Text on Windows 8 looks pretty awful on my hardware. I'm using an Nvidia 550ti card and a Dell U2410 monitor. Text, in browsers and in the Windows GUI, is spindly, pixellated, and headache-inducing. Evidence? Look at msn.com in IE10 and then look at it on a Mac, or boot a live Ubuntu DVD and take a look.
So... I see frequent assertions that my 24-inch 1920x1200 monitor lacks the DPI to render fonts correctly in Windows (it's 96 DPI). I also see frequent assertions that I need to use a different video card.
I'd buy new hardware in a flash if I knew it would solve this problem.
Would a new monitor and/or a new video card improve the looks of text in Windows 8?
Should I maybe look for a 15-inch FHD laptop that crams a lot of pixels into a small space?

i already using my windows with scaling up icons, texts, by changing registry values.
but still, texts and tiles on metro UI is not changed, it still is in small size.
To make these tile's font size bigger, what can i do?

May 27, 2014my Skyrim just suddenly froze, and in a panic, I started to press alt F4 a lot, then I gave up, so I just signed out, but then when I signed back in, the text was white and there's no more fade in and out for metro and applications when I minimize/maximize them.

Windows 8 64-bit Computer - Some Of Characters On Special Fonts (TTF) Do Not Show
Sep 5, 2013I have a number of special fonts (all are .ttf) that I installed, and some that came with software for use with the programs. All of these fonts worked fine when installed on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.
I have installed all of these fonts on my Windows 8 64-bit computer, and some of the characters on the fonts do not show. Windows has substituted other characters in place of these.
Yet when I open the font in a third party program like Font Creator, all of the characters on the font appear true.
Is there a setting in Windows 8 that I need to adjust so the characters will show as they are supposed to?

Oct 24, 2013I have a lot of files who are stored into folders (~ 2-3K worth of folders with 2-20 files in each folder) and I need to search in each one to see if there are any files that are similar in name. None will be exactly the same so I need to only compare the first 10 characters and if there are 2 files that have the same characters, then I need to have them displayed so I can decide if I should delete one. The problem with commercial duplicate detectors is they match the entire name or the CRC of a file which in this case will be different.

How To Copy A Font In Windows 8
Aug 22, 2013I have some old software that still runs fine on Windows 8 but with one exception in the way *some* Fonts are being handled.
The old software uses "MS Sans Serif" which is not a TrueType font. Up until win7 this was fine as the font displayed well. In Windows 8, it is skinny stick characters and n some cases, barely readable.
What I would like to do is to make a copy of the "Microsoft Sans Serif" which is a TT Font and copy it to the "MS Sans Serif," over-writing it so that both Fonts will have different file-names but the same contents. Then when the old app runs next time, I will again be able to see stuff.
Problem is when I tried to copy the Font in the Font Folder I got a message "Only a trusted installer can do this."

Jun 30, 2013Never got the chance yet to download windows 8.1 preview but I'm interested to know if it introduced any thing new to the font smoothing technology which is bad looking and not as sharp when compared to e.g. to OS X. I tested the original windows 8 in a virtual machine and I didn't endure how fonts look on it overall whether I'm using the OS itself or using applications like Office 2013.

Oct 21, 2013I am using windows 8.1 x64, not activated (could be related??) and I was having issues for the last 2 weeks.
I couldn't get windows started until I restore my system to the last restore point. Then I had to reinstall few of the programs I had installed the day before to get back to normal again.
But there was a point, something I did that it broke windows again, and i had to restore my system again!! like this 5 times :S

I am working with a prototyping tool for Android and i have to install the Android official font (Roboto), which i downloaded from here: developer.android.com/design/style/typography.html, and I copy paste it in c:windowsFonts.
Last time Windows wouldn't start I run a Linux live DVD and i deleted from Linux the Roboto fonts from c:windowsFonts. I tried to start Windows and it worked! so I am pretty sure all the trouble was with this fonts. But I need to work with this fonts!

May 10, 2014Any way to customise windows explorer columns to show folder size as well as file size and also change font colour dependent upon a category.
For example in my music folder I have 2 artists that contain adult mp3's so just to remind myself I would like their names to be say red. Also I have some empty folders as I have not yet obtained the albums and those would be say blue.

Windows 8.1 - System Font Size Decreased After Update
Aug 14, 2014My system font size in Windows 8.1 decreased after the update. I had to go into Display settings and manually increase the size of the font in each category from 9 to 10.
Unfortunately, I don't know what the default size was before. I just know that after the update my system fonts appeared visibly smaller.

Jun 14, 2012I installed my collection of fonts last night and since then the images (or maybe they're a kind of font?) in the menu bar in the start menu have gone missing and have been replaced by rectangles (which leads me to believe its a font problem). These weird rectangles have also replaced the arrows on scrollbars, the search button in the start menu... pretty much any kind of button in the Metro interface. I did not remove, rename, overwrite, or delete any existing fonts to my knowledge. take a look at my attached pic.
Is there any way to fix this or am I going to have to do *another* refresh?
Changing Font Of Desktop Elements
Dec 5, 2013I observe Windows 8 use different font now and I can't find the old fashioned dialog for detailed customizing all desktop elements like it was used up to Windows 7. The display control panel only offers change size on couple of basic elements. Also, any hint turning off smooth scrolling of list and combo boxes, it's annoying slow.

Nov 12, 2013Last night I downloaded the font Roboto (used by Google for their Android UI) and all of the weights installed properly, except for the Regular and Regular Italic weights. Trying to re-install the weights prompts a query if I want to replace them. Under the Control Panel's Fonts area, there are two ghost-like icons that would indicate the presence of the missing weights, and when I check for the fonts using "localhostc$WindowsFonts" I see them there (all copies). Furthermore, despite being the Administrator of my computer, I can't seem to delete them from this area. All my hidden files are turned on, so I'm not sure what else to do.

I tried changing the name of the file, and I tried restarting the system....both no success.
Edit - Actually found out there there are more files doing this, and not just the font file.
