Win 8 Pause Connecting To LAN PCs
Jul 4, 2013
I have 3 PC's - all Windows 8 32bit and all networked on a small hard wired LAN.
Quite often when opening a folder on one of the remote PC's there is a 3-4 second pause whilst a "connection" is made? It doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it's instant and sometimes even opening a local folder has this pause!
I'm sure this didn't happen when they were all Windows 7?
Each PC has a username and password and they always remember their credentials so it's a bit of a mystery?

Windows 8.1, Toshiba Satellite L745
It was originally windows 7, then I upgrade to 8, then the 8.1 preview evaluation copy. I think I started having sound issues when I went to 8.1. I will play for a couple minutes then cut out. If I pause for a few seconds then play the sound works for a few more minutes. The sound works fine when I'm using HDMI to the television or on headset. Could there be a hardware/motherboard issue since it's the speakers that are cutting out? Could it be an 8.1 issue?

I want the volume popup bar with the track title information for Windows Media Player, is this possible, perhaps with a registry edit?
I mainly notice it in gMusic app and I've seen the Pandora app have it as well (Whenever I hit the pause button, it will pop up with album art, artist and track info as well as a volume slider) ...
I mainly use Windows Media Player for music though so I'd like this cool feature for that program, it would be very handy when I'm playing a game and I don't want to alt+tab out just to see what song is playing ...

I know that iTunes isn't available for Windows RT and I would think that this would be a big problem for most people, but I can't find much info about it (complaints, solutions, etc.).
Is there any other way to sync music with my iPod? With all the other hacks and ways to bypass things on RT I'm surprised that I haven't heard of anything.

I have a HP Envy laptop running on Windows 8.1 (did not update. it came with it)
I have never had a problem connecting my house's internet network.
However, today i woke up, i turn on or restart the PC. it was already on, and i tried using the internet, i wasn't connected.
I lsearched for my wifi network. didn't find it.
Restarted the PC and tried disabling and then re-enabling the adapter, still couldn't find it.
Rebooted the router. nothing happened. I even reset the router and still couldn't find it. (firmware up to date) (Netgear)
This only happens to my Windows 8 PC. All other devices (PCs, Phones and tablets...even the TV) are working fine wirelessly.
That's why i posted this on Windows 8. The PC works perfectly using an ethernet cable.

I brought my laptop to work and wanted to connect to my work's network so I could access our shared networks. In the past I was able to log into my work's domain, nahrc, with my user name and password via the ctrl+alt+dlt method fromt he log on screen. I can plug in the ethernet cable into my laptop, and the nahrc network appears in the wired connections area, but I can't seem to connect/access our shared drives. Is it possible to log into my laptop like you could in windows 7 and access my account, or is this just not possible anymore.

I've Windows 8 Pro, I've enabled the Hyper-V and I've created two VM's. One is a WinXP and the other is a Win7. They seem to be working fine, however I can't connect to the internet with them or view them on my lan. I've tried using Legacy network Adapters, network adapters, googled to find people saying things like there's issues with my physical network setup...

I'm getting the below BSOD when connecting and using the internet at my new apartment after few minutes (usually after 10mins but sometimes less or more than that). This is not happening at my work or when using any other wireless networks.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (wfplwfs.sys)
I'm not sure if it matters but the connection at my apartment is kind of weird... I just followed the instructions to connect to a wireless network first and then setup another broadband PPPoE connection.
Please see attached SFdebugFiles.

I have a Netgear WN111 wireless adapter on my PC. Since installing Windows 8.1 it doesn't connect automatically to the router. The PC says there are no connections available, so I can't even click on the router to try to connect. If I pull the adapter out and push it back into the USB port it connects automatically. Also, when I switch the PC off, the LED on the adapter continues to flash, so I have to pull it out and plug it in again to stop that. I've tried troubleshooting, compatibility check, reinstalling the driver and uninstalling the driver and getting Windows to install one itself.

After i updated to Windows 8.1 Enterprise from Windows 8 Enterprise, Hyper-V does not function correctly. When I add an iso image to a new virtual server or start one of my existing, I can see the iso file is loaded in the bottom thumbnail.
But when I connect to the virtual server it just says: Connecting to virtual server... and it times out after 5minutes.
All my virtual servers are running locally, they are able to start and are running fine, I just cannot connect to them. Also the ability to turn virtual servers off tends to hang and I have to kill the processes and restart the services for it to stop.

For some reason I can connect fine when I plug in my wireless receiver port into it, But 30 seconds after I plug it in, the bars disappear And a red X appears over it, if you click on it it'll say no networks found.... The only way to fix it is to plug it in and after 30 seconds it happens again...I'm only getting this on my computer, And it's gotten really bad recently, I've tried replacing the reciever, But that fixed it for maybe an hour....

I have a neighbor who has an OPEN network called @HOMED689 . For some reason my Windows 8 machines keep trying to connect to this SSID automatically.
I've never tried to connect to it. Once it's connected however, with limited connectivity, I don't have the ability to right click on it and say "Forget this network" or do anything to it such as when I connect to another wireless it says:
Show Estimated Data Usage
Set as Metered Connect
Forget this Network
View Connection Properties
Nothing.

I bought Windows 8 when it was released, like most people I liked the performance upgrades and other stuff, but that was about it. Months later I installed Windows 7 again, but it just felt old and there were a few things I missed about Windows 8, anyway yesterday I decided to install Windows 8 again (8.1) but I'm having a problem since I did.
Whenever I connected an external hard drive via USB3.0, Wi-Fi would disconnect. I searched this over to see if other people were having the same issue, there were some guys but they were using a USB based Wi-Fi adapter, I'm using the one in the laptop.
DETAILS
Asus U47A
Wi-Fi adapter: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230
External Hard Drive: Seagate Expansion Portable Drive (500GB, USB3.0)
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro, All updates (Problem happens with or without updates, with original (Asus) or Windows supplied drivers)
I was loosing the Wi-Fi connection and I didn't know why, it was very intermitent, it would work for 10 minutes and then not, I then downloaded new drivers, directly from Intel, Asus and then using the Windows Update, it didn't work in neither case.
I was watching youtube and noticed the signal was good, it was working fine, and realised that the Seagate HDD was disconnected, I had just isolated the problem.
I tried to replicate it and indeed it happened, whenever I connected the drive, signal would be lost. At first I thought it might be a hardware-based issue, but it was working fine with Windows 7, so I decided to play with it a little more. I found out that Wi-Fi connection wasn't being lost, but rather loosing power, Windows would only display the closest routers (two, out of five or six that are in range). So I enabled internet sharing in my cell phone, guess what? It worked fine, signal was strong.
I connected the Seagate drive to a USB2.0 port, no problem. Then connected a different HDD (USB2.0) to the USB3.0 port, no problem.
So the thing is that Wi-Fi loses power when the USB3.0 HDD is connected to the USB3.0 port.

I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 660s running Windows 8.1, and I just did a full boot of Ubuntu 13.10 onto a Dell Optiplex 330 that was previously running Windows XP. My goal is to connect to the internet by using the 660s as a bridge to the internet by connecting the two computers with an ethernet cable.
The level of difficulty: My internet requires you to log into it on a separate browser log in page similar to those in airports and other public Wi-Fi access points except that it requires a username and password to log in. My theory is that if I first log in to the internet on my Windows machine then I can connect to it by simply opening a connection from the Ubuntu OS to the Windows OS. Am I off track here or am I on the right track?

I have connected my ipod touch 4g to my new windows 8 laptop via bluetooth. It shows up in both the ipod and in the windows settings as being connected. However, once connected, i am unable to do anything with the connection.
There is no Windows tile showing the ipod, no obvious options in the ipod for how I can do anything with the connection, nothing. What am I supposed to be able to do once I have connected them via bluetooth? Is there a step I'm missing? I've read you can stream podcasts to the computer, for example, but there's supposed to be a windows tile showing the ipod which I'm definitely not getting either in the start menu or when I search.

My wife has a nice new VAIO laptop. We connect it to a Samsung TV with an HDMI cable. Initially there were video artifacts on the TV screen, but after some fiddling they seemed to go away. Today they have returned. I have tried another HDMI cable and it didn't work.
The artifacts are only on the TV screen and not on the laptop display. They cannot be captured with a screenshot (I just tried this and am posting from my computer).
The web search picture (HDMI.jpg) shows small vertical lines in a row after some of the text.
Sort of like this: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
But less than the height of these lines. There is also a set of the lines that follows the mouse cursor around.
The VAIO desktop picture (HDMI2.jpg) shows "sparkles" around the VAIO name and spreading to the left where it takes up the entire side of the screen.
