Windows 8.1 - System Font Size Decreased After Update
Aug 14, 2014
My system font size in Windows 8.1 decreased after the update. I had to go into Display settings and manually increase the size of the font in each category from 9 to 10.
Unfortunately, I don't know what the default size was before. I just know that after the update my system fonts appeared visibly smaller.

Using Windows 8.1 for the first time.
Toshiba Laptop
(1) How to increase the font size of Windows Explorer?
(2) Is it possible to put in folder, file name in the TaskBar? I can pin applications like Ms Word, Power point but not any specific file or folder which I am using.
(3) The time in the task bar is showing as 23:34.How can I make it to 11:34?
(4) Like Windows XP is it possible to bring in a kind of a "Show Desktop" in the task bar so that I can quickly move into the Desktop from a current window.

I have increased my DPI to 250% to be able to read stuff in Windows without getting headache. Is there a way of increasing font size of start menu items as well?
And what about text size of items when alt tabbing, text size of charms bar (win+C) and text size of settings (win+i).
It seems to me that instead of improving the good old features of the older versions, Microsoft suddenly decided to replace them with lots of crap instead, not taking into account that there are people out there who don't have the eagle eye vision.

Right now the color (white) blends in way too much with everything else on the page, so that it is very difficult to even see the category titles.

Is there a way to change the font size in incoming messages? I don't mean by using a screen magnifier or anything like that, but by setting an option that presents all incoming mail in the selected font.

I have looked through the forum for tips on my minor problem and I hope I can explain what is happening. Whenever or whatever web page I am viewing and I slide the 'touchpad' mouse pointer/cursor across the page the font sometimes increases or decreases in size, i,e, from 100% to 105% or 150% or 50%. I think I am putting too much force onto the touchpad.
My question is:- is there an easy way to stop the font from changing? apart from being more gentle on the touchpad.

I can't seem to find where you can increase the size of the fonts used within the tiles on the start menu in 8.1. Is it possible to do, and if so, where would I do it at?

I don't know what to call the system feedback I'm getting in an unreadable font. It's what comes up in the lower left of the screen when you hover over one of the format-change buttons here on the message edit box.
I want to change this font to something I can read.

Windows 8 comes with a whole lot of fonts pre-installed, quite a few of which I do not need and are merely cluttering up the place. I would especially like to get rid of the specialised fonts for Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic, Indian etc, etc & so 4th.
However, for many of them, when I try to delete them, I get the message that they are "protected system fonts". Surely, there aren't that many system fonts? Can we not get rid of or hide these fonts any more? Surely they are an unnecessary drain on resources, and boot-time extenders?

previously i was using windows 7 home basic 64bit OS. My battery used to give an average backup of about 2 hours. But since the time i have installed windows 8,it gives a backup of hardly an hour. I have checked all the settings in the control panel. They are all fine and proper. The fan keeps making a buzzing sound all the time, even when the CPU usage is low. This was not the case earlier. Also, my laptop is getting heated up more compared to before. What shall i do? What steps shall i take?

I have a Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO and would like to use it to perform a clean install on a system which supports UEFI Secure Boot but has no optical drive. What would be the best way to approach this?
WIMBoot would be nice to have as well, if there's a way to do it without making things too complicated.

Serious problem after 8.1 update from windows 8. My Dell notebook won't sleep when idled or lid closed, nor will it shutdown. The screen turns black, and the LED blacklight and fan are still on and cannot revert to normal mode unless I do a hard reset.
Updated to latest drivers and windows update, to no avail. Checked sleep and power options, and they're still the same as before.

Not knowing it would cause problems for me later, I setup a home built computer with a symbolic link for the Users folder from my SSD drive (system drive C) to Drive D. When I found I couldn't update to Windows 8.1 I did some research and discovered I should not have used this method for moving the Users folder and I need to move it back first in order to update.
After doing some research, I decided to follow the knowledge base article found at [URL] .... as my guide to move it back to the system drive. I have started this process and I'm part way through but I have encountered a problem that I can't figure out how to solve.
I booted into safe mode with a command prompt and deleted the symbolic link on my C drive. I followed the instructions in the article to use robocopy to copy the Users folder from my D drive to my system drive but it fails because some system files (like ntuser.dat) can't be copied (presumably because they contain the system info for the account I'm logged into so I am locked out).
I'm not really sure how to get around this and I don't think I'd be able to reboot and get into my system right now unless maybe I recreate the symbolic link from the system drive to d:users.

I have some old software that still runs fine on Windows 8 but with one exception in the way *some* Fonts are being handled.
The old software uses "MS Sans Serif" which is not a TrueType font. Up until win7 this was fine as the font displayed well. In Windows 8, it is skinny stick characters and n some cases, barely readable.
What I would like to do is to make a copy of the "Microsoft Sans Serif" which is a TT Font and copy it to the "MS Sans Serif," over-writing it so that both Fonts will have different file-names but the same contents. Then when the old app runs next time, I will again be able to see stuff.
Problem is when I tried to copy the Font in the Font Folder I got a message "Only a trusted installer can do this."

Never got the chance yet to download windows 8.1 preview but I'm interested to know if it introduced any thing new to the font smoothing technology which is bad looking and not as sharp when compared to e.g. to OS X. I tested the original windows 8 in a virtual machine and I didn't endure how fonts look on it overall whether I'm using the OS itself or using applications like Office 2013.

I am using windows 8.1 x64, not activated (could be related??) and I was having issues for the last 2 weeks.
I couldn't get windows started until I restore my system to the last restore point. Then I had to reinstall few of the programs I had installed the day before to get back to normal again.
But there was a point, something I did that it broke windows again, and i had to restore my system again!! like this 5 times :S
Then i finally realized that there was a thing that i was doing always and i was doing it always before windows stopped working.
I am working with a prototyping tool for Android and i have to install the Android official font (Roboto), which i downloaded from here: developer.android.com/design/style/typography.html, and I copy paste it in c:windowsFonts.
Last time Windows wouldn't start I run a Linux live DVD and i deleted from Linux the Roboto fonts from c:windowsFonts. I tried to start Windows and it worked! so I am pretty sure all the trouble was with this fonts. But I need to work with this fonts!

Any way to customise windows explorer columns to show folder size as well as file size and also change font colour dependent upon a category.
For example in my music folder I have 2 artists that contain adult mp3's so just to remind myself I would like their names to be say red. Also I have some empty folders as I have not yet obtained the albums and those would be say blue.
Example of what I am after :
Artist Album Size Auto Date Time Kevin Wilson 371.61MB 08.05.2014 19:46:45 5PP 54.85 MB 08.05.2014 19:47:10 Barefoot Man 637.87 MB 08.05.2014 19:47:28 Barron Knights 64.80 MB 08.05.2014 19:47:29 Benny Hill 324.99 MB 08.05.2014 19:47:41 Dick Jonas 746.45 MB 08.05.2014 19:48:16
[Code] ....
If it can not be done in Explorer how do I replace Explorer with a replacement file manager.

Can I change hardware and improve font rendering in Windows 8?
Text on Windows 8 looks pretty awful on my hardware. I'm using an Nvidia 550ti card and a Dell U2410 monitor. Text, in browsers and in the Windows GUI, is spindly, pixellated, and headache-inducing. Evidence? Look at msn.com in IE10 and then look at it on a Mac, or boot a live Ubuntu DVD and take a look.
So... I see frequent assertions that my 24-inch 1920x1200 monitor lacks the DPI to render fonts correctly in Windows (it's 96 DPI). I also see frequent assertions that I need to use a different video card.
I'd buy new hardware in a flash if I knew it would solve this problem.
Would a new monitor and/or a new video card improve the looks of text in Windows 8?
Should I maybe look for a 15-inch FHD laptop that crams a lot of pixels into a small space?

How would I set up Windows 8 so that I can edit the `path` environment variable in a fixed pitch font such as `Console` or `Lucida Console`? I don't want to change the font for other parts of Windows - only where paths are displayed. It seems I've been doing this in a terribly inappropriate font for many years and semicolons aren't great.
