View 1 RepliesIt seems my windows ran into a problem. I am using Sony VAIO with OS windows 8, ram 8 GB with Nvidia gt780m graphic card 1 GB. It all started when i restored my pc (without recovery disks) as i was getting some problem in installation of Game (assassin Creed 4) and after restoration it worked fine and well. Then after a week or so my windows crashed and I rushed to service centre as I was not having my recovery disks to restore it. back I got my windows again and so I tried to install the same game but it was not installing showing error (screenshot is attached). I looked to other software like NFS MW 2 again I had same problem.
To ensure that installation files were not corrupt i copied the same files on my friends PC and installed it and it worked well and fine on it. Then I got to know it has something to do with my windows system file so I Google it and found the solution to run SFC/scannow command I did the same and there it was the corrupted files of windows(SFC details are attached). I found one particular solution (though it didn't work) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command and tried to repair those files but it alwayz get stuck. How to get on to this issue cuz neither it's allowing me to play games nor letting me run a application properly it alwayz interrupt the application and say that certain .exe need to be closed.
This morning i got a "blue screen of death" and my pac said "your pc has ran into some problems". It then fixed everything and all was fine. I then typed "sfc / scannow" in command prompt and come up with the message "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them windows 8".
Windows 8.1 being used.
My laptop is running ok but I have noticed that certain programs have been taking a lot longer than usual to install/update (e.g. iTunes) but they always do. Then the last few days AVG Antivirus has been wanting to auto-update the software (not just the virus definitions) but each time it would freeze during the ''configuring'' step and subsequently cause every other program running to freeze and stop the opening of any other program - although I could still move the cursor so not a complete freeze if that makes sense.
So today I removed AVG with the removal tool and tried to do a fresh install but now I get a failure message immediately telling me ''MSI Engine: failed to initialize the package''.
How to go about fixing this and ran system file check which said corrupt files were found but it was unable to repair some of them. Here is the log:

How to read one of these or even if it effectively evaluates the status of the installer.
I was attempting to enable my system protection in order to allow me to restore individual files to a previous state. Unfortunately when I go to do so the option is not available at all.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy windows update, windows defender and lots of other programs including Vistart start menu refuse to work. I run the Windowsupdatediagnostic download and it tells me the SFC Output is corrupted or missing. Recently the BITS wasn't working but for some reason found the windows events log was disabled in services. I went to black vipers site and reset all of the services to a standard or safe setting. Yet I cant get anything to work. Ive been running the sfc /scannow in command prompt and it says it found problems but was unable to fix them. It says to check the log files, but when i go to open them they refuse to open and say i don't have administration privileges???
I suddenly got BITS working recently and i swore that would have fixed everything but to no avail. I am afraid to have to to a factory refresh but the problem is I foolishly listened to microsoft suggestion in the store to upgrade this from windows 8 to 8.1 therefore it automatically deletes the windows 8.0 partition on the computer thereby erasing its original operating system with cd key....
I have heard of ones doing a factory reset or refresh and finding since that upgrade they cant get it running without them purchasing it....
I have done a system restore, but the last system restore was a month ago and unfortunately that was when the system was exactly the same as this.
So right now i need to try every possible avenue I can take and want to see if its possible to do a factory refresh without it freaking out because the cd key on the bottom of the computer is for a windows 8.0 and this is the useless upgraded 8.1. This is a Toshiba C55-A 5300 laptop
I ran SFC and it complained that some corrupt files could not be repaired.
Here's the relevant part of the log:

I was running SFC after reaching 100% I get this error Code: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log.
For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log.
Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios. I don't want to do another clean install. Here is my CBS log as well ...
I recently had a power failure while playing DotA 2 and now my fan/harddrive is making a weird noise.
Resource Monitor points that my C: drive (My only one) is running at 100%. Mostly it is being used by MsMpEng, which should be Windows Defender. It shows it scanning stuff (C:Users-----DocumentsGames DownloadsStarMade.exe). When I open Windows Defender it however doesn't show it scanning anything.
After installing Windows 8 upgrade over Win7 on two desktops and one laptop, I ran sfc /scannow (in an administrator command box) as I usually do after new installations, and in all three cases sfc found corrupt system files and repaired them. So downloading the upgrade and installing might find running sfc useful!
SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8
Just purchased a new desktop PC with Windows 8, after some video card issues (now resolved), tried to run System File Checker and received:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them...."
I copied the CBS file to take a look but i'm not really sure which of the multiple errors are causing my issue.
I've got a few:
"[DIRSD OWNER WARNING]"
and
"Failed to create CSI transaction"
"Failed to get CSI Inventory"
My desktop (Dell Optiplex 755, Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit, 4GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6550 2.33GHz) has been playing up over the weekend.
1) Have run restore point 30 June.
2) Sometines beeping (seems like 3-2-3) & not starting. Have removed the 3 RAM sticks, & replaced one at a time. All allowed it to start, so put all back & now booting OK.
3) Ran SFC /scannow, and reported corrupt files found and unable to fix some of them
I am attaching a screen shot of the sfc report, and also attaching the SFC log file.
The latter is many pages if info reports. How to interpret the log, and/or how to repair the system?
As the lpg file CBS.log is nearly 5MB I have split it into 3 files named CBS20140707-a.log.txt, CBS20140707-b.log.txt & CBS20140707-c.log.txt to fit within the 2MB limit for attachment size.
I have no system protection tab in System Properties box, hence I cannot create a restore point. Looking for the answer to get this tab enabled or reinstalled. I am logging in with Admin rights.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI created some windows 8 system images(Using the internal system image tool). Now I find restore points more useful, but I would have to turn the system protection on for an external hard drive. The problem is that I don't understand the sophisticated message Using system protection on a drive that contains system image backups will cause other shadow copies to be deleted faster than normal. Does it mean, that under some circumstances my manually created full system images could be deleted to create a restore point? I would like to keep the system images. Also, I hope it doesn't override existing directories on this harddrive, but I don't want to try it out without being sure.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought my Sony VAIO flip on 12 Feb this year. At the beginning of April it started frequently crashing (a few times a day when using it on my commute and in the evening). It (almost) always crashes with a BSOD, but no error code, and no crash dump generated. About a quarter of the time, upon restarting from the crash, its says "Couldn't start Windows. Internal SSD not found". I'd keep restarting it and it would fail to start with the same error. If I leave it for a while (30 mins+), it restarts fine, until the next crash.
Given the 'SSD not found' errors, I had assumed it was a hardware fault with the drive failing intermittently. This would also explain the lack of crash dumps if the drive had issues and Windows couldn't write to it. However, I've read around and found some SSDs displaying this behaviour after a crash due to unexpected power loss to the drive, so I'm now wondering if this is a symptom not a cause.
Furthermore, windows restore does show windows updated some drivers at the beginning of April when the crashes started.
I did have one crash with and error code and a dump (24th April) but this is the exception. From the event log (occurrences of id 41 "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first") I can see crashes a few times a day every day I've used the computer in April:

I've tried cloning the hard drive to an external one and booting from that to eliminate issues with the internal hard drive but I can't really get that to work.
This morning with a big surprise I found that a lot of files had been deleted from my external HDD
On the desktop I had a look in recycle bin and could notice it was empty.
So sad, I plugged the external HDD on USB port and had a look again in recycle bin, at my surprise many files were there, waiting to be deleted and I could restore them by chance.
I unplugged the extrenal HDD and plugged another one and noticed a file was present again in the recycle bin waiting to be deleted., then I unplugged the HHD and tried to cancel the famous file with no success, the only way was to plugged again the HDD.
So strange situation as the recycle bin icon does not look as it is full, so I don't know if this is a bug from Windows 8 or not but will take care in future as I never seen that problem with Windows 7.
I had a problem with BSOD and tried to run sfc /scannow command but found corrupted files and couldn't fix them, I finally resorted to clean installation, today I received a new BSOD with error 0x0c000021a, and tried again sfc /scannow and message appeared FOUND "CORRUPTED FILES, BUT COULDN'T FIX THEM".*

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got 3 'file not found' entries in my Autoruns report (see below).
Having removed filters from the report, it looks like the files are there, but not where they are expected to be (am I correct with this interpretation?).
So should I be doing something like moving them to where they should be, or deleting the 'file not found' entries, or should I just leave well alone.
During sfc /scannow it gave me a error about a corrupt file, heres the CBS.log:

I have been routinely backuping my OS and important files using Windows 7 backup on a NAS. It just so happened that I needed to re-image my OS drive and I got into the Windows 8 recovery boot sequence.
Under the Advanced tools I selected the System Image Recovery and tried to look for the system image on the network path. Although the prompt said it was connecting to the network , the network share was not found. the command prompt couldn't ping google.com and netsh wlan <SSID> command did not work in hopes of connecting to my local wifi.
Is there a way to connect to the wifi network where my NAS is connected to in order to re-image from the system image found on the NAS? Luckily , there was an older image on a separate local HDD that I could re-image from but I would prefer if I could connect to the NAS during the recovery process.
MDL project. There are a few BIOS dumping tools out there but none specific to this task as yet.
The image could then be used in replacement for the standard W8 flag on systems without UEFI.
When trying to update to 8.1 through the store, it tells me I need to uninstall the Dell Data Protection Access program first before continuing with the update. I've done that (I removed all parts: Access, Middleware, and Drivers), it's no longer showing up in my Installed programs list, yet when I try and continue the Windows 8.1 update, I get the same message.

I am facing the issue that after waking my new Lenovo X240 (with 8.1 installed on SSD) from sleep mode it takes up to 50 seconds until the lock screen appears. After setting up Windows to bypass the lock screen altogether waking from sleep mode now only takes a couple of seconds, which is how I would expect it to be.
However, I would actually like to keep the lock screen for security reasons, but haven't figured out what could be the cause for this massive delay?!
I recently had to do a factory restore on my system. I reinstalled Norton Internet Security using the existing product key I have. Today my action center says virus protection turned off;
I hit view Antivirus apps and this comes up
I click on Norton Internet Security then click turn on, this is what pops up
I click on yes, I trust this publisher to run this app, However nothing happens. It still says that Norton Internet Security is turned off. I went into Norton Internet Security, it says that my system is secure and even ran a full system scan for good measure.
Is there a reason why action center is saying that antivirus protection is turned off?
