Windows 8 - Internal Sata Drives In Safely Remove Hardware
Jan 18, 2013
There was a registry fix for this problem as here:
How can I remove the option to eject SATA drives from the Windows 7 tray icon? - Super User
In Windows 8, though, the registry is different, as there is no msahci under services as here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesmsahci

I did an upgrade (admittedly, too lazy to want to reinstall all my programs) from 7 ultimate to 8 Pro (both x64) and now only one of my DVD-RW drives shows up in computer or device manager, and scanning for hardware doesn't work. The drive does show in the BIOS however.

I'm unable to 'Safely remove' or 'Eject' external USB 3.0 drives (I have 2) on my Lenovo Thinkpad running Wndows 8.1 without having the computer claim that the drive needs to be scanned for errors when the drive is reconnected to the same laptop or attached to my desktop PC's.
When I connect the same drives to my desktop PC's USB3 ports I initially get the same "scan for errors" prompt. But any further attaching and removal of the same drives to either my Windows 7(64) and Vista (64) dsktop PCs's does not reproduce the same error and further safe removal and reconnecting to those 2 systems is error free.
When scanned for errors there has never been any errors discovered. The 2.5" drives (one Seagate the other WD) are in Vantec USB 3.0 external enclosures that use a '2x USB plugs' cable; one for data and one for power. My usual removal method is to click on the 'Windows Explorer Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' icon on the Taskbar and select Eject for the drive and then wait until the 'Safe to remove' message pops up before removing the single cable attached to the external enclosure.
The USB Controllers are:
Intel(R) Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Coltroller - 1E26
Intel(R) Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Coltroller - 1E2D
Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)
I unsuccessfully tried updating the Intel(R) Series/C216 Chipset controller to v9.4.0.126 but it's still at v9.3.0.1011.
If it's a USB 3.0 driver/firmware related, or a 'feature' of Windows 8.1?
I can live with the problem as I'm sure that the drive is not being removed while data is being written, and Indexing is disabled on external drives. But I prefer using a computer that does not exhibit these sort of problems.

I've seen in a few forum posts that you can change the value of this registry entry:
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAppletsSysTrayServices
to various values to add or remove items that will trigger the Safely Remove Hardware icon from the Systray of the Taskbar. The default value is
REG_DWORD 0x1f
what the valid values are and what they control.
For instance, setting it to 27 (0x1b) remove the sound volume control icon.

I was wondering is there any way to increase the data transfer rate on SATA drives. My MB has SATA 3 and I have a Samsung HD 154UI drive on SATA /300 where I have Windows 8 x64 installed. The performance under Windows is 5.9. This is the lowest on the list. CPU 7.4, Memory 7.4, Graphics 7.9, Gaming graphics 7.9, Hard disk 5.9...Is there a way to get it higher without replacing the drive. The drive is new (only 3 months old) I have two of these drives and two Seagate drives that are 2 tera which are 1 year old.

Up until today, whenever I had a USB flash drive connected and I wanted to remove it I would click the icon in the System tray for "Safely remove hardware and eject media" and then my drive letter would be shown and I'd click on it to safely remove it. I am running Windows 8.1 and today when I click on the icon to remove the USB flash, all I see are three dots which do nothing. Above the 3 dots ... is the normal Open Devices and Printers. how to get the drive letters to appear instead of the 3 dots?

I have question: Could I use my external hard drive (removed from it's casing obviously) and replace my internal hard drive with it?
Here's more context: I recently bought a Kingston V300 120GB SSD to replace my old HDD in my laptop and give it a boost. Performance is noticeably faster (the fresh install of Win 8.1 might have worked too) but the 120GB are filling up quite fast however.
As I was running my defrag program to check if any external drives needed defragging I was surprised to see that my 1TB USB 3.0 Toshiba Stor.E Basics showed up as an SSD along with my Kingston (and thus no need to defrag ). So I asked myself, could I use that drive as my internal drive instead of the Kingston?
My questions are:
- Will it work?
- If yes, does it need to be configured in any way first?
- Would there be compatibility issues? My laptop is SATA 2 and I guess the drive in the Toshiba would be SATA 3.
- Would read/write speeds maybe be too slow to run the computer properly?

How do I slave a hard drive on my Windows 8 Computer?
I had the hard drive slaved to my xp and it was fine, I plug it in to Windows 8 and it doesn't recognize it. Plug it back into the XP and it shows up fine. I'm not really experienced with this, I'm used to just hooking the hard drive up and booting up with XPs and it knows there's another HD available for storage, is the process different with windows 8? is there something specific I need to do to get it to recognize the HD?

I am setting up a new computer with Windows 8.1. I have added a 6TB second drive to the system that I am putting my Files on. I want only the Admin username to have access to this drive and block other users (other users are my kids).
Is blocking other users as simple as going to the security tab and remove "Users(XXUsers)" and just leave Authenticated Users, System, and Administrators? Should I add in this admin username too?

I have a custom built system running Windows 8. I recently changed the Sata port config, changing one of my drives to another port that was supposed to be for a case esata port. After this, my hard drives would not work together and the computer would randomly crash when I try to access My Computer or anything that makes the hard drives run. It's really hard to use as my programs/files are spread across these three drives.
Specs:
CPU: Core i5 3570K
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
RAM: Samsung DDR3-1600 RAM
GFX Card: GTX 580
SSD: 120GB Mushkin Chronos (boot drive)
HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda
HDD: 1TB Seagate Pipeline HD
PSU: Corsair CX600 V2

Thought this was problem - Microsoft writes "When you resume a computer from sleep or from hibernation, the SATA hard disk drivers require the SATA hard disks to be ready within 10 seconds. However, a large SATA hard disk may take longer than 10 seconds to be ready. In this situation, the resume operation times out." in their fix for W7 - You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk
Have tried a variety of things like checking all current drivers, turning off hybrid sleep, power troubleshooter, windows update and the like on instruction but my ASUS p7p55d-e doesn't seem to have any Windows 8 specific drivers.
boot drive C: (partitioned into two logical drives)
Attached dump files as instructed.

I'am trying 8 hours now to install Windows 8 to an Acer Aspire 5920g.
Problem is that when the usb flash drive comes to hdd presenation point the hdd isnt being displayed.
My guess is that Sata AHCI/IDE controller driver for the 5920g's chipset is missing from Windows 8 installation dvd.
I googled very much and i can only find XP and Vista Sata Drivers while oi need 8's.
Is there an alternative? I must get 8 installed in that laptop.

After 5 years of use, my college laptop (Windows Vista) finally gave up on me a couple of months ago. Each time at start up, it would automatically go to the blue screen of death and never get past that point. I wound up getting a new laptop (ASUS S500CA) operating on windows 8, and now I'm attempting to recover some of my files from the old hard drive. After a little reading, I discovered that you can pull the old drive, connect it to another computer via a USB cable, and attempt to recover the data on the drive. So I ran down to the local best buy and picked up an Apricorn SATA Wire. Here's the problem. Every time I hook the hard drive up to the computer via the USB wire, my computer instantly goes to a blue screen and goes into a cycle of restarting itself over and over. Does this mean that my old hard drive is just too far gone to recover, or is there another method that I can try?

How to boot either from extrnal drive or from bootable CDR.
On my previous system this was quite straightforward, in BIOS I could specify boot media lookup order buthere I'm quite clueless, although here's still media type order table but no more hard drives lookup order so Windows 8 bootloader persistently ignores my grub4dos bootable partition on external drive, which was with Windows 7 system perfectly booting.
It looks like on new system external hard drives are ranked under "USB" devices unlike on old system where it ranked under hard drives. So despite I put USB drives here a highest booting priority and despite that BIOS correctly identifies my connected xternal drive, it for some reason either won't boot or is ignored. Any resolution or setup guide for this. Btw. EasyBCD won't work at all (maybe because I selected this external drive as default booting disc for a while and now is inaccessible from Windows UI).

Why is one of my four internal hard drives listed as a Portable Device in Device Manager?
Removing it from Portable Devices does not remove it from Disk Drives and then it all looks normal and functions normal, until I scan devices or Windows reboots.
It also functions normal when it is listed in both spots, Disk Drives and Portable Devices, just annoys the hell out of me me that one drive is listed under Portable Devices, I want it gone from there.

make the 'file history' feature work. I keep getting the 'No usable drives were found' message along with a recommendation to use an external hard drive. My PC rig has a 240GB SSD (C drive) and a 1TB HDD (D drive) - both internal obviously - but I don't quite understand why there's no way to use the D drive to make a complete backup copy of both the system and the Documents folder, etc. that are on the C drive. I clicked here and there and somehow ended up creating a backup copy (a folder called "WindowsImageBackup") on the D drive but that seems to be a copy of the Windows system only and excludes the Documents folder. how to make the file history work so as to make the complete backup on the D drive?

I've got an old 750 GB HDD (SATA) which will be fine for file serving (multi-media). It's got the standard SATA connectors (both the small one (data) and the power connector but it's ALSO got the 4 pin power connectors that you get with older IDE drives (Molex ??)
Do I need to connect BOTH power sockets or just ignore the older 4-pin IDE type connector.
Not sure why they needed BOTH power connectors -- maybe this drive might have been used also for making external HDD's at one time.
I'm minded just to connect the two SATA cables and ignore the other one.

I have 3 disks in my computer, of which 2 are SSDs.
I swapped the SATA ports between one SSD and the HDD so as to give the SSD a SATA port with maximum 6gb/s transfer speed, and now the access to the HDD is denied. The drive letters are correct, as they should be.
The user (myself, admin) did not change.
What can be done about it? I already tried to check the ownership of the drive and says STEVECOMPUTER/Administrators, which looks good, as my user account is an admin. Still, I have no access.

My windows 7 computer crashed and I took out the hard drive and placed it in the enclosure. I connected it to my windows 8 computer and it sees the drive, says it is working properly, but everything moves in slow motion. To download some pics back to my other computer it will take 17 hours. I can see my files, but every folder takes a long time to open up. I also made sure all drivers are updated and I have all the windows updates, etc.I also receive a permission notice a lot and I click continue, but that takes forever to change the ownership file by file as well.

However I am experiencing problems with the sound. It just doesn't appear to be working, despite the volume being turned up to the max. The problem usually fixes itself briefly after a restart but it then cuts out after time.
None of the playback devices are muted. When I try testing the speakers, I get an error message saying "Device in Use: Please close any applications using this device for playing audio" - however, there doesn't appear to be any device using the speakers.
I have recently started using an HDMI cable to use my laptop through my TV

I've installed 8.1 on a PC from the store and then one of my three internal drives, my data drive, would intermittently connect / disconnect. I was not able to find a solution so I recovered my Win 8.0 installation from a backup and now everything works well again. I'll try to reinstall Win 8.1 in a few weeks - suspect it's a bug that Microsoft will eventually squash. I also Installed 8.1 on two laptops from the store with no problems - however they do not have additional internal drives.
