Lock Advanced Startup Options?

Sep 8, 2013

My Dell Latitude 10 tablet runs Windows 8. I have created a standard user account and want to forbid the user from accessing the "advanced startup options", which he might use to go to safe mode and reset my tablet. How can I do it?

Remove Boot Options From Advanced Startup?

Jan 18, 2014

I have three options in the Advanced Startup - Use a device menu that I believe are from the previous owner of this Surface Pro. I have ubuntu, linuxmint, and BestCrypt Volume Encryption. How can I remove those options since they do not apply to anything on this device?

I looked in msconfig and nothing but the normal Windows 8 is listed under the boot tab. Also only have the Windows 8 install listed when I run bcdedit.

Unable To Enter Advanced Startup Options

Jul 19, 2013

I have a multiboot scenario set up on my laptop, and I'm using the Windows 8 Graphical Bootloader to manage my other operating systems. I need to install two programs, GBridge, and Synaptics Touchpad Installer, and both use unsigned drivers. It seems Windows 8 doesn't ask for confirmation to install unsigned drivers like previous versions of Windows, it just outright denies them without user consent.

As a solution, I figured I would go to advanced startup options and disable driver signature enforcement like I did *successfully* for my Windows 8 desktop, but after it reboots to enter advanced startup mode, it just goes straight into Windows! No matter how many times I tell it to enter advanced startup mode, it refuses to do it. I even tried removing all my multiboot options and it still goes straight into Windows without asking me what I want to do.

For the record, I've tried it these ways:

Charms Menu -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> General -> (Advanced Startup Options) -> Reboot Now -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Startup Settings -> Restart (What a pain in the ass to have to navigate all this crap btw)
Choose an OS -> Other Options -> Advanced Startup Options
From legacy boot menu -> F8 -> Advanced Startup Options

All these attempts and methods achieve the same result: a normal reboot without giving the options of what advanced startup I want.

Dell :: Windows 8 - No Menu In Advanced Options (startup Settings) After Restart

May 8, 2014

I've got LATITUDE E7440 laptop with Win 8 Pro preinstalled. I need to disable driver signature enforcement in advanced options. I've read about how to do it in many places, but basically.. when I go to Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup SettingsĀ

And I push restart, menu for type of booting (below) doesn't appear. It just restarts as usual. Can I get to this menu in another way or why it doesn't appear?

I've got 4 laptops and this menu appeared only on one of them after restart. I've even reset it to its factory settings, but it didn't work out for me.

Options Missing From Power Options Advanced Settings?

Jul 28, 2014

I went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.

Copy Files Conflict Advanced Options?

Aug 18, 2013

Is there any sort of advanced options when a file conflict is encountered when copying files? The "Skip x file(s) with the same date and size" option is nice, but I'd often like to skip files which only have the same size and the date may be the same or different - it's unimportant. Is there any way to do this? It would also be nice if, when copying a folder for example, it would display specifically which file was being transferred at the time.

Tablets :: Keyboard Missing In 8.1 Advanced Options

Nov 9, 2013

I am trying to Boot from a USB Pen Drive on my Asus VivoTab running 8.1. There is no keyboard available in Trouble Shoot/Advanced Options UEFI Firmware Settings & Startup Settings. Screen or Asus Bluetooth keyboard.

BTW the 8.1 update went well. All my Desktop apps were preserved as well as Tablet.

Also, poking about in the Troubleshoot area it is possible to load a system image. Not found out how to make one yet !

A lot of rubbish seems to have been written about the 8.1 update.

Why Plan Settings And Advanced Power Options Configuration Differs From Each Other

May 20, 2014

Why Plan Settings and 'Advanced Power Options' configuration differs from each other?

My plan Settings sets the time to sleep with computer plugged in to 25minutes whereas the advanced power options has it on 180 minutes. Same applies to other options of the power options.

I was wondering what this mess is all about? I restored both to default and set the advanced to 'Never' and manually configure the Plan Settings.

Could Not Access Advanced Startup

Aug 10, 2013

I've had two computers in the last few weeks where i was unable to get to the Advanced Startup functions through Settings>Change PC Settings. On one machine, clicking Change PC Settings just kept giving a blank white screen. The other PC simply would not boot. (On one of those PC's I wanted to get to Safe Mode, on the other I was looking to Refresh or Reset the OS.)

I fixed both of them by restoring to factory original settings using the manufacturer's built in function, which was ok since there was not much configuration that had been done by the user.

But I am wondering if Microsoft has built in any other ways to access Safe Mode or Refresh/Reset when the usual method does not work. Can these be accessed through the recovery boot disk? If so, are there any tutorials on this?

Windows 8.1 Always Boots In Advanced Startup Menu?

Feb 9, 2014

Per this article below, I used the advanced startup menu in Win 8.1 to disable signed driver checking.Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers | Plugable

After I installed some unsigned Intel Usb 3.0 drivers, every time I shutdown and restart the machine from the old (Win 7) desktop, or the Metro UI, the machine now ALWAYS reboots/restarts with the Advanced startup menu.

Hardware Drivers :: Why Can't Use Keyboard In Advanced Startup

Aug 26, 2013

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 USB keyboard. When I restart Windows 8 using Advanced Startup Mode I get the familiar menu where you have to enter F1-F9 to select an option (or F10 for more options). My keyboard doesn't work, however. I tried pressing all of the F-keys but none of them are recognized.

I am pretty sure it's not a BIOS issue because whenever I do a cold boot I can get into the BIOS by pressing the DEL key so I know the keyboard is recognized by my system. why I can't use my keyboard in Windows 8 Advanced Startup?

Updates :: Refresh Using Windows Advanced Startup Settings - Failure To Configure Update

Jul 28, 2014

My Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.

This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".

Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't worked (it actually caused the issue). Running Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 3520.

I'm guessing full format needed? - Would a format resolve the issue, since a 'refresh' caused it?

HP 500-056 pre-installed Windows 8, 1 TB HDD, 8 GB RAM, UEFI: On Startup, I have to press the Num Lock key to enter numbers from the numeric keypad.

Intel DG33BU mobo, 4 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD vanilla BIOS: On Startup, the Num Lock key is active and I can immediately enter numbers from the numeric keypad.

Why this is happening, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be the difference between UEFI and BIOS.

Windows 8.1 Not Booting - Reset Button Takes To Startup Repair Options

Sep 28, 2013

I just recently installed 8.1 on my desktop. These are the specs:

ASUS M5A97 mobo
AMD phenom II X4 965 BE stock clocks
crossfire HD 7770's
8gb DDR3
500 tv sata internal hard drive 7200rpm.
500w psu.

The problem is, I'm not able to boot up my PC. When I boot, I get the Berta fish logo, with a white dash in the upper left corner. It will stay there and load for as long as I let it. If I hit my reset button then it will take me to the startup repair options. Booting into safe mode from there yields the same result. The only way I've managed to fix it was either a refresh or a system restore.

Windows 8 Lock Screen Stuck - Cursor / Num / Caps Lock Work

Jul 21, 2014

My laptop is a
Sony Vaio - Model: SVE141R11L
Product name: SVE14135CXB
Pre-loaded with Windows 8 x64
Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
6GB RAM w/ 900GB HDD space
Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly enough, when I unplugged the power cord, the HDD light flickered a little then disappeared, still no response - could be related to the PSU I suppose?

Another problem I faced before was the Windows 8.1 update failure, resulting in reverted changes, etc. I also had problems in the first few months of owning this, but found it was the incompatibility of an old antivirus that I guess didn't work too well with Windows 8 causing me to have to do a full wipe before. That was long ago. Moreover, the problems I have been experiencing have been unresponsiveness, from what I believe, are the fast boot Win 8 provides (but I turned that off), issues with Windows 8 not being able to load drivers from sleep mode upon opening the laptop (turned off automatic sleep), and now with the lock screen being stuck. I know my problems aren't detailed, but maybe these problems are linked to a bigger similar problem that people have been facing? My last bet would be to do a full factory restore/ repair, although I don't have a Windows 8 boot CD.

How To Access Advanced Chipset Settings

Feb 24, 2013

I've been wanting to access the Advanced Chipset Settings in Windows 8, but I simply can't find it. I looked online to see where it is, and I learned that it was in the BIOs. However, I couldn't find the BIOs so I searched a bit more and learned that it was replaced by the UEFI thing so I accessed that instead. However, the UEFI Startup thing (excuse my usage of "thing," what else to call it and leaving it hanging would be awkward) has very limited options so of course, it turns out that it doesn't have the Advanced Chipset Settings.

How to access the Advanced Chipset Settings in Windows 8? I'm really at a loss.

Network / Sharing :: Advanced Printer Setup Freezing?

When I open up the advanced printer setup window in the hardware & sound category of the control panel, it starts searching for printers and then freezes on that task. I cannot press the next, cancel, or quit ('x') button at the top right of the screen. This is a brand new laptop that I just got in today with some top of the line hardware for its class, and I am currently connected wirelessly to the same network that the printer is on, so there should be no issue as far as I'm aware of on the discovery of the printer.
