Maintenance :: Windows 8 100% On Start Up?
May 8, 2013Is it normal to have the disk at 100% on start up? The only program that are even using any of my disk on start up is system and svchost.

Every time i restart my computer,it logs in quiche but the start up programs take forever to run around 3~5
The list of start programs is there on the screen shot
The rest of them are disabled

Dec 14, 2013This is Windows 8.1. When I wake my computer from sleep, regardless of how long the computer has been sleeping, it takes 10-15 minutes to complete the process. It takes about a minute or so for the lock screen to show up. When it does appear, everything seems to be working but I click on the lock screen to reveal the password entry and a grey screen emerges but no password box or profile photo. Its as if the password box and photo are just missing on the page. So as I wait for the password box to appear, the lock screen will eventually return. I have to keep clicking on the lock screen to see if the password box has appeared.
Sometimes instead of the grey screen, the loading circle of dots animation is displayed but still behind the lock screen as above.
Maintenance :: System Restore Could Not Start

At the same time o0ther serious problems have arisen:
In control panel>programs and features all programs except those named Mi-Mo have disappeared. Some installed since are there, and those in the quick launch menu still work. Most are also missing from the start menu.
Al;so on start up I get a small window saying explorer.exe with a yellow exclamation mark and nothing else.

Jan 10, 2013Running Windows 8 Pro x64 as a Domain User with full Admin privileges, I am unable to use File History. I cannot open/start the File History tool. When I attempt to click on it from the Control Panel, nothing happens. When I try running it from the Metro search tool, it switches to the desktop and nothing loads. I've also tried in the Action Center, under Maintenance, "File History is Off. Turn On." Clicking "Turn On" does nothing.
All other items under the Control Panel that I have tried open and work with no problems.
I also tried in a "clean boot". System file checker reported no errors.
I just noticed in Control Panel there is "Windows 7 File Recovery". If I launch that and try to set up a Windows 7-style backup, it seems to work. I suppose I could just use this older tool instead of the new File History, although I haven't researched the differences.
I have another machine with the same version of Windows 8, and I am able to launch File History with no problems. I click File History from control panel and am taken to another screen that allows me to enable it. No such screen on the problem machine. The only main difference is the working machine is a regular user account; whereas, the non working machine is a domain account

Feb 4, 2014Twice in last 2 weeks, some of my tiles (Games, Bing News, Store, People, Mail, etc.) have just stopped responding.When clicked, I get a blank screen, then the full Start Screen re-appears.Other tiles such as Chrome, Word and Outlook work OK.When this first happened, I did a system restore, and the problem went away, but this time the restore point seems to have gone too.The 'Change PC Settings' does not work either, as I decided to try a complete refresh, but can't access that.

Apr 9, 2014I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

Maintenance :: Start Screen Search And Task Manager Slow Load
Mar 9, 2014While using the computer, periodically when I go to the start screen and search for something, it just hangs for about 20-60 seconds before responding. Now today, every single time I start the computer, it loads fine gets me to the start screen, but if I type anything for the search then it freezes on me for 20-60seconds. If I start it and immediately go to the desktop, I can run SOME programs like IE or Chrome but NOT Ventrilo or games (for 20-60 seconds). Also, TASK manager will not come up nor do any of the windows 8 "charms" work for that time frame.
I am at a loss, this is a fresh OS install about a month ago on a brand new Samsung 840 SSD. All my drivers are up to date, I didn't have this issue a week ago but I did have a system restore point that I restored my computer to and that didn't fix it.
I also tried the Windows Startup Repair, and it tells me it could not repair it and to check my log at "F:/Window...." whereas I have NO F:/ drive and Windows is obviously installed on my C:/ drive (also, it will not allow me to "refresh" my computer. *I have legit Windows 8 Keys that I purchased
I have tried disabling the fast boot in power options.
I have ran a registry cleaner (ccleaner, I hate running cleaners but it was a desperate measure).
I tried creating a new user account.

Windows 8.1 Apps Won't Start From Start Menu
Feb 10, 20143 days before my Windows 8.1 pc wasn't working during log in it showed up with "The System Event Notification Service service failed the sign in."
I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"

Nov 23, 2012I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?

Apr 19, 2013Having a problem with the Regular Maintenance waking the computer (Windows 8 on a Lenovo Q-190) to do its scheduled task as it's supposed to do. Here are the symptoms:
1. If I change the time for Scheduled Maintenance in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL be reflected properly in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Scheduler.
2. However, if I check the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time" in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL NOT reflect in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Schedular. Specially, I check the box to wake up my computer in the Action Center Maintenance Settings, but the corresponding checkmark is NOT reflected ("Wake the computer to run this task"), in the properties of the actual task in Task Scheduler.
3. I then put the checkmark directly in the Regular Maintenance Task itself ("Wake the computer to run this task"). However, at some point in the future, (not right away; I close and then reopen the task to make sure that it 'sticks'), the checkmark "disappears. Then, the task does not run at night while the computer is asleep, but runs in the morning when I wake the computer for regular use. At that point, the checkmark in the task is gone.

Oct 15, 2013I deleted maintenance tasks in task scheduler (Microsoft>windows>task scheduler) because I didn't want to have automatic maintenance fire up when I'm working, but sadly... some shit got messed up. My computer starts using hdd at 100% if left idle, and then freezes and all kinds of weird crap that I'm almost positive have to do with me deleting maintenance.

Sep 15, 2014I had the idle & regular maintenance tasks disabled but they always re-enabled themselves. In a fit of madness I ended up deleting them but now when I open a folder with videos or images the thumbnails always display in a slow staggered way every time from left to right, If I then exit the folder & go back in they do the same again. It's almost like they are not being cached at all & are having to be redrawn every time.
The only change I have made to my system is remove Comodo firewall & install Private Firewall & delete the idle & regular maintenance tasks.

Jun 21, 2014I have Automatic Scheduled Maintenance set to run at 3:00AM. I get to this setting by going to Control Panel > Action Center > Maintenance > Change maintenance settings. I also have the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer" checked.
However, I note that if I put my computer to sleep for a few days, when I wake it back up, Automatic Scheduled Maintenance has NOT run. I can tell this because my antivirus definitions are out-of-date and haven't been updated since I put the computer to sleep.
how to figure why it's not waking up for Scheduled Maintenance? Is it possibly a BIOS setting? Do I have to manually add it to Task Scheduler? I'm running Windows 8.1 Update 1, ASRock Z87E-ITX mobo, Intel i7-4770S CPU, Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD, 16GB RAM.

I use Geekzone's EPG collector to fill in the guide on Media Centre and I though it would be nice for it to run as part of Automatic Maintenance rather than wake the computer up again later to do it's thing.
Here's how:
Create an XML files in notepad and paste this in...

I got this from exporting a task that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance and edited it to suit.
the thing is, I still don't know how it works! I haven't been able to create a schedules task from scratch that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance.
Other than plagiarising existing tasks to get what I want, how it's really done?
I have what I want, and it works great being able to run all the things I want all at the same time at 3AM each day, as part of Windows' ritual. Even better, if I disable it from waking the computer, everything runs when I'm logged in and Idle. It's fantastic.

Aug 27, 2014i have a hp pavillion desktop pc which came with windows 7 installed, I later updated to windows 8 and at the same time has a SSD fitted , everything worked perfect for about 7 months then one day it just started to take about 10 mins to boot up ,The screen stayed black then it would start as normal , but if i shut down for 30 minutes or so or reset the computer it would start normal no black screen. i have done a clean reboot , unplugged all external USB devices and the 2nd internal HDD but the problem is still there, i noticed the SSD had 5 partions which i had not made and i am pretty sure they where not there before but i cant be 100% Sometimes the computer will start and some text will come up saying - Scanning and repairing drive (?Volume(14e1d751-2465-4769-9394-09ed6cc6aaf9}): 100% c

Apr 29, 2013It all worked fine until tonight, some of installed app just wont start, those default apps from Microsoft are still working fine though; the problem is when you open the app, it quits to the sidebar while its still running on the background it just doesn't respond to anything until you close it, whats stranger is those apps running fine on my second monitor, when i drag them to my primary screen, they crash.
The only major thing I've done lately to my system was update my catalyst driver to the latest one, not sure if that is related; I've tried uninstall app and reinstall again, and I'm running default Windows Defender, nothing's been changed.
And I don't want to do a refresh just for that...
Windows Start Button Is Gone
Dec 21, 2013Today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version). I was pretty much forced to do the update. Now, my start button is completely gone and replaced with something that takes me to the Windows 8 screen, which I absolutely hate, because I can't control anything on it. I have installed a utility that let's me use the desktop, and it basically looks like Windows 7, which worked perfectly fine. It seems like all my apps are gone and this new button is linked only to the Windows 8 screen. How can I get my Windows 7 profile back?

I guess MS is trying to change the new Start Menu. Even in the APPS menu you get the Start Menu.
This does not happen on every pc overhere, but certainly on 2 of the 4.

Sep 15, 2014Win 8.1 x64 Pro. Paper fell down behind my desk and while getting it my hand touched a power cord, the result being when I came back up the screen was frozen. I shut down by the computer button, waited, restarted and the Windows blue four rectangle image comes up and the dotted circle continues to rotate, but can't get past it. No shut down error message, as I would have expected. Repeated the process twice just to be sure. What is the best way to approach this? I do have a Win 8 original disk if needed and there are recent sys restores and a system disk image on another internal HDD.
Update: On the fourth try, after a bit a message has come up, "Scanning and repairing drive (K)." It's gotten to 7% complete but seems stuck there. Since Windows drive labeling and user labeling are often different, not sure what drive it's working on.
