I was messing around with some bat files, and one was for disabling SmartScreen (I managed to turn it on again with another bat file), but now I can't change those options myself because they are grayed out .

In my pictures folder, as well as all other folders that I have checked, the option to change the icon size larger or smaller is grayed out.
Solutions I have found use the options to change settings, however, my options are also grayed out so I can't.

I have a directory that contains about a hundred batch files, each which starts up a ssh terminal connected to a different server. When I run one, I get the "SmartScreen" message saying that Windows is preventing an unrecognized app from starting. I can click "more info" to run it anyway, and from then on it'll run as it should. I'm hoping there's a way to select all the files at once and disable SmartScreen for them.
I know I can disable SmartScreen altogether, but it seems like it could be preferable to leave it on, as it might be protecting my system from malware and what not. I guess if that's the only way to easily get all apps I want to use to not be blocked, that's what I'll have to do.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.
While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.
Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.
I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.

I was playing a game on my laptop and decided to switch from wifi to ethernet. I plugged in the ethernet and turned off the wifi switch to ensure it switched over, but later when I tried to turn wifi back on, I see the wifi on/off switch is grayed out.
I went to my device manager to check for wifi network adapter driver updates, but everything seemed pretty up to date.
Any recommendations on how to fix this? Or at the least another method of turning the wifi on, like through command prompt or something?
I need to email scanned copies of different things. I can scan them ok, but I am having a hard time emailing them. I have tried setting up my gmail account in the scan setting window with no luck. With another program (paper port) I could just drag the file into the email - this won't work in the windows fax and scan program.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had Hyper-V and Ubuntu running on Windows 8 no problem. I've since done a fresh install to 8.1, and I can no longer create an External Virtual Switch. The button for "Create Virtual Switch" is grayed out when I select "External". I can create Internal and Private switches, but not External. There's no error or message so I'm having difficulty troubleshooting. All of the tutorials I've seen don't talk about any configuration I would need to do before creating an external switch. I have the default Windows 8.1 firewall and antivirus stuff.

I'm not really sure why it couldn't find my physical network adapter, since it shows up with the Get-NetAdapter command.
My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.

Which registry settings should I change to set the top two default Windows rules back to 'Unrestricted' ?
I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)
Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!
Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up
I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:
Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.
Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...
I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

o.k. long story short before installing 8.1.1 in my real environment i tested it out extensively in vm. i found out that if you get past a certain point with the windows updates bitdefender will not install, if you install bd prior to a certain point it installs and works great even after you do the rest of the windows updates. How to get it installed and working correctly in a fully updated 8.1.1? i have eset smart security in, but i'd rather have my bitdefender.
I am running 8.1, and firefox 25. I can't download or run Avast, or download any executables, suddenly. I lowered my security settings to Medium and added Avast to the firewall permissions, but to no avail. My download settings were already at "prompt" anyway, so there's something deeper I can't figure out. I'm a reasonably competent generalist but not super computer smart.

I just noticed that when I go to the Power Options that the options are missing. It says the Power Plan is missing or unavailable or something such. One answer said to do a refresh or reset of Windows 8. Isn't that a bit drastic? Is there no way to do it by tweaks. I did that refresh once and lost more than I thought I was supposed to.

I want to remove all options except for Hiragana and Full-Width Katakana and set it so that when I change my language to Japanese it automatically sets to Hiragana. Similarly with Korean how do I remove the alphanumeric and leave only the korean language option? Secondly, is there a button is can use to fluidly tag between language options within an language? So for instance, if I'm in Japanese is there a combination of buttons to press such that I can change between Hiragana and Full-Width Katakana?

However, when I enable CSM boot it gives me option of booting into my systems. I want to restore my Fast Boot options so my laptop boots up faster and basically because my laptop is made for Fast Boot.

Since i did a fresh reinstall of Win 8 64 i have never been able to change the folder view options. Example; I am in a windows explorer window, everything is displayed as a large icon (yuk), i right click go to view and change to details. I then click 'view' on the toolbar and click options, I then navigate to the 'View' tab whereby my intention is to apply the 'detailed' view to all explorer windows in future yet both fields are greyed out (the 'Apply to Folders' and 'Rest Folders').
It has never been usable since this fresh install (ie on previous versions of win 8 installs i recall it working, but not this one, ie its not a recent problem, has always been like this).
I have win 8.1 x64 Core installed.The thing is, i want to remove some items from my start screen and right clicking does not bring up any menu (which it used to on my previous win 8.1, this is new installation).
WEe, I deleted some files which were actually looking like shortcuts (had arrow below icons, like shortcuts) in C:Users (and directories in it), thinking that these shortcuts are just useless. And I think this somehow caused the problem. now I want to remove a few thing from my start screen and no option is appearing. Is there any way to manually remove them?
