Windows Won't Start After 8.1 Update - Not Able To Boot In Safe Mode
May 12, 2014Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8. It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.
Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.
The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.
Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.
Msconfig Boot Settings Sat To Safe Mode - Forgot Password
Feb 11, 2014I've booted into safe mode in windows 8.1 by setting the safe mode option in msconfig..
However, when I booted into safemode i realized that I've forgot my password because i usually use a pincode.
How to I get it out of safe boot again? - I've tried to access command prompt, but everything needs that password.
Is there any way to force it to boot up normally again?
Updates :: Refresh Using Windows Advanced Startup Settings - Failure To Configure Update
Jul 28, 2014My Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.
This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".
Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't worked (it actually caused the issue). Running Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 3520.
I'm guessing full format needed? - Would a format resolve the issue, since a 'refresh' caused it?
Windows 8.1 Won't Boot Even Into Safe Mode?
Jan 6, 2014I can't boot into Windows 8.1 at all or even safe mode..I have tried startup repair etc etc ....I also tried the bcdedit trick to boot directly into Safe mode with the command prompt option no dice either..I would rather not do a refresh or reset pc..Matter of fact I have tried both options and even with a clean 8.1 disk I can't ....It gives me the error message remove cd or media and restart no matter whether i have the disk on or not. i think it might be a problem with the boot or something or its booting to the wrong device perhaps a USB ? i do have bitlocker on the drives and when i got to do a startup repair it asks for my key and i obv have it on other media which is my usb which won't read the key from it anymore..

Sep 11, 2013SVF1521P2EB from PC world.Trying to use a recovery program I always use for all my laptops and desktops and have created a bootable USB Stick and also a DVD bootable disk. Both disk and usb work on all other systems but this Sony Laptop.
Have USB stick in the usb2 port not the usb3 port due to compatibility issues with backup/restore on usb3. The stick is a usb2. I have gone into bios and set usb and also tried dvd as first boot device. Will not boot.
Have tried the assist button on the laptop and the restore (boot from dvd/usb media) also does not work, as stated these both work on other laptops and desktops.
I have tried to find the boot option menu or safe mode startup. I have tried this by pressing various buttons each time on boot usually F2, Del, esc, F12, F10 on other systems and also F8 which does not appear to enable the laptop to start with a manual boot.
All I seem to achieve is the Vaio screen and straight to Windows8.
I do see the sony recognise the usb as the green light is flashing, no message of boot failure.
1) What is the boot option at startup to manually select a boot device.
2) How to boot into safe mode.
3) How to possibly rid the boot up screen displaying the VAIO logo.
4) Get the Sony to recognise either the bottable dvd or usb to backup the system without using the sony or built in miscrosoft bootup.
Final result should be a full image backup of the hard drive ona an extarnal harddrive/usb stick for future restoration.
Can't Boot Into Safe Mode With Networking
Aug 17, 2014Win 8.1 Pro x64. Got to the safe mode screen with the nine choices for start up method. 5 or F5 is supposed to restart with networking, but the connection isn't happening. Attempts to make it bring message that I have to start Windows normally.

Aug 21, 2014One day, I rebooted, and then there was nothing. After Windows finished loading, there was naught but a black screen, and a cursor if I move the mouse quickly. This happens in safe mode as well, and on both my dedicated graphics card (an Asus AMD HD 6450 Silent) and my integrated graphics (Other than it is a Biostar A780L3G). When I try to refresh directly, with a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 installation media, it says it is invalid, despite it being x64, same as the installed version. When I try directly, it says the HDD is locked, and none of the guides I have followed to unlock it through the disk work. Also, I dont know if this matters or not, but when I try booting into safe mode, at first, when I move the mouse, in the corners, it says Safe Mode.

Dec 21, 2013I have an Asus CM6730 PC, bought in October, which had Windows 8 installed on it.
Everything was fine, until I decided to install the upgrade to Windows 8.1.
After a week or so, my mouse started to freeze up randomly and the only way to log out of the PC was by holding the power button down for several seconds. The next day, I was working on the PC, took a phone call and the machine went into standby mode - but wouldn't come back on when I press a key / moved mouse.
At that point I decided to restore the machine back to factory settings. This was done successfully so I was back to Windows 8. However - my problems have got worse - and now I am at the stage where the PC wont even boot up in Safe Mode - the screen just goes black.
I have read up on a few sites and I believe it could anything from driver related - to a faulty motherboard.
Screen Greyed In Normal Mode But Vibrant In Safe Mode
Jan 2, 2014My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.
When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.
How To Access Advanced Chipset Settings
Feb 24, 2013I've been wanting to access the Advanced Chipset Settings in Windows 8, but I simply can't find it. I looked online to see where it is, and I learned that it was in the BIOs. However, I couldn't find the BIOs so I searched a bit more and learned that it was replaced by the UEFI thing so I accessed that instead. However, the UEFI Startup thing (excuse my usage of "thing," what else to call it and leaving it hanging would be awkward) has very limited options so of course, it turns out that it doesn't have the Advanced Chipset Settings.
How to access the Advanced Chipset Settings in Windows 8? I'm really at a loss.

May 8, 2014I've got LATITUDE E7440 laptop with Win 8 Pro preinstalled. I need to disable driver signature enforcement in advanced options. I've read about how to do it in many places, but basically.. when I go to Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup Settings
And I push restart, menu for type of booting (below) doesn't appear. It just restarts as usual. Can I get to this menu in another way or why it doesn't appear?
I've got 4 laptops and this menu appeared only on one of them after restart. I've even reset it to its factory settings, but it didn't work out for me.

May 20, 2014Why Plan Settings and 'Advanced Power Options' configuration differs from each other?
My plan Settings sets the time to sleep with computer plugged in to 25minutes whereas the advanced power options has it on 180 minutes. Same applies to other options of the power options.
I was wondering what this mess is all about? I restored both to default and set the advanced to 'Never' and manually configure the Plan Settings.

I was trying to get AMD drivers working properly so that FIFA would stop crashing. I read somewhere that installing the latest AMD Catalyst Beta with separate Intel drivers would work. I tried that, rebooted, and now I have a black screen after the Windows splash logo, with my mouse pointer visible if I move my mouse. So clearly something went wrong with the graphics driver installation.
No problem, I'll just simply boot into safe mode, uninstall the drivers, and experiment with some other drivers.But no. F8 doesn't work, I know. Shift-F8 doesn't either. So I got my installation media, surely there would be a way to boot into safe mode with it!
Here's what I get.
There's supposed to be a 'Startup Options' button here, but for SOME reason, it's not. I have no clue what to do. I cannot fathom HOW Microsoft managed to make booting into SAFE MODE such a puzzle for an end user.
Some more background: After a similar graphics driver adventure last week, I got into safe mode (phew), tried to uninstall AMD drivers. I got an error about how this the installer cannot run in safe mode (what?!). I tweak some registry key to get it working. It failed to uninstall properly. I rebooted, and then I was absolutely unable to get OUT OF safe mode. Nothing I did changed that, each and every time Windows booted to safe mode.
I can't remember the last time I had such a bad experience with a Microsoft product. backing up files in my C: drive and simply installing regular Windows 8 over this. BUT I can't access my C: drive via Ubuntu because Windows has LOCKED that partition because of it's fast-boot nonsense.
