have no clue what do to prevent this process from writing/reading so much into HD and reaching 100% of disk usage.
Specs:
OS: Windows 8 Pro x64
CPU: core i3-2350M @ 2.3 GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz
HD: Samsung Spinpoint ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB 5400 RPM

I am wondering such a tool exists that I can use to create "presets" to automatically shutdown (or start) a pre-defined set of background processes or apps.
I do a lot of different things... AutoCAD, video editing, audio editing, control system programming, etc. When I doing some of these things, I would like some background tasks to shutdown. Right now, I use Task Manager to do this manually.
Even better would be the ability to defect when a specific program is running and that triggers some actions.
Presets for Windows Services would be great too.

Having a problem with the Regular Maintenance waking the computer (Windows 8 on a Lenovo Q-190) to do its scheduled task as it's supposed to do. Here are the symptoms:
1. If I change the time for Scheduled Maintenance in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL be reflected properly in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Scheduler.
2. However, if I check the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time" in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL NOT reflect in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Schedular. Specially, I check the box to wake up my computer in the Action Center Maintenance Settings, but the corresponding checkmark is NOT reflected ("Wake the computer to run this task"), in the properties of the actual task in Task Scheduler.
3. I then put the checkmark directly in the Regular Maintenance Task itself ("Wake the computer to run this task"). However, at some point in the future, (not right away; I close and then reopen the task to make sure that it 'sticks'), the checkmark "disappears. Then, the task does not run at night while the computer is asleep, but runs in the morning when I wake the computer for regular use. At that point, the checkmark in the task is gone.

I deleted maintenance tasks in task scheduler (Microsoft>windows>task scheduler) because I didn't want to have automatic maintenance fire up when I'm working, but sadly... some shit got messed up. My computer starts using hdd at 100% if left idle, and then freezes and all kinds of weird crap that I'm almost positive have to do with me deleting maintenance.
which tasks do I need to re-create in task scheduler in order to have auto-maintenance once again. If you could just read to me all the tasks, triggers, and which programs they are running .

I found out how to add a task to the Automatic Maintenance that runs each morning. I use Geekzone's EPG collector to fill in the guide on Media Centre and I though it would be nice for it to run as part of Automatic Maintenance rather than wake the computer up again later to do it's thing.
Here's how:
Create an XML files in notepad and paste this in...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
<Task version="1.4" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2004/02/mit/task">
<RegistrationInfo>
<Date>2013-02-01T19:34:03.9529687</Date>
<Author>johnofe-laptopJohnOfE</Author>
<Description>EPG Loader</Description>
[Code] ....
Save the file then in Task Scheduler, import the XML and it will appear. Edit it from there further if you want.
I got this from exporting a task that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance and edited it to suit.
the thing is, I still don't know how it works! I haven't been able to create a schedules task from scratch that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance.
Other than plagiarising existing tasks to get what I want, how it's really done?
I have what I want, and it works great being able to run all the things I want all at the same time at 3AM each day, as part of Windows' ritual. Even better, if I disable it from waking the computer, everything runs when I'm logged in and Idle. It's fantastic.
