I faced an error.when i try to start software protection service, an error appear. I was researching for hours but have no result. and i don't know why all options are gray and i cannot change them. I dont want to reinstall win 8.1, because i was install many programs in my windows. and may be... after reinstall and some days use, this error may happen again.

I am facing the issue that after waking my new Lenovo X240 (with 8.1 installed on SSD) from sleep mode it takes up to 50 seconds until the lock screen appears. After setting up Windows to bypass the lock screen altogether waking from sleep mode now only takes a couple of seconds, which is how I would expect it to be.
However, I would actually like to keep the lock screen for security reasons, but haven't figured out what could be the cause for this massive delay?!
I was attempting to enable my system protection in order to allow me to restore individual files to a previous state. Unfortunately when I go to do so the option is not available at all.

I hit view Antivirus apps and this comes up
I click on Norton Internet Security then click turn on, this is what pops up
I click on yes, I trust this publisher to run this app, However nothing happens. It still says that Norton Internet Security is turned off. I went into Norton Internet Security, it says that my system is secure and even ran a full system scan for good measure.
Is there a reason why action center is saying that antivirus protection is turned off?
I have no system protection tab in System Properties box, hence I cannot create a restore point. Looking for the answer to get this tab enabled or reinstalled. I am logging in with Admin rights.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an old Dell netbook that crashed (literally) on the ground, broke the screen. Hard drive is intact and accessible by a USB device, but that pesky password I made up to protect the files under my personal username, even though I know it, doesn't appear anywhere for me to access the document. I haven't found references made to it, but the hard drive has Windows XP operating system on it and I am running 8 on the computer I have now. Don't know if that has anything to do with not being able to get control panel to open on that one. I'm trying to continue writing a book I had started on that computer and foolishly didn't save elsewhere.

Now I find restore points more useful, but I would have to turn the system protection on for an external hard drive. The problem is that I don't understand the sophisticated message Using system protection on a drive that contains system image backups will cause other shadow copies to be deleted faster than normal. Does it mean, that under some circumstances my manually created full system images could be deleted to create a restore point? I would like to keep the system images. Also, I hope it doesn't override existing directories on this harddrive, but I don't want to try it out without being sure.

When trying to update to 8.1 through the store, it tells me I need to uninstall the Dell Data Protection Access program first before continuing with the update. I've done that (I removed all parts: Access, Middleware, and Drivers), it's no longer showing up in my Installed programs list, yet when I try and continue the Windows 8.1 update, I get the same message.

I would like to make a folder share from a tablet with windows 8 with password protected to a laptop of windows 7 and another of vista. I have followed the tutorial of File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8. My PCs have been set in the same workgroup and same user account, network discovery and file and printer sharing turned on. At the first time, it is OK for windows 7. However after some changes of account (delete and create them on both windows 8 and windows 7), it doesn't work anymore with the error from windows 7 "Login failure: user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" whenever password protected turned on in windows 8 and only OK when password turned off.

How To create a start button shortcut to get to start menu in the taskbar. So that we don't need to click the invisible place in the taskbar And there would be a button on which we will click to go to the metro ui start menu.

I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?

I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"
And my Start menu is like this:
And the "sfc/scannow" command shows that there are Corrupted or Missing Files Then I also did these:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth But then also no luck .what to do I updated my PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 4 days before And this happened 3 days before And the PC started to boot from yesterday.
The problem is existing since W7 I could solved it by changing the register

i have a hp pavillion desktop pc which came with windows 7 installed, I later updated to windows 8 and at the same time has a SSD fitted , everything worked perfect for about 7 months then one day it just started to take about 10 mins to boot up ,The screen stayed black then it would start as normal , but if i shut down for 30 minutes or so or reset the computer it would start normal no black screen. i have done a clean reboot , unplugged all external USB devices and the 2nd internal HDD but the problem is still there, i noticed the SSD had 5 partions which i had not made and i am pretty sure they where not there before but i cant be 100% Sometimes the computer will start and some text will come up saying - Scanning and repairing drive (?Volume(14e1d751-2465-4769-9394-09ed6cc6aaf9}): 100% c

Now I'll explain when I turn on my pc at COLD (the day after practically) happens to me .. and not always! However, if you reboot immediately after work PERFECTLY, and for hours and hours! without presenting problems or other, and even under stress. The next day, however, having been off the night it happens it happens .. this blue screen without doing anything specific! Coincidentally, sometimes even if I do nothing on windows just turned on, or a complete on the internet, or other, causally!

I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
After a great deal of fiddling I have succeeded in getting Outlook to reflect my old Vista Mail, meaning I can now see my mail. trouble is that I have to connect to the internet then select Outlook from my Google taskbar and finally select my old Mail account. Is it possible to create a charm so that all I have to do is click on it in Start?

My Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) are all on the desktop and I've tried to pin them to Start, but I don't see the usual "pin to start" button when I right-click. I've also tried to create shortcuts and searched through the apps to pin, but none of them worked. Is there a way I can pin them?

On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
