View 9 RepliesI went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.
Screenshot attached
I have this problem of not being able to customize power options. I get this error :
Furthermore creating a custom also fails
What setting my computer as a result is using. I also blue screen when my lid of my laptop shuts, im going to guess because of the lack of a profile to tell it what to do. I believe it was exception not handled monitior.sys (but im not sure)
I just noticed that when I go to the Power Options that the options are missing. It says the Power Plan is missing or unavailable or something such. One answer said to do a refresh or reset of Windows 8. Isn't that a bit drastic? Is there no way to do it by tweaks. I did that refresh once and lost more than I thought I was supposed to.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOne day I go to shutdown/hibernate/sleep button and a pop up says "no power options available". I can still preform these options but I have to go through signing out first then picking. How do I change this? Oh, and no, I didn't add or upgrade, etc. anything lately.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe power options on my computer have stopped working. The screen does not dim or turn off automatically and the computer does not sleep automatically.
I bought my HP Pavilion 20 all in one desktop two weeks ago and then power options stopped working a week ago everything else seems OK. I looked in the console and "balance" is checked, going further, all the times are set (display dimmed 5 mins, turn off display 10 mins, put computer to sleep 30 mins). A day or so before this happened I replaced the standard (rather cheap) wired keyboard and mouse with a Logitech k360 Keyboard and m326 mouse (both wireless).
I can put the computer to sleep using the keyboards sleep button. I also temporarily changed the "Put Computer to Sleep" section in Power Options console to "never" when "Windows Photo Gallery" needed to update the face recondition on my photos transferred from my old computer (it took over 24 hours). After "Windows Photo Gallery" had finished I changed it back to 30 mins and since then no power options.
Have power options set to never sleep but it still does after about 20 minutes and I need to re-enter password to get going again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed windows 8 on a desktop computer that had windows 7 before. Screensaver was working perfectly on windows 7. Since windows 8, the screensaver won't start, the display won't turn off after 15 minutes like I set it up in power options. Just to test, I removed all USB devices that could prevent the screensaver to start. I closed all the programs running in the taskbar, including those hidden. The screensaver won't start even if I set it to one minute.
Pressing the preview screensaver button works. But letting it go by itself doesn't.
For the longest while I've had issues with my Windows 8.1 ignoring my selection of power options. By this I mean by CPU will stay clocked at 1.4GHz when it should be hitting around 2.3GHz when I set to high performance from power saving mode.
In the past it's cleared up by itself or through reboots but I'm thoroughly pissed off and I want it fixed.
Why Plan Settings and 'Advanced Power Options' configuration differs from each other?
My plan Settings sets the time to sleep with computer plugged in to 25minutes whereas the advanced power options has it on 180 minutes. Same applies to other options of the power options.
I was wondering what this mess is all about? I restored both to default and set the advanced to 'Never' and manually configure the Plan Settings.
I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?

I want to remove all options except for Hiragana and Full-Width Katakana and set it so that when I change my language to Japanese it automatically sets to Hiragana. Similarly with Korean how do I remove the alphanumeric and leave only the korean language option? Secondly, is there a button is can use to fluidly tag between language options within an language? So for instance, if I'm in Japanese is there a combination of buttons to press such that I can change between Hiragana and Full-Width Katakana?

However, when I enable CSM boot it gives me option of booting into my systems. I want to restore my Fast Boot options so my laptop boots up faster and basically because my laptop is made for Fast Boot.

Since i did a fresh reinstall of Win 8 64 i have never been able to change the folder view options. Example; I am in a windows explorer window, everything is displayed as a large icon (yuk), i right click go to view and change to details. I then click 'view' on the toolbar and click options, I then navigate to the 'View' tab whereby my intention is to apply the 'detailed' view to all explorer windows in future yet both fields are greyed out (the 'Apply to Folders' and 'Rest Folders').
It has never been usable since this fresh install (ie on previous versions of win 8 installs i recall it working, but not this one, ie its not a recent problem, has always been like this).
I have win 8.1 x64 Core installed. The thing is, i want to remove some items from my start screen and right clicking does not bring up any menu (which it used to on my previous win 8.1, this is new installation).
WEe, I deleted some files which were actually looking like shortcuts (had arrow below icons, like shortcuts) in C:Users (and directories in it), thinking that these shortcuts are just useless. And I think this somehow caused the problem. now I want to remove a few thing from my start screen and no option is appearing. Is there any way to manually remove them?
Same thing happens in the "detailed" start screen, the checkmark appears, but no menu to do anything.
So, now if I want to ensure that I am looking at hidden files, or have insight into protected OS files, I can no longer open explorer, click on Organize and click on Folder and Search Options.
I've found I have to open File Explorer, click on the View tab, find the Options button dropdown, and then choose "Change Folder and Search options".
This came up because I was trying to add a new taskbar. I right clicked on taskbar, select Toolbars, and choose New Toolbar From here, I get the "old school" explorer view (from Windows 7 without the ribbon), but the option under Organize for "Change Folder and search options" is grayed out. I thought it was just a dialog box limitation of the add toolbar wizard, so i went straight into File Explorer and failed to find the option. I actually had to Google it and figure out where they now moved the option to within the ribbon.
Running Windows 8 on my ASUS laptop and all of a sudden it has started opening all folders in a new window... every time without fail... even though the folder options are showing "Open in same window" selected.
For the record, I did try unselecting and then reselecting the same window option, applied it to all folders, rebooted my system... and nothing. Everything still opens in a new window every time.
Recently my taskbar has begun to obscure messages that appear and I can't click on the message now.
For example sometimes when I go to a website I would get a warning message saying this website wants to ....
Allow once or Allow Never. I'm pretty sure these used to appear above the taskbar now they are underneath it and I can't access the message to click on Once or Never.
Also I have a desktop programme that has certain options at the very bottom of the screen and now the taskbar won't let me access this either. I can see through the taskbar but can't action anything.
I was messing around with some bat files, and one was for disabling SmartScreen (I managed to turn it on again with another bat file), but now I can't change those options myself because they are grayed out .

I've recently upgraded to windows 8.1 and I noticed it has reverted all my language changes back to Chinese (Hong Kong). After redownloading and setting all the primary languages back to English in the control Panel I've realized that everything (even the login screen) is in English EXCEPT for some options in metro, how would you fully change this?

The "Skip x file(s) with the same date and size" option is nice, but I'd often like to skip files which only have the same size and the date may be the same or different - it's unimportant. Is there any way to do this? It would also be nice if, when copying a folder for example, it would display specifically which file was being transferred at the time.

I am trying to Boot from a USB Pen Drive on my Asus VivoTab running 8.1. There is no keyboard available in Trouble Shoot/Advanced Options UEFI Firmware Settings & Startup Settings. Screen or Asus Bluetooth keyboard.
BTW the 8.1 update went well. All my Desktop apps were preserved as well as Tablet.
Also, poking about in the Troubleshoot area it is possible to load a system image. Not found out how to make one yet !
A lot of rubbish seems to have been written about the 8.1 update.
